Who knows what the next 12 weeks will bring? Surely making sure we’ve got the basics for beans on toast for DS is just providing for our nearest and dearest? I’ve only got one crate of food and one of non food put aside!

OP posts:
lilmishap · 20/03/2020 23:14

AARGHH I've only got six tins of beans, four toms, four passatta in the cupboard, bloody hell, quick to the car how many loo rolls do we have stored? I don't remember will we need ! more orange juice? oh god and TEABAGS COFFEE PASTA, AND CRISPS TWO NO FOUR TROLLEYS FULL OF ALL THE STUFF WE USUALLY EAT IN SIX MONTHS BUT ALL OF IT AT ONCE you know what let's do this online then we can fully stock up".

Soonest available food delivery from nearest supermarkets AND the town across are after Apr 10th instead of a couple of days and the stock issue is already forcing people to share their germs in multiple shops because they have to search for food, in some places there are no tins left and it's been that way for days.

You've picked the wrong topic to be blase about.

Ylvamoon · 20/03/2020 23:16

Yes it is bad! Think about the people who are at work all day and need to by some supplies after work, empty shelf= empty tummy= no energy= no nurse / doctor / home delivery for YOU!

bumblingbovine49 · 20/03/2020 23:17

"The thing about stockpiling is you should do it in times of plenty. It's too late now.*

Yes this. You can't stockpile in times.of crisis or shortage . That is panic buying. Stockpiling is buying a bit extra in times of.plenty to keep for emergencies and being willing to be ridiculed for.it.

It is not possible to.stockpile now, only panic buy. I do.however understand why people are doing it particularly if they don't want to have to go.food shopping multiple times a week

OrganzaLopez · 20/03/2020 23:18

Very selfish.

Mummoomoocow · 20/03/2020 23:36

This is a class issue. I cannot put into words how lost I feel amongst those with enough money to buy more than what they need. To buy 6 tins of the cheapest own brand beans. To prevent me feeding my family when I have no savings, no car, no travel money to get to big stores and even then no way of transporting this amount of food home. I am completely terrified that it won't be long before people like me have to cause trouble to prevent our children from going even further without

Aveisenim · 20/03/2020 23:39

I really hope this post is a fucking joke.

kittykat7210 · 20/03/2020 23:39

The thing is, there is no food shortage. There is simply not enough staff or delivery drivers to keep up with demand. Outside my local village supermarket there was 200+ people waiting for the store to open today, and 300 yesterday. I live in a village with around 7,000 people in it total including all children. There is no shortage, there is more food buying than when it’s Christmas, but shops haven’t had the warning to be able to bring the extra food in, and there aren’t enough delivery drivers to add extra deliveries. If no one was panic buying there would be plenty of food to go around.

Ihateselfishbastards · 20/03/2020 23:42

You trying to ease your conscience? Seeing the nurses struggle to buy food because selfish bastards have hoarded the food!

Pixxie7 · 20/03/2020 23:42

Providing people use their stock pile it should be ok going forward but not if it continues.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 20/03/2020 23:43

I kind of feel that people should have been more organised. I've been upping my shopping since around November to make sure I have an adequate stock.

I have a fair amount of toilet roll, tins, frozen etc. I'll rotate and continue to buy as I need.

FlushedZebra · 20/03/2020 23:47

It is when you see people struggling and all the shelves empty.

Just STOP IT.

QuixoticQuokka · 20/03/2020 23:52

Do people not use three tins of tomatoes a week on a regular basis? One spaghetti bolognese, one veggy chilli and one cooked breakfast at the weekend will do it. Yes, we use at least three a week for just two of us, and the same for tinned beans or chickpeas.

Crunchymum · 21/03/2020 00:02

This is very basic, but here is my take on it

prepping = gradually stocking up on essentials over a period of time
stockpiling = buying as much as you can all in one go (and 99% of what you buy you don't need at this moment in time)
panic buying = grabbing whatever is left after the locusts / stock pilers have descended

bemoreeverything · 21/03/2020 00:10

The shops are not going to close. The food chain is fine. The problem is you OP.

FlushedZebra · 21/03/2020 00:11

It would be criminal if a load of food ended up wasted, and chucked away, because of panic buying - when others have been left staring at empty shelves.

eaglejulesk · 21/03/2020 00:13

I'm in NZ and even our Prime Minister has asked people not to stockpile/panic buy. One of the supermarkets has now limited the amount of any one product you can buy, and has reduced its hours to give staff time to replenish the shelves. There is no shortage of anything, but people just can't seem to understand that and so they keep stripping the shelves.

lilmishap · 21/03/2020 00:13

@FlushedZebra I daren't look at that thread.

lilmishap · 21/03/2020 00:16

"I kind of feel that people should have been less poor more organised"

DrFoxtrot · 21/03/2020 00:19

Who even says 'nearest and dearest' in real life?Confused

HonestlyWillTheRsinEverStop · 21/03/2020 00:21

I’ve been to 6 supermarkets in 24 hours to buy bread.
Last night I made the choice to make sure my kids had sandwiches today so I’ve had nothing today. There was enough milk so they had breakfast today. I’ve not had anything. I’ve spent probably 2 hours & £5 of petrol looking for 1 loaf of bread.
This is my reality.

SnoozyLou · 21/03/2020 00:21

You can't even get bloody milk at the moment. Are these idiots freezing it, or is it all going to end up down the drain?

To everyone acting like a twat: I hope your freezer packs up.

alloutoffucks · 21/03/2020 00:21

I have been amazed at the quantities of food on MN some claim their family eat.

elc19 · 21/03/2020 00:23

I "stockpile" as a given. So when shampoo & conditioner/toothpaste/tins of tomatoes/toilet rolls/sanitary items/deodorant etc are on offer I buy a few and put some away for later use. This panic buying is just selfish.

bemoreeverything · 21/03/2020 00:26

DD managed to buy a chicken today. That's me sorted for meals for the next month good old Mumsnet chicken Grin

Ugzbugz · 21/03/2020 00:41

And we was worried about the current obesity Epidemic or the state of land fill.

Sheer greedy selfishness. The shelves are bare where I am just outside london, it is sickening.
