Mountain rescue are appealing for people not to go out to places where they may need rescue if they become ill as the whole team would then need to isolate if the patient was infectious.

Also A and E staff don't want to treat injured cyclists when they could be dealing with cv patients.

I saw lots of recreational cyclists out today.

Just thought it's worth saying as it might just help a bit in this crisis.

Even if cycling for recreation/exercise is banned you will be allowed to cycle commute still if that’s what you need to do. They’re not going to say to a nurse who cycles to work that they can’t come to work.

Yetanotherbloominnamechange · 23/03/2020 16:49

I think people are mistaking cycling for a dangerous activity.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 23/03/2020 16:56

I'm expected to stay indoors and 3 ft away fro my own family for at least 12 weeks.

NHS staff are expected to look after patients in very difficult circumstances which will shortly become very extreme. See Italy.

I just wish everyone would do their bit to free up the beds so fewer people will die.

These will include relatives of people on here and people on here.

I don't understand why you would not understand that.

Cycling to a key worker job is fine-clearly that is the right balance of risk.

OP posts:
DownyBuds · 23/03/2020 17:01

It is a matter of common sense and minimising risk.

We did some gardening yesterday. Decided not to climb a ladder to cut some bushes which normally we wouldn’t Think twice about. I do not want to end up in hospital at the moment

Branster · 23/03/2020 17:02

Very good post OP.
The official advice is very clear: don’t travel unless it us essential to do so. Getting fresh air and excercise is NOT essential. Why can’t people just get it?!

midgebabe · 23/03/2020 17:04

You get get fresh air by opening a window
You can exercise doing burpees in your living room

You do not need to go into the hills , because some of you will end up calling mountain rescue

Many of whom are medics and really have better things to be doing

UK climbing have closed log books

adaline · 23/03/2020 17:05

I think people are mistaking cycling for a dangerous activity.

The whole point is to minimise risk.

If you go off up a mountain and fall (a common occurrence) and you need to be airlifted off the mountain, your actions are putting volunteers at risk.

Cycling and mountain biking are not essential activities!

BeetrootRocks · 23/03/2020 17:07

All this shows yet again is how many people hate cyclists!

Is it more dangerous than driving a motorcycle? No.

Always interesting to see this. Other countries seem to incorporate cycling in as a form of transport without any hoo ha.

Poor PP who got smugly asked well what will you do if you can't cycle to work HMMMM?

Pathetic.

BeetrootRocks · 23/03/2020 17:11

The biggest cause of injury and death on the roads is cars.

I'd rather more people got out of cars and onto bikes tbh

Better for environment
Good exercise
Minimal risk of killing or seriously injuring someone else

People do love their cars though don't they. So handwave away the issues and risks associated with them.

PotholeParadise · 23/03/2020 17:11

What will you do if it's banned, like it has been in other countries?

Perhaps she'll go on public transport instead?

OHW----

It's an environmentally friendly form of transport which is done solo. Banning cycle-commuting and forcing people to take public transport is obviously a stupid, reckless move.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 23/03/2020 17:11

My dh is a keen cyclist.

It's brilliant for his health and his social life. I don't hate cyclists.

I love hillwalking.

I love fell running.

Just Not Now

This is a one in a century nightmare.

We need all the help we can get.

Someone died cycling down a tarmac road (ok a steep one) in the Lake District yesterday. Had all the mountain rescue out as well as paramedics.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 23/03/2020 17:13

DH is still cycling carefully as he always does as it is not something that has been banned yet but he has bought himself a smart turbo trainer for when he can’t actually cycle and he can set it up in the garage or garden. Apparently there was high demand for these things at the moment

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 23/03/2020 17:13

Avoid travel unless completed essential.

That covers risks of car driving.

Clearly driving or cycling to a key worker job is fine.

OP posts:
BeetrootRocks · 23/03/2020 17:13

She said she would have to walk an hour and starts work at 4am so would need to leave home at 3,am

Not all places are well served with public transport
Public transport is being pared back
Looking at the pics from the tube today, having s person alone on s bike is way better. Reducing risk to themselves and others.

Pothole you want to rethink your plan to get people off bikes and onto public transport?

Mintjulia · 23/03/2020 17:14

Cycling is one of the few forms of exercise, where you are guaranteed to be 2m from anyone else.

I took my 11yo out today for an hour around the lanes to burn off some energy. There was no traffic and we only saw a man on a tractor, across a field.

I went running on Saturday morning too - at 6am - through local woods. I saw a dog walker about 100 yards away. No-one else.

We don't all live in towns. I'll use my common sense to balance isolating us effectively with keeping my child calm. Thanks

BeetrootRocks · 23/03/2020 17:15

Oh my post was to pothole.

Who seems to think it's a good idea to get people up at 3am/ push more into public transport.

adaline · 23/03/2020 17:15

All this shows yet again is how many people hate cyclists!

My DH is a keen cyclist and goes each weekend. I have nothing against cyclists but now is not the same to take unnecessary risks. The emergency services have enough to do. You won't collapse and die if you don't go out on your bike for a few months.

Poor PP who got smugly asked well what will you do if you can't cycle to work HMMMM?

How is asking a question being smug? Cycling has been banned in other countries - let's not pretend like it might not happen here. It's a genuine question!

BeetrootRocks · 23/03/2020 17:15

Sorry leave at 3am. Get up earlier obv.

PotholeParadise · 23/03/2020 17:17

Pothole you want to rethink your plan to get people off bikes and onto public transport?

I was being sarcastic.

BeetrootRocks · 23/03/2020 17:17

Well yes it sounded very smug.

Maybe it wasn't meant that way.

Has the person who said it responded to the poster whon replied saying well is have to walk, leaving at 3am.

BeetrootRocks · 23/03/2020 17:19

Oh it was you who asked adaline!

If it was a genuine question why didn't you say anything when she replied? Like, oh that would be shit. Hopefully it won't come to that. Or, what job do you do? Or, will you be safe walking for an hour in the dark...

If it was a genuine question then generally the response would merit a reaction.

It wasn't a genuine question, it was smug.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 23/03/2020 17:19

I don't live in a town. I live in a cycling/runners paradise.

Which is exactly why the emergency services here are appealing for people not to do these things.

OP posts:
cologne4711 · 23/03/2020 17:19

Getting fresh air and exercise is NOT essential

Of course it is! Otherwise we'll all be ill from lack of vitamin D and fat and causing stress on the NHS in other ways.

However, I do get the point relating to the risks of falling off your bike or being knocked off. I won't cycle at the moment unless I am using it as a means of transport, rather than recreationally.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 23/03/2020 17:20

They haven’t actually banned cycling though it’s just the opinions of randoms on the internet who you can ignore anyway, it’s like how people spout on Facebook, just follow current government advice
