Are my village overreacting?

Small village - started an emergency group - they’re looking for wardens for each street to check each house daily for symptoms (by knocking on windows apparently), people with medical training eg CPR, doctors, nurses, farmers (for food), people who know how to fish, those who have been in the military before and people with skills such as joinery, electrics and firefighting .

They seem to believe that we will be entirely alone from now on, we have to assume there are no services left in society and no contact with other villages and towns - and that as a village we will eventually have to form our own separate civilisation .

These are actual words - that have been sent via social media to lots of us . A leaflet through the door last night saying much the same .

Same group have told us to avoid handling any mail, cardboard or paper from anywhere as it’s very dangerous, all animals, food that’s not been cooked to a certain temperature (so no bread, raw fruit or veg), water that isn’t sterilised or boiled and have told us that our pets and other animals are a danger to us all and should be actively avoided, confined to indoors and washed daily in water .

They’re asking for fire fighting stuff , overshoes, medical equipment, PPE, rubber gloves and rubber trousers, Wellington boots and tools for survival .

Apparently this is all just very good sense . It’s being actively shared amongst the 1000 or so of us who live here - many of whom are either very elderly or families with young children and very, very frightened as it is .

Would I be wrong to contact the group who are doing this and tell them to can it for a bit, or are they quite right? As far as I can tell there is no evidence for any of what they are saying . It sounds like something out of a post apocalyptic film !!

Good grief. I think someone has been watching too many zombie apocalypse films, you know the ones where the mysterious virus mutates ...............

Seriously, that is deep level crazy, if you know who is behind it I would certainly be social distancing myself from them. And trying to reassure vunerable people that what is suggested is not only unnecessary but possibly dangerous.

I still this its inbreeding Grin

slipperywhensparticus · 21/03/2020 10:07

With that level of batshit crazy I would be concerned they would try and kill you with fire should you show symptoms

Plus the animal thing WTF they disproved that already

LightAsTheBreeze · 21/03/2020 10:07

So are they catching fish to eat, those that know how to fish.

SuckingDieselFella · 21/03/2020 10:09

OP if there are only 1000 people in the village, why are they calling for doctors, medics, people who've been in the military, tradesmen, etc? In a village of that size everybody knows everything about everybody. There's no need to ask what people do for a living. And there are no farmers in villages. They live on farms outside the village.

This post is a wind-up.

shinynewapple2020 · 21/03/2020 10:13

Eyam in Derbyshire- there's something about this on BBC news - apparently the village historically beat the plague by self isolating- they are obviously trying to do the same with CV.

I bet the lead person is a MNer!

middleager · 21/03/2020 10:14

The reaction of my cats in water would be far more terrifying than any virus.

I imagine only a few of them are this hardline. Could you unsubscribe from the group for a bit?

They would still have a nearest village they are associated with i.e. where their kids go to school, they usually go for a drnk etc or are known of in general.

ProfYaffle · 21/03/2020 10:15

"Do you live in Eyam?" Grin

JoJothesquirrel · 21/03/2020 10:16

What are the rubber trousers for?

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 21/03/2020 10:16

I live in a village, and I’m starting to think we’re a bunch of reckless slackers as the best we’ve come up with is phoning the elderly, picking up prescriptions/shopping and walking dogs.

I’m going to step up our game and organise village-wide cat shampooing, classes in how best to nail up your letterbox, and all keen gardeners will be encouraged to dig their own well.

TheFaerieQueene · 21/03/2020 10:19

I think I’ll suggest to the residents in my village that each house should build ramparts and pour boiling oil in the hoards that are likely to invade at any moment. 🤣

Zilla1 · 21/03/2020 10:21

Have any of the male instigators of this madness ever alluded to being in the special forces/SAS when they weren't, OP?

Perhaps you could suggest they should wash the outside of every house and road daily with a pet-safe sterilising solution and every car driving in to the village should drive through some disinfectant tyre wash.

The leaders of this insanity should set an example by wearing respirators or gas masks and the village could not risk losing their leadership and vision.

charliesmithers · 21/03/2020 10:21

Definitely not a wind up ! I do know where doctors, nurses live largely - and teachers, etc - but I presume a lot don’t , it’s a very ‘keep to self’ area and if you don’t have kids in the school then there’s every chance you wouldn’t know everyone I guess .

I’m thinking it’s just as said, someone who’s gotten themselves very, very anxious and then tried to do something about it . Going all Lord of the Flies definitely isn’t the answer . I am considering leaving them a message saying it isn’t helping anyone right now, what would help is groceries etc . Our MP isn’t known for being the most helpful of them but will give him a shot !

We still have a GP surgery contactable by phone, we still have 999, we still have road access and phones etc, I genuinely can’t see any of that disappearing altogether - not yet anyway .

Next they will be painting red crosses on doors. This sounds batshit crazy and I would be a little afraid of my neighbours if I lived in your village. Might be time to move away Op.

Percypopper · 21/03/2020 10:21

If anyone renames themselves Lord Summerisle, run away
I thought exactly the same thing! GrinGrin

charliesmithers · 21/03/2020 10:22

The crosses were very unfortunately suggested yes. Or a poster saying - I have symptoms, do not enter . I’ve seen that on several groups though . No desire to do that purely because of historical significance !

OP posts:
YukoandHiro · 21/03/2020 10:23

Eyam did the opposite - it barracaded itself in and lots of the population died but it didn't spread to surrounding areas.

Kraejka · 21/03/2020 10:25

Absolutely ridiculous.
I'd contact the local council and report this. It could get completely out of control.
Then ignore - ignore people knocking on windows and all the rest of it.

Zilla1 · 21/03/2020 10:26

Gently ask them what their thoughts are about making their own pharmaceuticals and semi-conductors and diesel fuel to be more self-sufficient. If not, perhaps and armed raid on the nearest town or creating a traction village like Mortal Engines before the nearest hamlet does that to yours?

They are bonkers, OP.

Bimbleberries · 21/03/2020 10:27

I didn't think the active ingredients in Zoflora (or other 'antibacterial wipes/sprays') actually killed this virus anyway. I thought it had to be bleach based, or alcohol based, or something like that, not just this type of disinfectant.

Bimbleberries · 21/03/2020 10:28

that was in response to those saying they wipe down parcels and containers with Zoflora. I'm not sure what you could use the spray them with if you were worried, though. Maybe alcohol wipes?

midsomermurderess · 21/03/2020 10:30

Someone has been fantasising over The Day of The Triffids.

Mrsjayy · 21/03/2020 10:32

This sounds terrifying,it is panic and boredom driven contact your local council so they can put a stop to the madness! If some random knocked my window I would.not be best pleased
