I really don't want to take her to the hospital right now. We're in self isolation with symptoms.

A friend offered to go chemist and get stristrips.

I've cleaned with savlon antiseptic cream.

What would you do?

Hopefully that will be the only scar she gains from this pandemic. She can always get plastic surgery at a later date.
CORRECT DECISION OP Flowers

When I was very little I smacked into a table edge. It split my lip and damaged a tooth. My mum took me to the health centre and the dr said he wanted to try strips instead of stitches because he thought it would heal more neatly. I do have a neat scar and it has faded a great deal over the years. I can see why you've made that decision.

addictedtotheflats · 22/03/2020 21:02

That wound is fine to steri strip its got clean edges and will come together nicely, at the most it could be glued but given the current situation steri strips are the best option. Just keep it dry for 7 days and it should have healed.

Knowhowufeel2 · 23/03/2020 01:21

Good on you @AccidentsAhoy. Sounds like you're raising a daughter who knows beauty and self worth are about more than just appearances.

As I said previously, I would've (and have) steri stripped very similar wounds with no issues whatsoever. Flowers

AccidentsAhoy · 23/03/2020 16:16

Just cleaning it. It's sticking together well.

I've ordered some bio oil for when it's healed completely.

It's looking good. I also agree with your call.

People on Mumsnet would be running to the GP/A&E for a pin prick though.

hairyxmasturkey · 23/03/2020 17:09

I would have done the same in your situation OP

Lordfrontpaw · 23/03/2020 17:12

I did a similar thing to my chin when I was about 5. It got a plaster (and a telling off for borrowing my sisters bike) and I just have a white line there now that no one ever notices. I have worse scars from far less.

She is brave - it must’ve hurt like hell.

AccidentsAhoy · 23/03/2020 17:19

That's good to know Lord x thanks

She's done a good job there op! Very neat cut!!!

For what it's worth I think you made the right call, if 3 professionals have said home treat and your daughter is happy to. Shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks.

AccidentsAhoy · 23/03/2020 18:08

She's been really brave. Even with cleaning it out. Am proud of her.

That looks much better today, I think any scarring will be minimal

Scbchl · 24/03/2020 11:29

Just posting to say I also think you made the right call. I'm gobsmacked there was still some know it alls posting you should go despite the pharmacist and paramedics advice. And it looks like a scratch now its healing so well, so well done on not putting more strain on the system and keeping yourselves and others safe.

Lordfrontpaw · 24/03/2020 11:36

It looks very 'neat' and I think she might have a wee white line but it won't be noticeable. DH never noticed my scar until I mentioned it to him.

SirVixofVixHall · 24/03/2020 11:38

My dd had a very similar cut through her eyebrow as a baby. As she was so small the plastics team felt they had to give her a GA to stitch it, and that a GA was too risky , so she had steristrips. I think glue would have given a far better result actually. The wound did not heal at all with the strips and had to be left open in the end, so she does have a much wider scar than she would have done with stitches. They said she could have it revised later, when she was old enough for a local ( which we have not done). So if this fails to knit tightly , which it may do, then your dd could have the scar revised at a later date under a local anaesthetic.
Apparently dds scar didn’t close because we waited so long in A&E to see the plastics paed. By then it had started to heal over while open, so the steristrips didn’t close it. If you did your dds cut fairly quickly then there is a better chance of a decent result.
You can buy a silicone gel called Dermatix (Amazon sell it) that you put on the scar once it is dry, that will stop it becoming raised or lumpy. I was advised to use it by the dermatologist, and dds scar is flat and neat.

AccidentsAhoy · 24/03/2020 12:43

Any idea how long I should keep steristripping it?

OP posts:
Cornettoninja · 24/03/2020 13:05

Most stitches are in for 10-14 days I think. Maybe keep going for a bit extra.

GCSEtears · 24/03/2020 13:34

Great. Thanks

GCSEtears · 24/03/2020 13:39

Sorry wrong thread ^

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 24/03/2020 13:45

That looks really good OP! She might have a small scar but it will be very minimal. Children's skin is pretty good at healing.

We leave stitches on the skin on for 7 days. I would steristrip it for similar time. I

sirVix is right if you get a scar there are things that can be done to minimise/remove it when she's older.

StudentHelp · 24/03/2020 13:50

It’s looking really good for the time frame. Well done for being rational Flowers

Soontobe60 · 24/03/2020 13:56

OP, did she need a tetanus, especially as it was done the garden?
You need to keep thensteristrips in place instead of replacing them to reduce the risk of infection and thus widening the scar.

PracticallyPeeps · 24/03/2020 14:07

That’s healing really well Smile
