Does allotment count as exercise?

I could cycle there, or drive, and then do a proper work out. Huge allotments, a good 4 m from anyone.

I would say so

MrsJoshNavidi · 23/03/2020 21:48

I'd say so, yes

Wingedharpy · 23/03/2020 21:49

His speech says :
1 form of exercise a day eg. run, walk or cycle, alone or with members of your household.
So, I doubt it.
The cycle there and back would be the exercise.

pocketem · 23/03/2020 21:49

Obviously not

It's a hobby, not exercise

onetoomany · 23/03/2020 21:53

You are a key worker - essential food production Smile

Littlebelina · 23/03/2020 21:57

I expect the national allotment society will issue guidance soon. I know they said to take photos of your livestock (if your allotments allow them) as proof incase you were stopped on the way to feed them in case of lockdown.

artisanparsnips · 23/03/2020 21:57

Yes, I can't find the post now but someone asked DEFRA and yes, as long as you stay along way away from your fellow allotmenteers and don't go by public transport

daisypond · 23/03/2020 21:59

Yes. It’s food production.

Beesisabuzzin · 23/03/2020 21:59

I wouldn't have thought so.

greathat · 23/03/2020 22:06

I'd say yes as you won't be close to people and I assume you're growing food which is going to be needed when the lockdowns in Spain etc stop our food production

Oysterbabe · 23/03/2020 22:09

I'm popping down frequently to harvest broccoli atm so I would imagine that's OK. Weeding and digging could be my exercise for that day. Mine is a 1 minute walk from my house so I reckon the chances of being stopped are low. I don't think I've come within 2 metres of another plot holder since I took it on.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/03/2020 22:10

My dad's allotment is his exercise (under normality)

Probably safer in current situation than walking around the attached park- which is always full of dog walkers, young kids on bike/scooters, people getting fresh air etc. In contrast, on his allotment he can go days without seeing people.

There's chickens, pigeons etc kept on the allotments as well.

BMW6 · 23/03/2020 22:16

My allotment is less than a minutes walk away. I'd think it would be classed as exercise, and on the recent days anyone on their plots have been very careful to stay well away from each other.

Obviously happy to comply if otherwise.

Twinkeltoe · 24/03/2020 06:48

Absolutely, furthermore ask your council. Councils don’t want plots turning into weeds. You will be self isolated, exercise and providing your family essential provisions. Carry in, be sendible and take hand sanitizer for gates.

Igneococcus · 24/03/2020 06:55

I had the same question. We need to drive to ours or could cycle but maybe not with everything that needs planting and sowing,
We actually get a significant amount of our food (family of four) from the allotment. I have a feeling will need it in few months.

Oysterbabe · 24/03/2020 07:07

I can't see the logic in letting food I've grown rot on the plant while I drag myself out to a germy supermarket to buy some wrapped in plastic instead.

vegas888 · 24/03/2020 07:11

All travel on roads, trains and buses was also banned unless it’s essential to get to work.

So no is the answer......

Eireni · 24/03/2020 07:12

I think so. Ours is 4 mins walk from the flat and you’re naturally much more than >2m away from other people when you’re there. We wore gloves to open/unlock the gate yesterday just in case. We get a lot of food from the plot as well.

My wondering is, I was just about to order seeds online, what with everything I hadn’t quite got round to it as early as I would usually.

Ihavenoidewhatsgoingon · 24/03/2020 07:18

I would think so also good for mental health and you will be producing food

Splodgetastic · 24/03/2020 07:24

Not the same question, but I assume we are still allowed out into the garden regardless of whether food is grown there or whether we’re doing exercise. There’s no detailed guidance on this.

eurochick · 24/03/2020 07:24

Given the headlines this morning about likely shortages of fruit and veg in future due to how much we import from Spain and Italy, the government would be pretty damn idiotic to stop people growing their own wherever possible.

StarShapedWindow · 24/03/2020 07:25

I’m going to take the DC to our allotment as exercise. I agree with previous posters, there’s no point in letting everything rot. I’m going to plant up beds for summer too. It’s not hard to keep your distance - all the plots are about 10m x 10m

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/03/2020 07:26

All travel on roads, trains and buses was also banned unless it’s essential to get to work

Was it?

StarShapedWindow · 24/03/2020 07:27

Splodgetastic - yes, you can go in your garden. My DC are virtually living in our atm.

Rocketinapocket · 24/03/2020 07:28

I’m going to mine.
