I've been to Aldi (won't need to go back til Friday now, possibly longer).

Everyone had to queue to get in, at least 6ft apart. Security guard was letting one person in as one came out (only single shoppers allowed, no children/couples etc). I had to wait quite a long time as you'd expect, which was of course fine and actually reassuring. The mood in the queue was quite sombre and low key but everyone was friendly and understanding of the measures. A couple of arses tried to skip the queue and took offence when told to get to the back of it though. Guard was letting older/disabled people to the front of the queue.

Inside the shelves were well stocked - no dried pasta or toilet roll but everything else. Scored my first tinned tomatoes in weeks. Fruit and veg fully stocked. And wine! Thank goodness Wine

There were only about 30 customers in what's quite a large store so it was actually all very relaxed. Everyone observing social distancing and no panic buying or anything silly. All in all v impressive.

What are the supermarkets like where you are?

My SAinsbury was very quiet, most people keeping well apart. (Apart from the idiots standing in front of the small supply of bacon discussing at length which packet to buy)

Supplies were OK except for:
loo rolls, none on shelves, but a pallet of 4-packs.
pasta - none
tinned stuff -scanty
meat - plenty of expensive steak, not much basic mince, more sausages than usual.

Constant announcements reminding you to keep distance, and only take 3 maximum, only 1 of popular items.

I did the magic checkout, not sure if it would have stopped me zapping more than 2 items

No queues at the regular tills, alternate ones open, so no need for customers to get too close.

The self service tills, and the zapper ones, were again, alternate ones only to maintain space, and I think the self service were card only. (The zapper ones are always card only)

The foreign currency was obviously closed, I think the lottery was closed, not sure about fags. The deli counters were closed, but they had made up bags of ham etc. to buy.

I was impressed, as it's normally bedlam in there. They usually work on the principle of closing tills, as soon as there is less than a 2 deep queue, just in case the checkout operator might be able to relax for a moment.

I've just come back from town. Got to waitrose at 8:50 and queued, they are only letting a certain number in at a time and are wiping down the trolleys and checkouts after every use.

Very surreal but calm.

Still a lot of empty shelves but has improved from last week, I think they'll be back to normal soon.
