So, we are going to be a hub school for FSM and childcare.

We are expecting 1000 children in, due to all of the local schools sending their children to us, keeping one building open.

The children will not be learning it has been confirmed. It is child care only.

Please, do not use the school childcare services unless absolutely necessary.

Working in a call centre can also be front line work? maybe she works for 111? Maybe she works in a bereavements or claims team in Financial Services so needs to help people get money they need, or a bank, or social services, or a helpline or charity supporting folk in crisis?

Not saying that is the case, but a lot of call centre workers have a very difficult and stressful job, they aren't all there trying to sell mobile phone contracts or double glazing.

Pippin2028 · 22/03/2020 00:14

This is a tough one, but you mentioned it is a deprived city so possibly this is a child's chance for food and warmth and a safe environment. I do feel for the children is isolation who are in difficult circumstances. There are no winners in this.

Fair enough - i suspected that would be the case, but just wanted to remind folks that working in a call centre isn't an easy job and a lot of them are doing an outstanding job of keeping the country running just like other services. And no, I don't work in one, I volunteered once to take calls for comic relief and believe me when you get the wee beep to tell you a call is coming through, stress level was through the roof....and that's calls that are likely to be nice people only wanting to donate money.

GrumpyHoonMain · 22/03/2020 01:02

Sky workers (especially in call centres) can qualify as key worker under utilities / comms. Internet / telecoms providers are essential during a pandemic

I have today been identified as a critical worker, I work with the homeless. I am a lone parent, but even I had a discussion today with the headmistress on how I could limit the use of the childcare provision. I don't understand why people who really don't have to put their kids in are.

Our schools seem to be running a drop in drop out. So I have stated I will only need it for an emergency hour here and there, they could go days without seeing DS as I'm working from home but then may need to go with the police to do something, or a meeting with social services things like that at the drop of a hat and will need to place DS somewhere safe, but even then I want to drop DS off for the minimum amount of time!

Less exposure, less chance of spreading the virus.

It's a pain working from home with children, it is, I had a skype call to the head of housing for our LA interupted by DS age 5 nude from the waste down exclaiming "I've done a big poo!" 🤦🏻‍♀️ but that's life right now. Luckily she saw the funny side of it whilst her two children were screaming about netflix in the background 😂

It's emergency childcare, not school. People need to understand this. I can't take my 5 year old to a drug raid with the police, bit I can do phone calls and e-mails from the house with him.

Nat6999 · 22/03/2020 01:25

Ds school 60% of pupils get free school meals, it's a secondary with 2200 pupils. I thought they were going to do some kind of voucher system so parents could get extra food?

DBML · 22/03/2020 01:52

@Nat6999

I did too. Perhaps that’s not ready yet and that’s why they’re being invited in?

What happened to no indoor mass gatherings over 100?
That sounds neglectful and could have very serious consequences.

fedup21 · 22/03/2020 17:30

I think this situation is horrific and extremely dangerous.

Have you contacted your union?

Notredamn · 22/03/2020 17:57

There are no words. Apart from swear words.
I thought our local primary school was taking a hard line by full-on closing but now I'm guessing the children who would have gone have merely been directed to another site. It's all a shit show.

Knackeredmommy · 22/03/2020 18:00

That's ridiculous! What about safeguarding needs/issues? If that many then surely at least 1 more school should open?

starrynight19 · 22/03/2020 18:02

Why on earth has each school not stayed open to minimise this.
That is irresponsible and utter madness to put all this children together.
The poor staff.
I am hoping to be working as skeleton staff with a small group of children in our school Sad

Getoutofbed25 · 22/03/2020 18:08

I’ve seen schools posting on Twitter beautiful arranged gym halls to accommodate all children in this open plan environment, no way would I be happy with that for infection control

Poppi89 · 22/03/2020 18:27

In my area those who receive FSM will get a voucher for a local supermarket - I think it is a fantastic idea but not sure how it will be implemented or how the parents can get the food if the shelves are empty!
I think there needs to be more strict criteria for allowing them into school. Surely the majority of people needing child care are those who are key workers and single parents.

DBML · 22/03/2020 18:29

Yes, this certainly isn’t just my school. It’s the only way the LAs can accommodate all of the children.
Many will be FSM, who can just collect food hopefully and won’t need to stay (as nasty as that sounds). But there aren’t clear guidelines as yet, so I guess we’ll see how it works over the coming days.

Why on earth has each school not stayed open to minimise this

  • because we can't staff them all - not just teachers, but first aiders, safeguarding leads, cleaners, cooks - and also we need to plan for if more staff are ill over time.

Turned out better than expected - less than 5% of pupils at school today in my LA.

Smellbellina · 23/03/2020 20:46

We had 8 staff and 7 kids today!
