Are my village overreacting?

Small village - started an emergency group - they’re looking for wardens for each street to check each house daily for symptoms (by knocking on windows apparently), people with medical training eg CPR, doctors, nurses, farmers (for food), people who know how to fish, those who have been in the military before and people with skills such as joinery, electrics and firefighting .

They seem to believe that we will be entirely alone from now on, we have to assume there are no services left in society and no contact with other villages and towns - and that as a village we will eventually have to form our own separate civilisation .

These are actual words - that have been sent via social media to lots of us . A leaflet through the door last night saying much the same .

Same group have told us to avoid handling any mail, cardboard or paper from anywhere as it’s very dangerous, all animals, food that’s not been cooked to a certain temperature (so no bread, raw fruit or veg), water that isn’t sterilised or boiled and have told us that our pets and other animals are a danger to us all and should be actively avoided, confined to indoors and washed daily in water .

They’re asking for fire fighting stuff , overshoes, medical equipment, PPE, rubber gloves and rubber trousers, Wellington boots and tools for survival .

Apparently this is all just very good sense . It’s being actively shared amongst the 1000 or so of us who live here - many of whom are either very elderly or families with young children and very, very frightened as it is .

Would I be wrong to contact the group who are doing this and tell them to can it for a bit, or are they quite right? As far as I can tell there is no evidence for any of what they are saying . It sounds like something out of a post apocalyptic film !!

Where's this village OP? Confused

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 21/03/2020 12:22

Madness!

What are they going to do on these daily checks if they think one has symptoms, set you on fire?

SuckingDieselFella · 21/03/2020 12:23

@daisychain01

"People like you make me sick, you make unfounded accusations of scaremongering even if people share with others the steps they chose to take in a reasonable way. Because none of us know, even Public Health England, as they stated "no perceived risk" ie they've got not data to back it up so it could be a risk for a health category like cancer survivor (my DH), so it's hardly an excessive step to increase cleanliness."

People like you make me sick by suggesting you know better than Public Health England. Do whatever you like but don't try to make people frightened. For your information I have an increased risk but I'm not wiping mail.

YgritteSnow · 21/03/2020 12:28

Someone will be driving this. I'd be tempted to refer to him/her as "Negan" once you find out who.

nellodee · 21/03/2020 12:29

SuckingDieselFella, you have made the wrong call on these threads every step of the way.

Xenia · 21/03/2020 12:30

there are people like this around. I had a group text fora new residents' group which I feared might be like that so I just immediately opted out of the group. I don't want 100 emails a day about all kinds of matters when I am trying to work.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 21/03/2020 12:32

So they go from door to door and what happens if someone has symptoms.... March them away to an empty field, dig a grave and shoot them? Sounds very North Korea iny any case.

Thelnebriati · 21/03/2020 12:32

@AmelieTaylor @daisychain01.

Please don't use a 25% bleach solution, that far too strong. Learn how to use household chemicals safely. The safe strength is 5 tablespoons to one gallon of water

Ohh how I miss the village news Grin

Ours had an action plan post 9/11...

If anybody say a low plane flying over and felt is suspicious they should alert everybody they could and we would all congregate by the petrol station one mile outside of the village.

Somebody really hadn't thought that through.

EllaEllaE · 21/03/2020 12:42

This sounds a lot like someone has got lost down a youtube rabbit hole of crazy conspiracy theories... Watch out in case they start talking about arming themselves or setting up checkpoints to keep outsiders away.

TiddlestheCat · 21/03/2020 12:42

Well, this post has made me anxious. We have a pond full of goldfish in our front garden. I now need to remain vigilant and watch out for fishermen!

GirlCalledJames · 21/03/2020 12:44

Sounds dangerous, they are creating a lot of unnecessary extra contact between people. One of them could carry the virus around the whole village that way.

Ginnymweasley · 21/03/2020 12:59

I'm glad our village is just asking for help delivering food parcels to the elderly.
This is all giving me flashback of the time I had to bath the cat after she got paint on her. My arms have not been the same since.

JKScot4 · 21/03/2020 13:08

That is worrying, could lead to
abuse/neglect.
Can you contact your PCSO? I think this needs reeled in.

Ilovemypantry · 21/03/2020 16:01

Some of these replies have given me a much needed laugh 😂

Thinkingabout1t · 21/03/2020 16:25

Charlie, that is a seriously irresponsible bit of nonsense. People don’t need new excuses to neglect or harm animals.

Please report this to the RSPCA and any other local animal-care organisation which can spread the word. I’d also send it to your local newspaper, pointing out that you won’t catch a new virus from an animal unless you eat it.

1000 people is a huge village, I'm more used to there being about 70 people and the milkman is the parish clerk who's also a retained firefighter in the next village and does a bit of shepherding on the side. I bet this "village" has a school and a doctors as well as a shop and several pubs...

bengalcat · 21/03/2020 19:22

Re pets that is simply not true .

GrumpyHoonMain · 21/03/2020 19:25

In a small community that isn’t easily accessible by emergency services being self-sufficient is good practice.

daisychain01 · 21/03/2020 21:56

@TheInebriati, I just use a dash of Zaflora in some plain warm water, wet an ecloth then squeeze it out and wipe down anything like small boxes/plastic envelopes etc that are mailed through for DHs business. I always use rubber gloves.
