Has anyone noticed in their area that people are panic buying things OTHER than food? Like regular things such as clothes?! Perhaps it's just my area but crikey!

I saw hoards of shoppers running across a car park to a local home bargains store, because they were unloading a trolley of toilet rolls. It was laughable to watch but realistically just greedy and down right pathetic

jcurve · 21/03/2020 22:03

I tried to buy a set of kettlebells today to stave off the inactivity. They’re as rare as hen’s teeth, I’ve paid slightly over the odds on a physiotherapy supplies website after a significant amount of time on Google.

Plant seeds are also in very short supply based on today’s visit to Homebase. No one wants to grow carrots, parsnips or radishes though!

SFCA · 21/03/2020 22:03

I think they need to make it explicitly clear that EVEN IF THE WHOLE COUNTRY GOES INTO LOCKDOWN THE SUPERMARKETS WILL STAY OPEN!!!

People do not need to buy for 2 weeks or 12 weeks just their usual shop. Social isolation and distancing are to keep us safe, the government are not planning to watch us all starve instead

gluteustothemaximus · 21/03/2020 22:07

Are we just generally thick as a country?

I think so.

Today, I had to pop to the shops. I had to go, as the Tesco delivery we had booked weeks ago, turned up with very little. This was down to people queuing up at 6am and ransacking the place, so little left for the deliveries.

So I went out. Only to Iceland as I knew Tesco would be a breeding ground of germs and thick people.

Iceland wasn't far off. I did everything I could to avoid any contact, kept my 2 metre distances, but NO ONE ELSE DID. No one else gave any fucks. People bumped into me. Coughed near me. Not just food shopping, but pottering about, sniffing candles. Not a fucking clue.

Nearly 800 dead in Italy today. Why do we think that's not coming our way soon? I'm dreading going into work Monday (looking after key worker children) as I have no idea if everyone is socially distancing.

The sun came out today. We heard an ice cream van. Well done, let's bring everyone out of their houses to queue up for a sodding ice cream a la virus.

Fucks sake. Fucking stay indoors.

MusicToMyEars800 · 21/03/2020 22:08

People are just not doing their normal shops though, I saw one woman buying 8bottles of bleach last week m, that’s not normal weekly /fortnightly shopping... along with 15 tins of beans, 8 tins of mackerel, 4 double chocolate Gateaus and more.

Verily1 · 21/03/2020 22:09

Chest freezers and laptops

BlackeyedSusan · 21/03/2020 22:18

I am not panic buying.... I can't get out yet.

PotholeParadise · 21/03/2020 22:20

Are we just generally thick as a country?

Yes.

10storeylovesong · 21/03/2020 22:27

I tried to buy bubble solution today to keep my kids entertained in the garden. It had gone up from £1.50 a bottle to £7 a bottle!!

gigi556 · 21/03/2020 22:37

@jcurve please tell me where you got the kettlebells!!!

GreenTulips · 21/03/2020 22:38

I guessed squash would be next and long life juice.

Companies are offering free delivery on garden supplies which is a good idea.

Can’t get a thermometer, all online are from China and would take weeks to arrive.

Have soap me shower gel etc as generally but weekly and have a few spare.

Think toothbrushes will be next.

pumpkintree · 21/03/2020 22:39

washing up liquid if you can get it will make bubbles.

RizzoFromGrease · 21/03/2020 22:48

Coronatto with flake please.

bakedbeanzontoast · 22/03/2020 00:13

Bloody hell. I mean I can see why someone would want to buy I don't know, cereal or tinned carrots but tights?! Paper plates? Even all the magazines were gone from a Morrison's I tried to get milk in!!! 🤪

It's like folk think something is going to happen to prevent us ever buying anything ever again!

@Spacie yes I noticed that too with the fitness stuff

MissyJane2 · 22/03/2020 00:19

Oh yes.
I think they are.
When I go to Tesco and Sainsburys I can't get bin bags, no paracetamal or cold and flu medicines, no frozen food, no fruit and vegetables no nothing.
It's no even worth going into the store now.

safariboot · 22/03/2020 00:26

A few people have confirmed what I assumed to be the case - that delivery resources are being diverted to high-priority items. So empty shelves of things deemed non-essential are down to reduced supply not increased demand.

VanGoghsDog · 22/03/2020 00:30

Bin bags makes sense, the council are asking for personal waste (tissues, wipes, sanitary ware) from households where there are symptoms to be double bagged to protect their staff. Also, you can't put them in the outside bin for 72 hours.

disneydatknee · 22/03/2020 00:32

Last Tuesday I wanted to make cherry bakewell and couldn't find glace cherries anywhere. Who's panic buying glace cherries?!

Whiteswansong · 22/03/2020 14:43

Where I am (secret location) the supermarket was fine today, still no pasta, rice, tins of soup or paracetamol but we don't need those at the moment. Plenty of fresh fruit and veg, bread and eggs.

Deelish75 · 22/03/2020 14:54

It's the baked beans I can't find, just a four pack of baked beans, I've been trying since Weds. Whoever has stockpiled all the baked beans I'm glad I'm not on lockdown with them 🤢

Whiteswansong · 22/03/2020 15:00

Our Morrisons had some 6 pack of beans for £3, perhaps check them?

MissyJane2 · 22/03/2020 15:54

But we have not got a Morrisons where I am. But the Morrisons online store does deliver to my area. I have checked my postcode with the website.

MissyJane2 · 22/03/2020 15:56

bakedbeanzontoast-

Why would they need so much clothes if they are not going out for 3 months?

Frenchfancy · 22/03/2020 16:09

I am watching this from a country in full confinement mode with bemusement. One of the only reasons I am allowed out of the house is to go to the supermarket. The shelves are fully stacked. The only thing missing is hand sanitiser because that is all going to the hospitals. The pasta shelf has a limited choice but there is plenty to be had. I could get meat, eggs, milk, wine even loo roll. What is making the British public panic like this?
