Hi with the new measures they are putting in place and to protect ourselves, and for my family members who have asthma. What is classed as severe asthma? Thanks xx

Anyone who has been regularly hospitalised because of asthma.

Anyone with brittle asthma.

LittleLittleLittle · 22/03/2020 19:20

In fact www.asthma.org.uk/advice/severe-asthma/what-is-severe-asthma/

If you are on a combination inhaler, such as Fostair, with a higher dose of steroids, for example 200/6.
Or higher dose ICS with an LKTR (montelukast).

FthisS · 22/03/2020 19:55

Severe asthma is a diagnosed condition different to other asthma it is also known as brittle asthma. My son has diagnosed brittle (severe) asthma he is 12 he takes 3 inhalers, montelukast, azythromycin long term and 8 steroid tablets a day

The asthma UK link is very good

Mynydd · 22/03/2020 19:59

@filthyanimal does Qvae or clenil fall into that category? Thanks

User7764217 · 22/03/2020 20:01

Yes but only those taking the 250 microgram dosage need isolate

Mynydd · 22/03/2020 20:01

I've seen the link now, thank you

User7764217 · 22/03/2020 20:02

dollface19 · 22/03/2020 21:26

Thank you, I’m on seretide but not the highest dose and never been hospitalised with asthma and never been told that it’s severe or brittle asthma

I’m already social distancing and wfh but will have to venture out occasionally for monthly prescriptions and essentials like topping up my electric and for bread and milk if I can get them (but won’t be trawling every shop in a 20 mile radius for them)

thepeopleversuswork · 22/03/2020 21:50

Thanks: I can't get onto the asthma UK link at the moment (probably too many people checking). My DD has asthma but not been told its severe. It's a fairly unusual type of asthma as its non-atopic (so not triggered by any allergens) and not triggered by exercise. The only type of trigger is respiratory illness.
She's asymptomatic the vast majority of the time and doesn't wheeze unless she's having a reaction to a respiratory issue caused by a virus. Most of the time she's OK but one cold in every four or five she'll beg a very severe cough which can go on for weeks and can lead to wheeze, tracheal tug, occasionally loss of oxygen.

She's on clenil (lower dose) daily and montelukast. Salbutomol for acute episodes but doesn't take it outside of that. Been to A&E maybe six or seven times in her life, admitted once. Has had maybe four courses of predisolone in her life.

Would anyone class that as severe?

ssd · 22/03/2020 21:55

I'd be checking with your gp.

HairyHoraceHaggis · 22/03/2020 21:58

It has clenil 200mg on list. I think other factors are taken into account though, it her dose is lower than that - I.e - has she needed steroids twice in the last year, for example.

thepeopleversuswork · 22/03/2020 22:13

thanks everyone. Quite a lot of grey areas here. I'll call the GP

Allihearischasemarshallskye · 22/03/2020 22:34

So my 2 year old has been admitted to hospital 8 times in 2019 each time with viral wheeze . He’s on preventer clenil 100mg 4 puffs daily and Montelukast each night .
It only gives guidance for 200mg , so I’m guessing his undiagnosed asthma is not severe and in the high category?? Even though we have open access to the pead ward ??
We are all keeping back from everyone just to be safe

PointlessUsername · 22/03/2020 22:35

I am confused about DS too. He has been on 5 short courses of steriods in the last year and was on seretide ,But that has now been changed to Symbicort and i cannot find any information on that?.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 22/03/2020 22:41

My fostair has been upped recently which is enough to put me in that list.

They also said anyone whsoe asthma is uncontrolled but by that they mean using blue inhaler 3 x a week 🙄.

So many people who dont think of them selves as severe could be.

Ive never been hospitalised though. Just guven steroids with a chest infection.

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 22/03/2020 22:42

And I cant work out if being on the list is good - govt help to get food etc or bad - means they wont treat us.... ie I suppose I dont want to argue to be moved onto it 🙄

justasking111 · 22/03/2020 22:43

Anyone using a peak flow gadget to keep an eye on their puff strength?

justasking111 · 22/03/2020 22:48

I find at this time of year piriton is essential, I get a bad reaction to pollen. Finding it is difficult it is sold out almost everywhere. It does help if you can get it.
