To ask Is it inevitable you’ll catch the virus do you think?

Aibu to ask Is catching the virus an inevitability or can you fend it off by taking loads of vitamins etc?

I am taking tons of supplements at the moment including extra vitamin c, zinc etc. Pointless exercise or worth doing?

I know because it’s a new virus we have no Immunity to it so does that mean we have to catch it? Or will some people be able to fend it off?

There’s loads of videos going round of seriously ill people in their 30s and 40s on ventilators and it’s freaking me out (have stopped watching now!)

I’m just confused by it all!

OP posts:
Stressedout10 · 21/03/2020 15:08

No we will all get it eventually. Like all viruses some will be mild enough not to release whilst some will get very ill and die.

IWantToBreakFreee · 21/03/2020 15:09

If we have had it, can we then get it again? Does any one know

Stressedout10 · 21/03/2020 15:09

Sorry posted to soon
But most people will have a moderate case and recover at home

MakeMineALarge1 · 21/03/2020 15:11

There are people in their 30 - 40 on vents for lots of reasons all year round!

Sweetbabycheezits · 21/03/2020 15:12

Supplements are pointless anyway, but they definitely won't fend off this virus. The best we can do is listen to the advice given, and if you're part of a vulnerable group, make sure you're extra careful.
There's just no way to predict whether or not we'll get it, we just have to hunker down, stay at home(if possible), and take care of ourselves as best we can.

halcyondays · 21/03/2020 15:12

No. The worst case estimate was 80% would get it.

Ohtherewearethen · 21/03/2020 15:12

I believe there is a Corona Virus Topic where threads about the Corona Virus can be posted and discussed by those who wish to. Otherwise every topic gets overwhelmed by Corona threads it's becoming increasingly difficult to avoid hearing about it.

halcyondays · 21/03/2020 15:13

And that was if we did nothing, your risk will be reduced if you are strict about hand washing, social distancing etc.

Mummyshark2019 · 21/03/2020 15:15

We will all get it. Just a matter of time. Some will have already had it without knowing. Others will suffer greatly. Terrifying times.

Zilla1 · 21/03/2020 15:16

I think you might be mixing several different dimensions, OP.

  1. is it inevitable? Some countries seem to have made progress in reducing spread with testing and contact tracing. If you are in these countries (South Korea, for example) then it might not be inevitable.

  2. In the UK, we seem to have adopted 'more of an inevitability' without systematic testing leading to a goal of delay and reducing the peaks/possibly having sequential peaks. Here it seems less likely that the virus will become endemic unless spread can be delayed until vaccines are available (12-18 months likely).

  3. You seem to be focused on supplements and immune system with regard to avoiding infection. I've not seen any evidence that you will avoid infection by this, though good health will probably help with reduced symptoms or survivability (This is usually what happens though not always the case - Spanish 'flu in 1918+ seemed to have highest mortality in healthy adults - cascade effects). There are elements of the immune system that prevent infection though 'most' of the system is devoted to fighting the infection once infected then preventing reinfection after recovery.

Social media/videos circulating are not renowned for accuracy and truth and representing proportions. For Covid-19, it still looks like children and healthy adults recover well. The last research I saw even said a significant majority of the elderly and at risk recover.

Good luck.

@ohtherewearethen Couldn't agree more!! Maybe we should go and blast Baby Names with _Chat, riddle Relationships with Parking threads or fill The Archers thread up with AIBU?

Nononoandno · 21/03/2020 16:52

You might catch it and the lucky ones will recover some might be left with life changing health problems

nellodee · 21/03/2020 17:03

It would take a hundred years for us all to catch it and remain within the capacity of the health care system. We need to contain this and then do huge amounts of testing, contact tracing, etc. Then, when we release the lockdown, we control this like they did in South Korea and Singapore. We keep absolutely on top of it, knowing where every case is, and ready to lock down as soon as we lose track again.

And then we develop a vaccine, and we can go back to the world we once knew.

Potatobug · 21/03/2020 17:15

I think consuming strong spirits helps. They have a high alcohol content which kills viruses and bacteria. Externally and internally. Through the blood stream they go to every cell and kill nasties. I have a bottle of Canarian honey rum and I am going to put it to good use IYKWIM. I generally don’t drink but this sweet stuff is not bad. The honey takes the edge off the alcohol.

Bluntness100 · 21/03/2020 17:16

Vitamins will do nothing, but no I don’t feel it’s inevitable we will all get it, not if we follow the guidance.

I’m self isolating as my husband is considered at risk. It would have to work some magic to get to us.

Stressedout10 · 21/03/2020 17:21

@Potatobug
That is complete BS and dangerous!
Please stop spreading it

dworky · 21/03/2020 17:26

If we have had it, can we then get it again? Does any one know
Not enough is known yet to confirm length of immunity period.

BMW6 · 21/03/2020 17:34

I think consuming strong spirits helps.

I think you would have to drink so much you'd die of alcohol poisoning.
If you think this is such a great idea, YOU drink, say, 2 litres of vodka in one sitting every day and come back on here in 6 months and let us know how it went.............

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/03/2020 17:38

I definitely get less symptoms of general bugs now I run regularly and eat well. I probably still catch them.

Handfuls of vitamins are bullshit. Eat fruit and vegetables.

Wakemeuuuup · 21/03/2020 17:42

More people in Iran have died from alcohol poisoning than covid 19 according to BBC. They were told strong alcohol would disinfect their insides

iVampire · 21/03/2020 17:45

I think potatobug is teasing.....

KimMumsnet · 21/03/2020 17:46

Hi, all.
We're putting this thread in the Coronavirus topic now.
Thanks,
MNHQ

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/03/2020 17:48

As the old German poem goes, yodel dee yodel da schnapps ist gud fur cholera. Excuse terrible German grammar.

Ponoka7 · 21/03/2020 17:54

The advice is that the two most important ways to help your immune system is to do your best to destress and get enough sleep. Then get your vitamin D level up.

I think most people will get it. I think how it then goes is how quickly and severely it attacks the lungs. We aren't all starting off at the same level depending on, age and health and that's what matters.
