Should we contact the police about people who won't stay home?

I've seen a lot of things on Mumsnet about people who basically don't give a fuck and still plan to leave their house for the most non-essential reasons imaginable.

Should we alert the police if we become aware of anyone I'm our local areas who do this? Or would that be a waste of police time?

Absolutely we should be alerting local police and local politicians.

grandmasterstitch · 24/03/2020 06:44

I think this is going to be a huge issue. There just aren't enough police to enforce this. My village doesn't have a single officer. They only come up this way if something happens. I imagine if we report things to the police they'll just make a note and that will be it. Boris hasn't gone far enough

Pinkyyy · 24/03/2020 06:47

I'm glad people are not against it, I will be contacting them if I know of anything. I would tell them anyway @grandmasterstitch if they get multiple reports about an individual/group then I'm sure they will respond.

I'm sure the police are going to rush round because some nosy neighbour saw someone walk their dog twice, they will be out doing crowd dispersal in the parks and towns.

Casino218 · 24/03/2020 06:48

I've seen loads of army personnel in city and I know people have in other cities too. Are they setting up field hospitals as in Italy or are they here to enforce lockdown?

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 24/03/2020 06:50

The army are going to be involved with the hubs for distribution to the very vulnerable people who can't go out for 12 weeks

MagentaRocks · 24/03/2020 06:51

Yes, contact the police. We have had a lot of calls about pubs still being open and letting people in through the back door. I would say though that best to stick to reporting gatherings of more than 2, and obvious flouting of the rules such as non essential,shops/pubs/cafes open. Seeing your neighbour going out for a walk twice in one day isn’t really something that would be easy to police.

MagentaRocks · 24/03/2020 06:53

Also, be mindful that you may have a long wait when ringing- yes I know there is usually a long wait anyway but we are also going to lose staff and we will need to prioritise the emergency calls first so waits on 101 are probably going to be even longer.

I'm obviously not talking about someone walking their dog twice. Nor am I expecting them to rush out. But I think they should be made aware and cases where there are multiple reports will probably need looking at.

If it is a group of people contact the police.

If the group are playing football or whatever in a local park contact the owner of that park as well, as if they are a council they can close it. If the owner does nothing after multiple reports of different groups doing the similar things email your MP.

If it's an individual ignore them unless they are looking shifty as they can argue they are doing their "daily" exercise.

BlueGheko · 24/03/2020 06:56

How will you know if someone is out for genuine reasons or not? I'm going to work today, work in an essential role, then I have to pick up shopping and meds for my parents, would you report me? This is starting to look a lot like a dystopian nightmare, neighbours calling the police on each other.

NuclearWinter · 24/03/2020 06:57

Isn't it just.

MarieG10 · 24/03/2020 06:58

Don't bother. They are already inundated.

CarlottaValdez · 24/03/2020 06:59

What will looking shifty entail?

DeadBod · 24/03/2020 06:59

The police don't have enough resources to deploy to thier existing incidents of burglaries etc so reporting stuff like this will overwhelm them.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 24/03/2020 07:00

Shifty probably means poor on MN

IamNotDarling · 24/03/2020 07:01

No, do not contact the police unless it’s an emergency.

SoloD · 24/03/2020 07:01

Definitely advise the police of pubs doing lock ins.

Mawbags · 24/03/2020 07:01

How are you going to know if you're at home yourself?

Pinkyyy · 24/03/2020 07:02

So some of you wouldn't report it if you saw a group of People playing football etc on the park?

OP posts:
WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 24/03/2020 07:04

OP will be setting up her video camera in her front window or front garden to catch anyone walking past more than once a day

DesdemonaRosa · 24/03/2020 07:06

I would only report the most serious and flagrant rule breaking tbh.

Two walks a day? Nope.

Pubs opening with large gatherings? Yes.

Underhisi · 24/03/2020 07:08

Community PC if there is a group of teenagers on the field over the road but I won't be reporting my neighbour for walking his dog twice a day.

FoxEars · 24/03/2020 07:08

This is why the army are being brought in

Police is not enough

ilovecakeandwine · 24/03/2020 07:12

This is getting silly , if you hear about a pub staying open yes people who are forced to stay at work yes but not someone you see leave the house 3 times .
I will go out today for a run also I'll need to go to the supermarket.
I'm wondering if I need to go to work too to collect my things. I don't need some nosey neighbour passing comment about what I'm doing we have enough on.
