Wanting NHS volunteers to help with delivering meds etc.

Lots of people signed up through the returnees scheme

They are putting too much hope on people retaining immunity to covid19.
Understandably I suppose, but it does worry me.

SouthWestmom · 24/03/2020 17:06

Same here. I'm not immune to the common cold even though I've had loads.

SouthWestmom · 24/03/2020 17:06

That was an e-press conference apparently

Not sure why it is believed things are being hidden.

I agree, there are numerous sites tracking this locally, nationally and internationally.

Look at Italy (who have better healthcare than we do, including more intensive care units per capita, and more ECMO units (this is the only thing to keep one alive when lungs totally collapse)) and that thing is heading our way. All this data is being tracked.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 24/03/2020 17:07

I worry that this new hospital won't have 4000 ventilators so if you end up being sent there you're basically being sent to die.

SimplySteveRedux · 24/03/2020 17:07

Oh fuck, if Nadine Dorries is immune, does she become Prime Minister when the rest of them succumb?

🤣🤣🤣

Eggcited · 24/03/2020 17:08

Is this the only briefing tonight?? Or are we expecting one from Boris?

Ginnymweasley · 24/03/2020 17:09

Immunity to the common cold is different to immunity to other viruses. There a loads of strains of the cold and immunity is short lived that is why a vaccine to the cold is impossible.
Whether immunity lasts with covid 19 is to be seen but it's not in the realms of ridiculous looking at other coronavirus strains.

SimplySteveRedux · 24/03/2020 17:11

I worry that this new hospital won't have 4000 ventilators so if you end up being sent there you're basically being sent to die.

We don't have enough staff to operate our usual NHS hospitals and other clinics, so where are they planning to get the staff? (our HCP-to-patient ratio is one of the worst in EU/US), I'd be very surprised if they were suitably qualified.

Ginnymweasley · 24/03/2020 17:11

Not everyone who needs hospital treatment will need a ventilator though. I imagine less serious carse will be sent to the new hospital or it will be almost like a giant triage service.

SouthWestmom · 24/03/2020 17:12

That's reassuring Ginny I was trying to think of something you can have more than once.

I don't think everyone in hospital needs ventilation do they Cherie?

4000 beds - is that about the death rate in Italy over several weeks ?

Devlesko · 24/03/2020 17:14

Yesterday at 3.45 he announced 500 and something people registered to return. Then during the night it went to thousands.
God, they think we're stupid.
Wtf would volunteer unless they were on a suicide mission.

PicsInRed · 24/03/2020 17:16

When he used the term "NHS clinicians" to describe the staff who would oversee this Nightingale Hospital, I don't think many will be qualified doctors or even qualified registered nurses.

Many in Italy and China chose, fought, to remain in their homes. I would stay home before going to one of those facilities.

Whalette · 24/03/2020 17:16

@Devlesko That's probably due to the LInkedIn campaign that went out yesterday afternoon.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 24/03/2020 17:17

There are also military Dr's, nurses and other medics which I'm sure will be relocated not just NHS.

Devlesko · 24/03/2020 17:18

It must have been a good campaign to have increased by all those thousands in less than 3 hours. I don't buy it tbh.
I don't know any retired HCP returning and I know quite a few. I've seen none on my fb or anywhere else.

Devlesko · 24/03/2020 17:20

Yes, maybe Armed services and ex soldiers may be helping too.
It would be good to get all our brave soldiers off the streets, and make them feel like we treasure them, rather than them sleeping in doorways.

Whalette · 24/03/2020 17:20

@Devlesko It's been more than 24 hours - lots people I know are wanting to go back, lots of media articles on it as well.

Yes Military doctors are being diverted to NHS - this isn't new, they often do NHS rotations.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 24/03/2020 17:20

This has been compared to the flu for weeks. Who has immunity to the flu?!

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 24/03/2020 17:20

Sadly I think there is some truth on that Devlesko. And I say that as someone who de-registered in Dec 2016.

Older people are at increased risk of needing intervention & have higher mortality. Health care workers also appear to have a higher viral load. Older health care workers are therefore especially vulnerable.

It puts me in mind of the First World War, where wave after wave of troops were sacrificed. I think the saying was lions led by donkeys.

Mockerswithnoknockers · 24/03/2020 17:22

I see the Sun (It would be the Sun) are asking about getting together for sex, or do we have to do it on the phone?

(Your handy pull-out guide in tomorrow's paper.)

Boudicabooandbulldogs · 24/03/2020 17:26

I think a lot of military staff will be manning the new hospital. My sister is a combat med tech, frontline medic. She is currently in training with hundreds of others to operate ventilators. There are also hundreds of armed forces nurses that can be used too.
Lots are on 8 days stand by.
I highly doubt people will be sent to the new hospital to just die. We have a lot of medics that are civilians.

Bluntness100 · 24/03/2020 17:27

I really doubt matt Hancock just lied about how many people signed up to come back, why would he do that for goodness sake. If they did not have enough they would double up on the appeal. Not pretend thousands have signed up.

That’s taking a conspiracy theory into the ridiculous.

There are a lot of good people out there who will step up.

peridito · 24/03/2020 17:28

I remember Harries saying in the briefing on the 5 March that nos of tests per day would be ramped up to 10,000 by the 13 March .

We're only at 6,500 to date .So personally I'm a little sceptical about anything said .

peridito · 24/03/2020 17:30

that's good to know Bulldogs thanks for mentioning
