Anyone in Belfast?

Seeing a lot of posts in mainland UK saying people in their local areas are not following social distancing very well and the streets are still busy etc. I'm in Belfast and my estate is so quiet! I'm in isolation but have taken the dog on short 15-20 minute walks (small dog) and the streets are empty in the estate! I've seen one other person during these walks also walking a dog and I was able to stay way more than 2m away from her. My postman knocked the door and by the time I'd gotten up and opened it he has already left the parcel on my doorstep and was back standing at the garden gate waiting to make sure I got it and he had gloves on. I think people in Belfast for the most part seem to be doing what they're supposed to!

My isolation ends in a few more days and then I'll return to work. Non-essential retail and company is still open for now so I have no choice, can't just say I'm not turning up once my isolation period finishes unfortunately.

Just wondering if it was just my area or others in Belfast finding we're taking this more seriously than the mainland at all?

Mid Ulster area here. I was out for 30 minutes this morning, and local town was very busy. Cafes and restaurants all still open. Seems to me as business as usual.

Nogodsnomasters · 21/03/2020 15:38

You're kidding? So does Boris' pubs, restaurant, cafe, gym lock down announced last night not apply in Northern Ireland even though we're apart of the UK itself? I fully expected all our cafes etc to be closed today! Though as I say I'm isolated so can't find out first hand.

Belfast here too. Last I was out was on Thursday for work. The streets were majorly empty compared to the usual packed lunch time bustle. I actually thought we have complied quickly, perhaps seeing as how the South reacted. Not so sure now reading tootsey's post.

StillCounting123 · 21/03/2020 16:23

I'm East Co. Antrim area.

Business as usual here - plenty of traffic on roads. All local cafes and gyms closed, but shopping centres Tesco etc all open.

I live in a busy street plenty of passers by - most of whom are elderly! See plenty of groups of teens and kids!!

My own kids aren't allowed out of the garden without me at the moment. Not risking it.

StillCounting123 · 21/03/2020 16:26

Took my youngest to an open area to run around today and he was upset cuz the playparks we passed were locked shut Sad

I'm in Dublin. Its very quiet in my area. The restaurants and coffee shops haven't been told to close but most have chosen to.

I 'm glad to hear its quiet in Belfast too. We need to be on the same page to get through this one.

Nogodsnomasters · 21/03/2020 17:02

heebie I feel the same about people of Belfast getting on board pretty quick with the guidelines. Arlene/Michelle would need to announce or clarify that the cafes/restaurant closures apply here too. I know a lot have closed of their own accord the last 7 days but not all.

stillcounting123 I imagine super markets won't close Tesco etc but I do know my local Asda is shortening it's opening hours from next week, not by much just to 8pm instead of 10pm but I suppose it helps a bit.

moltensilver glad Dublin is quiet too, we definitely need to be on the same page considering how easy it is to cross the border.

I’m in Hillsborough- the village is still busy and I’ve never seen the M&S food hall so consistently jammers. Everyday is like a Saturday, then you go through the home and clothes departments and there’s tumbleweeds.

In Boots though the pharmacy staff were actually manning the queues to enforce social distancing which felt very odd!

heebie · 21/03/2020 17:15

Definitely Milton. I have felt so totally helpless watching the South shut down but us carrying on as normal.

We haven't heard much from our glorious leaders at all have we Hmm? Probably not used to working anymore.

Nogodsnomasters · 22/03/2020 07:39

That's it, stormont haven't had to do much for 3 years and right after they make a come back a worldwide pandemic breaks out, they're probably cursing themselves for not waiting a bit longer.

I'm in Belfast and was driving up the Lisburn Road yesterday and it was pretty busy. I don't think people are taking it seriously enough.

Nogodsnomasters · 22/03/2020 11:27

hopeishere love your user name. Maybe it's just the estates are quiet then but the shopping areas are not. Still not fully clear about whether the cafe/restaurant/pubs closures applies here or not.

North Belfast here but work in City Centre - absolutely no one about on my estate either and the only person I have seen is the postman.

What has surprised me most are the buses - moving to a summer service from Monday, but they have been practically empty.

Nogodsnomasters · 22/03/2020 13:16

noshithemlock my friends DH works on the gliders and said from last week they've been basically empty. I didn't know about the reduced service though til you mentioned.

Primary is closing tonight too throughout the UK. I'm wondering if they are going to shut non essential shops tonight?

heebie · 22/03/2020 14:31

Primark

Poppet1974 · 22/03/2020 14:43

I’m in Belfast... my street is very quiet. I think the message is getting through but there’ll always be some who carry on as normal... shocking and socially irresponsible!

Nogodsnomasters · 22/03/2020 14:45

Just saw the Primark update there myself. I work in a non essential shop which hasn't closed yet, I'm due back in on Wednesday when my isolation ends if it's still open at that point.

StillCounting123 · 22/03/2020 22:15

Sherlock maybe buses and gliders are so empty cuz the schools are off, unis are off and people are WFH?

I was out in the car today and the roads were reasonably busy - no idea where people were going as it's not even like churches were open!!

(I was driving to leave a Mother's Day gift in my mum's garden for her... So maybe that's what everyone else was doing today too!!)

StillCounting123 · 22/03/2020 22:16

hemlock sorry for my autocorrect of your username.

MindyStClaire · 22/03/2020 22:26

I'm in Bangor. We've been going for walks with the buggy, it's definitely a lot quieter than normal and most people making the effort to avoid each other. All restaurants and cafes closed, except for takeout.

However have heard of lots of teens gathering in some of the local parks.
