So I got to my hospital this morning an hour early and thought I'd have a coffee before the onslaught.
I was rung right then to say a colleague is off sick today can you go to the other hospital in the next town, we work between the two in emergencies.
Normally this would take me three quarters of an hour in normal rush hour traffic.
Today it took me two hours of agonisingly slow traffic.
The roads - even after last nights message from Boris were absolutely heaving, whole families in cars, elderly in cars, people with multiple bikes on their roof racks in cars, it was never ending.
What the ACTUAL FUCK is wrong with people, we have been told to stay in - so stay in. Stay the fuck at home.
It seems like the lemmings, totally confused by the loss of their normal routines have actually gone mad.
There were still people out and about in every town and village I drove through.
For the last week people whose routine appointments with physio, podiatry and orthopaedic clinics to make way for emergencies have been coming in screaming abuse at us and having to be removed by security.
Apparently we are using the virus as "an excuse".
Elderly people are coming in in droves angry that routine clinics have been cancelled and kicking up a fuss.
Quite honestly I won't even talk to them, I don't want to contract it by angry spittle flying my way because that's what it's come to now.
People are behaving like animals.
What the hell is wrong with everyone. What part of stay at home don't people understand.
We are only seeing emergencies now, people who would otherwise die if they didn't come in. I know it's crap and I know it's awful having to be in the house all the time but it's not the fault of the hospital staff.
I don't particularly want to be here at risk of getting sick everyday but I do what I'm paid to do.
Please will you all just get the hell off the roads and stay at home.
I hope Boris brings the army in next because that's what we need.

Sadly I think there are an awful lot of morons out there who simply will not understand the gravity of the situation we are in until they, or someone they love, are directly affectedSad

itsgettingweird · 24/03/2020 11:22

Thank you as the first thing to say. Thank you for doing what you do day and day out before, now and after this national health crisis.

Secondly you are right.

People are complete fucking cunts.

Personally I'd say we'd be better producing 100,000s of Iq tests rather than a vaccine because it seems most people can't actually comprehend a simple instruction of stay at home.

ClientQueen · 24/03/2020 11:26

People are bonkers
Watch youtube
Start a box set
Do some gardening
Clean the house
Have a nap
Read a book
Just sit the fuck down and don't go out unless you NEED food or medication
I've not left the house since last Tuesday, it's fine 🤷🏽‍♀️
Use your food in order. Fresh stuff first, soft fruit, salad. Move onto the below ground veg and batch cook with it if you can. Freeze what you can. Use your cupboard stuff. Then get more of what you NEED. Not necessarily what you want but what you need to be fed

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/03/2020 11:28

Fellow NHS here (Podiatrist) I'm on leave this week (not SI)

I haven't checked so far what measures will be in place but I would imagine the High Risk (Ulcer) clinics will be ongoing as far as humanely possible . And of course , the opportunity to send patients to A&E if needed is limited ( if the patient even agrees to attend) if they need IV antibiotics .
It will be the Routine patients (possibly enquiring or having been cancelled ) who will either turn up or pop in to ask "because I was here for xyz anyway"

I will need to answer their queries and keep my 2 metres .
And have to explain that "No, I do not know when we will be in a situation to offer our clinics"

Our dentist appointments have been cancelled .
Our GP is using phone consultations .

I can predict some awful situations ahead .

Straycatstrut · 24/03/2020 11:28

What @SilverOtter said.

"I'M not doing that, BJ can eff right off!".... Oh my god my DH has got it, I didn't realise it was THIS bad!

Being ordered to do something makes people purposely rebel. Thousands of selfish, entitled people in the world.

willloman · 24/03/2020 11:31

Maybe it's arse*^% returning back from the countryside? Might be just a flurry to get to the right place and then everyone will settle down? Let's hope, hey.

Notthemessiah · 24/03/2020 11:33

It has been quite a bit quieter on the roads around here, but not totally dead.

Lots of people still have to get to work (and despite the confusion that's not just key workers) - not everyone can work at home.

Quite a few people can't stay at home, much as I'm sure they would like to.

Bluebelle32 · 24/03/2020 11:36

We haven’t been out in a week but need to today. Prescription meds and also need prescription food from the vet who is shutting down. So hopefully some of the traffic is like that and there will be significantly less tomorrow.

TheOwlandThe · 24/03/2020 11:36

It's actually really quiet in our hospital (outpatients and non-corona A&E anyway) and most people have been really understanding about cancelled appointments.

The only people I find who are still trying to come to their routine appointments are the very elderly. I'm talking people in their 80/90s with multiple co-morbidities for really really routine appointments, please don't come!

We have had one or two knobs turn up claiming they didn't know it was cancelled and demanding to be seen. Yes you did I spoke to you yesterday.

However there are still lots of people out and about, I'm currently SI in my house and over the weekend was like a constant stream of people walking past. I really feel like people just don't understand. But I don't know how to get them to understand.

itsgettingweird · 24/03/2020 11:37

Now that people can't just turn up at their GP and a and e for anything I wonder if in future they'll start exercising some common sense about whether they need to attend or not.

CherryTreeTop · 24/03/2020 11:40

in London it is super quiet

but as you say, I imagine a lot of people who could leave, left and are now causing problems in other areas :(

Herpesfreesince03 · 24/03/2020 11:40

This is on bojo. People are going to do what they feel like. He should have announced a proper lockdown. Last nights instructions were completely pointless

Firsttimelottie · 24/03/2020 11:45

It's ridiculous. We need vehicles patrolling the street with megaphones ordering them all to go home (unless food shopping etc.) immediately. Bloody idiots.

Kraejka · 24/03/2020 11:46

You just have to look at some of the other threads on here last night to see why there is so much traffic about.
People think the rules don't apply to them or that what they want to do is essential.
And far too many posters on Mumsnet backing them up - yeah, it's perfectly fine for you to drive somewhere so you can go for a walk. Yeah, you can just go for a random drive in your car because your child won't sleep otherwise because there's no risk involved in driving.

Absolutely ridiculous. Stay the fuck home.

Nonibaloni · 24/03/2020 11:56

I asked my team leader to check with their boss that I was definitely needed back in the office. I am technically an essential worker but not on anything that hasn’t been suspended at the moment. I wanted to check if I am being moved onto some essential (great, better than twiddling my thumbs) or was I just supposed to be in. I was treated to a long lecture about being paid to work and why was I entitled to special treatment.

I don’t know how the guidance could have been clearer. I don’t know how I could have been clearer. I Am sorry that the actual front line are dealing with people not helping because their bosses can’t follow instructions or make decision. Honestly if I didn’t need the money, I would quit. If I can find another job, i will quit.

teraculum29 · 24/03/2020 11:57

in this scary times, people should be told "go and exercise for long hours in crowded areas" so maybe they would stay at home then.

As it's seems people are doing the opposite now as we are told to stay at home.

SociallyDistanced · 24/03/2020 12:02

What is wrong with people??

I'm.so embarrassed and ashamed to be part of the British public at the moment.

All I've seen on here is people splitting hairs and interpreting what Boris has said to their advantage. So many do umderstand what Non Essential means.
So.many think they know better than just stay home.

I absolutely despair.

I'm.so.sorry to all of you on the front line. Risking everything for twats like this.
Thank you so much for being there for us.

I don't know what to say to make up for all the twats.Sad

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 24/03/2020 12:09

Nestofvipers

We are fucked aren’t we? What part of STAY IN do people not understand?
Let's get things right. We have NOT been told to stay in. We have been told to stay at home except in certain circumstances.

You will always have bloody idiots though who think it doesn't apply to them.

And STILL there are people here starting threads wondering whether it's ok for them to visit their parents/drive to the countryside to allow their kids or dogs to play/piss about in the park. And then they get shirty when people say stay the fuck at home. Entitled nobs.
Parks ARE staying open for people to visit though. You just need to use the 2 metres distance from others rule. (Not that I would go to one).

8by8 · 24/03/2020 12:13

It’s quiet here in London - but yes several of my wealthier friends have already gone to the country, possibly taking the virus with them, and certainly increasing strain on local supplies of food, toilet paper etc. They’re wankers. I’ve told them so. Sorry 😐

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 24/03/2020 12:20

Herpesfreesince03

This is on bojo. People are going to do what they feel like. He should have announced a proper lockdown. Last nights instructions were completely pointless
They weren't pointless. He has closed down most shops so that has resulted in shop workers now being at home.

Don't generalise. Lots of people are doing the right thing and staying at home. It isn't the PM's fault that people are behaving irresponsibly or stupidly. We will get worse conditions if people don't start toeing the line.

I think that some people do seem to have such a sense of entitlement these days. We have had things so good that people have no bloody idea what is essential and what are luxuries these days.

Winter2020 · 24/03/2020 12:21

The instructions are too loose. If adults go food shopping once or twice a week and everyone goes outside for an hour (their exercise) that is a lot of people on the streets and in the shops.

Lots of people still going to work and Boris said you can go to work. They need to say they will fine non essential businesses that ask staff to go in and allow people to litigate if they or a loved one catches the virus at work when asked to go in in a non essential role - then watch the businesses close /work from home within the hour.

Sammy867 · 24/03/2020 12:25

I’m wondering if there’s a north/ south divide going on as well? I live in a major northern city and the A roads are empty, the shops are empty, public transport has been cancelled other than Sunday service times, supermarkets are full of food; I don’t recognise half the stories on here as up here everything has shut down. I’m a key worker and travel between 3 cities here and each one has been empty. Where is everyone based that are having problems?

Dragongirl10 · 24/03/2020 12:28

So so sorry op you all deserve better, people are so bloody selfish.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 24/03/2020 12:28

You are so right

Fifthtimelucky · 24/03/2020 12:29

I agree. Not everyone is acting like an idiot.

I went out to the supermarket earlier to buy groceries for my family and for an elderly neighbour. It's my first supermarket shop for a week.

I have never seen the roads so empty except on Christmas Day. The car park at Tesco was about 1/8 full.

I'm in Surrey.
