This is actual government guidelines
Yet some folk seem to think if you leave your house at all, you are a Covid spreading demon.
I fear lots of tension around this. See lots of very preachy, judgey posts on social media.
You cannot expect people to get not a single breath of air for months on end.

We are going for a daily walk for reasons of physical and mental wellbeing. We are self isolating with a vulnerable family member at home so are in it for the long haul, (God willing). We are fortunate because we live rurally so it is quite easy to avoid others. I have had a couple of welcome conversations with neighbours doing the same or walking their dogs, but this has been from a very safe distance.

We are seeing a lot of people driving out from the nearest towns and cities to walk in the countryside here. I have mixed feelings about this. I can understand their desire to, but I am concerned that this will add to virus spread, including to our vulnerable and elderly residents, and while the daytrippers are here some of them will also be emptying our village shops of what little stock remains.

It also means that we are having to go out either very early or very late on our walks to avoid them all.

screamer1 · 21/03/2020 17:23

We're the same @Inkpaperstars out usually quiet walk was very busy. Paranoid now that having walked past people we've put ourselves at risk. It was pretty hard to keep 2meters apart

Fivefourthree · 21/03/2020 17:24

@TableNiner, have a look at the NHS guidelines for self isolation. I was searching hard for info as I am in si due to coughing. It says even then, you can go out if you keep your distance from others.
Depends where you live. We're rural but wouldn't go out in a city. Hth Flowers

lazylinguist · 21/03/2020 17:30

Why arent these dogs on leads?

Hmm Because there are plenty of places where dogs don't have to be on leads.

We live just on the edge of the Lake District, and dh, the dc and I went for a lovely walk in the fells today. There were loads of people doing the same, with no need to be too near each other. I feel very fortunate to live in an area with so much beautiful open space and a low population density.

beingarayofsun · 21/03/2020 17:32

Paranoid now that having walked past people we've put ourselves at risk Very unlikely that walking past someone in open air is a risk, unless they had a coughing fit in your face. I'm sure you are closer to the cashier at the supermarket check out. People who work in supermarkets to stock shelves can spread germs or even the delivery men cough cough on your packages, probably more risky than a walk.

Sunshine1235 · 21/03/2020 17:36

People need to be careful even when outside though. We went to a NT property this afternoon, loads of space to roam around. It was busy with lots of people and people making no effort to stay away grok other people, walking closely when overtaking etc. It wasn’t necessary when there was so much space and made me think that probably this kind offer of the NT to open their parks is going to be shutdown soon as people don’t seem to be able to keep their distance

TableNiner · 21/03/2020 18:23

Ok so my DP and I went out for a cautious walk. I don’t quite get the connection between keeping two metres away from other people as this doesn’t seem airborne and no one is out there openly coughing, at least. However we practiced this at all times and were dismayed to see very few others doing it. Plenty of people in groups who clearly didn’t live together taking up all the space and in their own worlds as usual. The cafe at Parliament Hill Fields was doing hot drinks and everyone was queuing close together, totally chocka. I would not be surprised if they shut all the London parks. It must be better to be outside than in with all those people but it’s clearly facilitating social mixing. It was much quieter in the side streets than the green ‘open’ space.

I might resort to cycling for fitness as think it would be easier to keep a distance.

screamer1 · 21/03/2020 18:30

Agree @TableNiner we came off our usual walk as soon as possible (it's along a disused rail track) because no one was adhering to distancing. It was freaking me out. People overtaking right next to us etc.

We came off as soon as possible and walked down the backstreets which were much more quiet and relaxing

HackAttack · 21/03/2020 18:37

This is probably a dumbass question but I can cycle to work right?

Figgygal · 21/03/2020 18:40

A dr on radio 5 live today was saying walking even 2m directly behind someone remains dangerous as you walking right through what they’ve breathed out.

Aramox · 21/03/2020 18:41

It is airborne! Why do people keep saying it’s not?

delilahbucket · 21/03/2020 18:45

DS's school was shut from Wednesday and I took him out for several walks where I knew we would be away from most people or be able to keep a distance. The looks we got from those we did see though. I think people probably thought we were supposed to be isolating as not many schools were shut at that point.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/03/2020 18:48

Why arent these dogs on leads?

I ran almost 10km this morning. I didn't even have a lead on me. Shock It's a woodland trail and you don't have to.

I think that as well as mental health, it's physical health. A country with fit, active people with good cardiovascular health and eating lots of fresh food is going to have a better survival rate than a locked-in, inactive country full of people eating tinned food and white rice.

Just stay the fuck a llama length away from each other. And stop touching things.

SilverOtter · 21/03/2020 18:51

@frillyfarmer tat is insane!Shock

I took the dog for a walk across fields earlier. It's a walk we have always done, and usually I may see one - perhaps two - other dog walkers. Today I saw three full family groups! I just made sure to give all of them a very, very wide berth.

georgialondon · 21/03/2020 18:51

I'm in central London but still taking mine out for fresh air. Just avoiding others

TruffleShuffles · 21/03/2020 18:52

It won’t be long till going outside unless necessary and individually is stopped. We have a large park near our village and I’d say that more people used it today than I’ve ever seen before. Very few people were sticking to social distancing.

Unfortunately a huge amount of the British public can’t be trusted to follow these guidelines, we need to quickly bring in stricter rules that are being policed as people are just not understanding the importance of the current guidelines.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 21/03/2020 18:52

We went for a walk along the beach today, it was cold and windy but so refreshing. DD has been finding the virus talk and school and activities closure stressful and has been quite tearful, she spent ages sat on the shingle digging out sea glass and shells and said it made her feel much more relaxed and could we go back everyday.

We saw about 15 people, running, walking their dogs etc but plenty of spaces to stay far apart. A woodland walk would be trickier because the pathways are narrower.

GivenchyDahhling · 21/03/2020 18:53

There are an awful lot of people on other threads judging those daring to dip a toe outside their front door who seem to know exactly how busy shops/shopping centres/town centres are.... I can only assume they all happen to live in the flat above Topshop 🙄

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 21/03/2020 18:57

Well most people seem to think you can't even get in your car and go for a drive and return home with no contact with anyone, so I'm not surprised people think you can't go out and walk. It's common sense really.

KaptenKrusty · 21/03/2020 19:14

If I couldn’t take a bike ride everyday I’d sink into a state of depression!

Amummyatlast · 21/03/2020 19:23

I went for a walk with DD today and surprised by the number of people walking in big groups. I couldn’t believe it when we overheard one large family group talking about having just taken their child to get their ears pierced.

TableNiner · 21/03/2020 19:48

On the news just now they were saying up to 40% of people carrying the virus are a symptomatic, which I’m not sure is out there enough

Dozer · 21/03/2020 20:04

“ this doesn’t seem airborne”

WTF?

GinnyStrupac · 21/03/2020 20:09

this doesn't seem airborne

Earth calling pp! Have you got the virus with a raging temperature making you delirious at the moment?!

screamer1 · 21/03/2020 21:38

I'm really freaked out now. Do you think there's a hg risk of walking past people less than 2 meters away for about 10 minutes. Feeling very worried.
