Packed lunches for kids on free school meals to be collected at school?!
AccidentsAhoy · 23/03/2020 08:21
Just got a text saying this.
I mean... What?
Surely the whole point is people STAYING AWAY from school? A high % of our school has FSM.
Were in isolation so can't even go get them anyway.
Is this the government response to this issue? To have every parent traipse down to school at the same time each day
dementedpixie · 23/03/2020 08:23
I think in Glasgow they have provided loaded cards for farmfoods. My local schools are providing lunches in school too
PanicOnTheStreets85 · 23/03/2020 08:24
There'll be some parents though who wouldn't spend any money or vouchers on a lunch for the child.
The schools are between a rock and a hard place 🤷♀️
enjoyingSun · 23/03/2020 08:26
One school is doing this in our area for all surrounding schools - it's cold food sandwiches ect and over a set time period - couple of hours.
Another two schools are open for care of children for entrie set area given places which have to be applied for every two weeks.

They are trying their best in tough times.
If you don’t need it don’t take it. If you do and can’t go yourself ask someone to pick it up and drop it off
Lovelydovey · 23/03/2020 08:27
Ours are inviting FSM to come in and have a hot meal but only for 30 mins and with a parent (ie not childcare). A tough one as this is encouraging contact but I guess for some families this will be essential.
AccidentsAhoy · 23/03/2020 08:28
I would have a ware house appropriated with a weeks worth of supplies. Break the collection times down into small group a appointments and have families collect a week's worth of lunch ingredients, bag of apples, loaf of bread etc.. In small groups
Or ask local volunteers if they could drive round and do doorstep drop off?
AgentProvocateur · 23/03/2020 08:28
Do you want them delivered to your door? I think that would be logistically impossible.
LemonGingerCakes · 23/03/2020 08:28
What solution do you suggest?
It like closing restaurants but keeping takeaways open.
Should staff hand deliver to everyone?
Go on. Tell us how you’d do it, op,
AccidentsAhoy · 23/03/2020 08:30
Thing is I do need it, on long term illness benefits and in self isolation.
But simply can't risk going every day.
lamppostdog · 23/03/2020 08:30
Schools are doing their best, staff are putting themselves at risk providing care for children of key workers. Just be grateful something is being done for fsm kids
lamppostdog · 23/03/2020 08:31
Where is this warehouse coming from ? How do you make sure people only go at their allotted time ?
BeansOnToast4T · 23/03/2020 08:53
My son goes to an amazing special school - the school is closed to all pupils but some staff are in providing telephone support service for parents. Those eligible for FSM are having a hot meal that meets the pupils dietary needs delivered to home - if there is a sibling at home they are being offered a hot meal too so that they get the same.
Schools can never please everyone but they are doing their best!!!
playthestation · 23/03/2020 08:56
Our schools are doing this also. They have said that anyone who can't collect their food can contact school and they will arrange delivery. I think in a realist let short space of time they have actually arranged a reasonable method.
The idea of having a warehouse, appointments etc is hugely unrealistic.
Contact your school and see if they have provision for people who can't collect.
WindowGazer2 · 23/03/2020 09:02
I'm one of the people who are going to be in schools looking after these kids and handing out the lunches. Please remember that we are exposed with undoubted close contact to lots of people (with no PPE). We all just do what we need to to help get through this.
Tashalburrows · 23/03/2020 09:04
We have been told to go this afternoon to reception and we will be seen one at a time. They will give enough for the week so we do not have to go back everyday.
They are doing there best and expecting it to be delivered is madness.
backaftera2yearbreak · 23/03/2020 09:06
Staff who work in the kitchens appear to be delivering them here
Tobermory · 23/03/2020 09:10
OP, schools found out school Closures at the same time as the rest of the population. They were given the same vague information as everyone else- the key worker list came out sometime Thursday night, early hours of Friday. There has been v v little in the way of guidance for schools as to how to deal with this unprecedented situation. So since Friday morning consider what they have had to put in place with limited staff. now you’re unhappy that the provision that’s been made to provide food isn’t satisfactory.
I think you’re blaming the wrong group.
The government could have procured a warehouse -for every school? I don’t know where they would get these empty warehouses from though? How would you police this collection because schools are stretched to breaking point already just providing care for vulnerable and key worker chn .
As someone said up there as, schools are doing their best!! Cut everyone some slack in this very very difficult time
edwinbear · 23/03/2020 09:35
There is simply no pleasing some people is there. Would you like them personally delivered OP? By limo perhaps?
PepePig · 23/03/2020 09:53
If you need the food, go. If you want to be precious then leave it. No one has the time to deliver 100s of meals every day. Why don't you make your own arrangements instead of sitting on your arse expecting everyone to rally after you?
You have to take some responsibility as a parent, you know.
SallyLovesCheese · 23/03/2020 10:00
Having a big warehouse leaves it open to abuse by those who don't need the food. Who would staff the warehouse? How would they know the adult collecting actually had children at the school entitled to FSM? At least done from school, there are staff available who know the parents.
Honestly, schools and their staff can't do anything right, can we? We're still open, we're providing care, we're offering food, we're setting work...still not enough.
Divebar · 23/03/2020 10:01
I have nothing but admiration for schools and all their staff ( kitchen included) for all their efforts to keep the show on the road. If you’re isolating ask a friend or neighbour to collect it for you ( I would do it) but please stop whining. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.
BertBox · 23/03/2020 10:44
I think it's absolutely amazing that this is being offered, with barely any time to sort out the logistics. I can understand your reluctance to go to collect it, but I'd imagine the social distancing will be a lot easier to maintain than a supermarket.
