Self catering holiday this week

Olsihabi · 21/03/2020 08:30

We were supposed to be going on a self- catering holiday today for a "big" birthday - just me, DP and the dog. We can't decide whether to go or not. Neither of us have any symptoms, have both been working at home all week (I work at home all the time anyway) and have not been mixing with other people.

Where we are going is pretty rural, we'd keep to ourselves and just go for walks at a remote beach. We have enough food to take to last the week and then won't have any reason to go to areas with lots of people. Is there any difference between doing all this at home and somewhere else? There hasn't been anyone staying in the cottage where we're going all this week, and the official word from the cottage company is that they are happy for people to continue with their holidays.

Do we go or stay at home? Confused

I’d go.

I’m aware there was the case in France where people contracted it from the person who had stayed in the ski lodge the week before so maybe take some cleaning products with you?

Olsihabi · 21/03/2020 08:35

We have half packed but are now sat here in bed drinking coffee, reading stuff in the news and don't know what to do or think. We are both fit and healthy, early 40s and have no dependents.

I wouldn’t, what if we end up in a lockdown situation? And too many people think that they are fine or wouldn’t cause a problem, or any other justification, and so ignore the advice to just stay at home. I can completely see why you think it’d be fine, but I don’t think it’s acceptable to go.

mysteryfairy · 21/03/2020 08:37

If any restrictions on movement are brought in at very short notice as in Italy are you happy not to be able to return home.

Are you happy to infect another community with, if rural, probably more elderly/vulnerable people and less infrastructure so less able to cope.

If you’re okay with these then you could go ahead.

Kintsugi16 · 21/03/2020 08:38

I would.

Keep a close eye on the news though. If we go to lockdown there will be a warning

Chemenger · 21/03/2020 08:39

How far is it? Could you head home at the first sign of a problem? Do you both drive, so that if one of you wakes up with a fever you can go home?

caulkheaded · 21/03/2020 08:40

In other much larger countries when the lockdown as announced people still drove home. As long as you’re prepared to do that then you’re fine.

Alez · 21/03/2020 08:41

We have a similar holiday planned in 2 weeks. I would go, clean the place thoroughly when you arrive and keep an eye on the news. They won't lockdown immediately if there is one - they'll give people some notice, and then you can come home early if need be.

Teddypops · 21/03/2020 08:43

Is it Cornwall? Is is somewhere rural where there are limited resources for the locals let some the holiday makers.

What part of non essential travel do you not understand!! FFS

Olsihabi · 21/03/2020 08:45

It's rural but close to lots of large towns, not Cornwall. We have all our food for the week, loo rolls, dog food, booze, full tank of petrol, medication just in case. Can't think of anything we'd need to buy.

OrangeSamphire · 21/03/2020 08:47

Don’t go. The government has asked everyone to stay at home.

Mamamia456 · 21/03/2020 08:52

Sorry OP this isn't just about you, it's about other people as well. It doesn't matter how healthy you are, other people are vulnerable. Please do the right thing and stay at home.

Kintsugi16 · 21/03/2020 08:55

In your situation, I can’t see what risk you’re presenting tbh.
I still have family not at home and relatives out of the country, due back next weekend.

Bumfuzzled · 21/03/2020 09:01

This pattern of behaviour is why the experts think Italy got so bad. People need to stay where they are and not move around unless it’s vital.

Please stay at home, otherwise you will be contributing to the problem.

wildthingsinthenight · 21/03/2020 09:02

No travel that is not essential. Please do not go

Conrad79 · 21/03/2020 09:03
Hmm

Stay HOME. What about that do you not understand?

These holiday destinations do not have enough hospitals to cope with tourists. Think about someone else for a change OP

DesLynamsMoustache · 21/03/2020 09:06

We did this last week but not sure we would have gone had it been this week. Things escalated so rapidly while we were away, and I'd be worried not so much about what is going on now but what's going to happen over the course of a week. As it was, we were glad to come back home yesterday.

CVRD · 21/03/2020 09:09

I woke up on Monday with a cough out of the blue and feeling a bit hot. I got much worse very quickly indeed. I now have pneumonia and may have to go in to hospital if I deteriorate (atm I haven't been tested for CV but the GP believes I have it). Earlier in the week I seriously feared I would stop breathing. Obviously my family have to stay indoors where we are for the next 14 days. (I have underlying health issues but we are all at risk of catching this and becoming very ill).

You're posting this on a Saturday morning. Last Saturday morning I felt absolutely fine. Look where my family and I are now.

What if you become ill on the last day of your holiday and have to stay isolated there for fourteen days, or are admitted to the local hospital.

You could go but it would be incredibly fucking stupid and irresponsible. Apart from the above risks you would be ignoring the non essential travel advice (I don't know why people find that simple concept hard to understand).

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 21/03/2020 09:10

Even if it isn't Cornwall other rural areas will also have limited NHS resources and they are struggling with food in the shops as well. Just stay at home and reduce everyone's risk.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 21/03/2020 09:12

I'm sorry to hear that @CVRD I really hope you feel better soon it is really scary not being able to breathe. Flowers

middleager · 21/03/2020 09:13

Please don't go. It's none essential travel.

What if your car breaks down, you have a bump/accident and require hospital?

SinglePringle · 21/03/2020 09:17

The message could not be clearer: STAY HOME.

You may not have symptoms but may still be a carrier

You may develop symptoms whilst you’re away and put others at risk

You will meet others - other people will be thinking the same as you. They may infect you. You’ll come home and - boom - you’re spreading it to your family or they to you.

Stay home.

Beniceandyoullbehappy · 21/03/2020 09:18

Please don't travel. It's non-essential. I know you've said it's not Cornwall but if it's rural I imagine somewhere similar. We have one hospital in Cornwall that is struggling. We cannot cope with visitors over Easter. Doctors, mp's and the community are begging people for once to not visit at this time. We have an ageing population and cannot risk the spread of the virus through people moving across the country. You may not be displaying any symptoms now but I don't think any of us can 100% say we don't have it. Hope you enjoy your time off whatever you decide to do Smile

BackyardChickens · 21/03/2020 09:19

We life in a hamlet in the middle of nowhere. Next to our cottage is a holiday cottage.

5 people arrived yesterday from god knows where carrying god knows what in their system. Extremely selfish.

MummyPop00 · 21/03/2020 09:19

IF you are taking all your own food, and are prepared to deep clean your accommodation on arrival (the owner may have been in), the car won’t need refilling with petrol, it’s not too far from home so as to drive back easily in short notice AND all your activities do not rely on getting close to the general public then yeah sure.
