What are people's views of online ordering NON essentials?

ImfinallyaMummy · 24/03/2020 12:31

DS could do with some new trousers (legs seem to be growing fast), I could do with some new leggings as it's all I'm wearing at the mo and a new pair of slippers.

Am I being selfish ordering online? Is it frowned on at the mo? Online clothing stores seem to be still open. What about returning if they don't fit etc?

I had planned to buy kids new clothes and had actually filled my basket online.
It’s not essential. It can wait a couple of weeks.

Wingedharpy · 24/03/2020 14:08

Kids are safer than adults in this pandemic (underlying medical problems excluded).

Littlebearstrousers · 24/03/2020 14:08

Cant you pick some up at the supermarket? As far as I know, the big 4 do clothes. Unless they have stopped stocking them?

PristineCondition · 24/03/2020 14:08

If you all stopped buying our places would close and we could be as safe as you.
That would help

Littlebearstrousers · 24/03/2020 14:10

I mean alongside your shop that you would be doing anyway not a specific trip

Exactly! Online warehouses selling non essential items should close, staff who are picking, packing your items, dealing with couriers each day and mixing with lots of other staff deserve to be safe too. Why risk people’s lives for a pair of jeans or other non essential item?

Nameofchanges · 24/03/2020 14:30

I’ve been wondering this. I want to order chocolate, and seeds to grow food online. I can’t get a supermarket delivery until mid April.

Am I am just being really selfish, because someone will have to pack those boxes.

No one is forcing you to work. Maybe you should quit so someone who needs a job could replace you. Last thing we need is a broken down economy, which will also hurt a lot of people.

eddiemairswife · 24/03/2020 15:03

You may not be able to return them. I couldn't return the carrier bags to the Waitrose deliverer.

Defaultuser · 24/03/2020 15:15

My husband got a row from our postie for getting a package delivered (it was mine and something I had requested a few weeks ago).

pobparker · 24/03/2020 15:16

Most online retailers are extending their returns period
they realise people can not send items back
The government said n their guidelines that online retail business should be encouraged - it is helping keep the economy going a little bit
Items like books , puzzles etc can help with keeping people occupied at home

Yes and my kids can eat air and my landlord and bills will just let us be.

I hadn't thought of that. Thanks

MoltonSilver · 24/03/2020 15:18

I'm ordering online from smaller business to help keep them afloat.

PristineCondition · 24/03/2020 15:20

helping keep the economy going a little bit
Items like books , puzzles etc can help with keeping people who get to stay safe occupied at home while others are forced take the risk

Fixed it for you

chocolatviennois · 24/03/2020 15:25

Of course you can order from any online site that is delivering and help save people’s jobs.

HelloToMyKitty · 24/03/2020 15:29

So that’s why we need to keep the economy going, no? People need to spend money so you can pay your landlord so your landlord can pay the bank, etc etc.

I think a lot of nonessential workers are going to get worried if this goes on too much longer. Layoffs can’t be far behind.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 24/03/2020 15:34

I’ve had to buy ds a full new bedroom, (carpet, bed, wardrobe, pillows, duvet, etc) as we had a burst pipe and his bedroom was ruined) I’ve no idea when he will get them, but I’ve still ordered (evening of lock down)

He’s currently sleeping on the sofa, while his dad tries and rebuilds his room.

wondering7777 · 24/03/2020 15:42

I'm hoping online deliveries continue for the meantime, as I'm currently trying to buy everything I need for my newborn who is due quite soon. Online shopping has been an absolute lifeline, although I now wish I'd got started sooner. But who could have predicted this?

Mysocalledlifexx · 24/03/2020 15:47

Ive been doing it as this is the only way shops will be able to open again when this is over so i will keep buying & help my fave stores stay,i dont mind if it takes longer to get to me .

Mysocalledlifexx · 24/03/2020 15:50

I wouldnt buy when we are on lockdown id wait a few weeks

Davincitoad · 24/03/2020 15:51

Jesus Christ everyone needs to get a grip. Stay at home. Yes I know delivery men etc but did you see that in China? No. They did two months. Here will be until Xmas unless people sod off.

mamatobabybears · 24/03/2020 15:57

I’ve ordered a few non-essentials. Ordered a couple of jigsaws and did a baker Ross order for craft things, just a few extra things to help keep children entertained now we’re stuck at home. I don’t see the issue.

foamrolling · 24/03/2020 16:07

It's interesting isn't it how someone on another thread has just been vilified for wanting to walk her dog twice a day in a completely private and secluded field but if it's suggested we make sacrifices such as not ordering shit online the people who work fulfilling these orders 'will probably be fine'. We're a selfish bunch us humans.

AwdBovril · 24/03/2020 16:07

At what point does clothing become essential though? 3 weeks without shopping, wouldn't be an issue for most people. What if it's extended to 2 months? Or 3? I don't think my DD has any shoes that will still fit her in 3 months, I was going to buy some in a few weeks.

I need to order a washing line. Because if I don't, we have to keep drying everything inside, the house gets damp & probably mouldy, & my asthma becomes an issue. And I have to see a doctor because I can't breathe, but I can't because Coronavirus, & my asthma just gets worse & worse.

DoubleAction · 24/03/2020 16:10

I think everyone should follow the rules as laid out by the Prime Minister. It's not helpful if MNetters people make moral judgements and invent their own rules.

Yes online shopping is still OK until we're told therewise.
