In the Torygraph today, doctors say this should be included in the symptoms

Hope this helps:
"The official list of coronavirus symptoms should be expanded to include loss of smell and taste, senior medics have demanded, as patients also report stomach pains and sore eyes.

Ordering those with impared smell and taste to self-isolate could significantly slow the spread of Covid-19, the experts said.

Currently, the government demands only that people with a persistent dry cough or a high temperature, or both, self-isolate for at least seven days to protect the wider public.

However, specialist doctors say that in recent days they have been “inundated” with a wave of patients reporting the sudden loss - usually within 24 hours - of their sense of smell and taste.

Only a minority have gone on to develop the formally recognised symptoms of Covid-19.

I've had this for 2 days. Wondering the same.

Lindy2 · 23/03/2020 12:00

Self isolate with your family.

Oh crap... It came on last night. I couldn't taste me tea. DS said there was a really bad smell in the downstairs loo (after I'd used it - cheeky bugger) but I had no idea. Didn't think a thing of it but this morning my breakfast was just 'stuff' in my mouth and I've been bleaching but cant smell the bleach.

So do have to isolate the kids too? They're due to go to their dad's at the weekend

OP posts:
Dhalandchips · 23/03/2020 16:49

Help anyone? Do I keep the kids home at the weekend or send them to their dad's?

They stay at home with you for 14 days.

Nquartz · 23/03/2020 16:52

You should all stay in unfortunately

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 23/03/2020 16:54

However it could also be a symptom of other viruse, you just dont know so should isolate

rogueantimatter · 23/03/2020 17:13

DS has this. Loads of his students friends at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London have this or have had it recently. Also many at Trinity at Conservatoire.

DS had a headache for 2 days then sudden onset total loss of smell. Can breath through his nose but can't smell Vicks in a bowl of hot water. We are both staying in till it's better and a week after for me.

50but17inside · 23/03/2020 17:24

I work for nhs and rang Nhs sickline to report this sudden onset anosmia in my young adult children but was told “you are expected in”. PHE advice has not been updated yet despite recommendations of the ENT profession. I wore a mask all day which freaked my colleagues but I am sure I am now incubating it. Awful for everyone around me but what should I have done?

Dhalandchips · 23/03/2020 18:39

Their dad is likely to be an arse about not seeing them, maybe I should wait a couple of days before I tell him, see if I get ill? Nuts situation!

My sense of smell is impaired (usually have a nose like a bloodhound) but my sense of taste is almost non-existent.

DP and I have both had a fever/aches/cough bug (we're on our 10th day of self-isolation), and I felt too shite to notice if it my taste and smell were bad until the other day.

DP says his are fine. Weird.

FlashyOctopus · 23/03/2020 18:49

Please don’t wait to see if you get ill - you could very well have it and this be the only symptom you get. I’d tell him now, let him be an arse and batten down the hatches for a fortnight indoors!

Dhalandchips · 23/03/2020 19:18

Oh dear @flashy I fear you may be right. Bite the bullet time..

Dhalandchips · 23/03/2020 21:51

Well that's answered my question then!

I have had no sense of smell or taste since Thursday last week so on day 6 and no improvement. No other symptoms except for a few cracking headaches the week before.

I've taken a couple of antihistamines yesterday and today just in case it's hayfever or something but no improvement so I assume not. Whole family are self-isolating as a result.

I can't believe this isn't listed as a "must isolate symptom".

Hiphopopotamus · 24/03/2020 13:47

Please can anyone say if they’ve had this and their sense of smell has returned? I’m on day 4 now with no smell or taste. I’m self isolating as I also have a cough and fever so almost certainly Covid-19. But I’m absolutely terrified that the loss of smell is permanent. Has anyone had it return yet?

Cornishbelle · 24/03/2020 14:29

Bump, I'm the same hiphop

Hiphopopotamus · 24/03/2020 16:44

It’s the not knowing! I could cope better if i knew it was only going to last for a short time

Dhalandchips · 24/03/2020 17:51

I have lost my appetite because I can't taste my food. Miserable.

rogueantimatter · 25/03/2020 09:40

Some of DS friends say their sense of smell returned. One after about a fortnight, one after about a week.

rhowton · 25/03/2020 09:52

I have lost my sense of smell and taste and it's just awful! Coupled with horrible headaches and what can only be described as the worst hangover I have ever had!

Cornishbelle · 27/03/2020 15:02

@Hiphopopotamus my sense of smell is starting to come back very slow though. Hope you're finding the same
