Why can people not follow the rules?

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/italy-coronavirus-death-toll-lockdown-uk-self-isolation-social-distancing-a9414581.html

Article about why Italys death toll continues to rise rapidly. Data finds that 40% of people are still leaving their homes.

I just don't understand why people can't follow the rules. Yea sure no one wants to isolate but surely for everyone you would do it?

I have a feeling the UK will go down the same path. Guidelines have been slack. They recommended pubs and clubs etc close. Alot stayed open and people continued going against advice. I really do not get why people don't care and are going against advice and guidance which is in our best interests?

The rules are actually quite tough and it's only this week they've moved on from fairly gentle "advice" to you need to do this. It will take people a bit of time to get their heads round it. Last weekend mass public events were taking place and although we were advised not to go to the pub, theybwere still open (whybif we couldn't use them?).
Today we can't go for a run in the park with a couple of friends unless they're from the same household.

The shops are still allowing crowds and many people still being "forced" to work in non essential jobs. So there are mixed messages.

Plus, I dont think keep repeating that, for most, this is a mild illness helps.

ginghamstarfish · 21/03/2020 12:48

Some people are acting as if it's the worst thing in the world, having to stay in their own home and look after their own children. There are a LOT of selfish and ignorant people out there, FFS.

Flaxmeadow · 21/03/2020 12:59

I think one factor is that people do not watch the news anymore. Especially young people. They see a meme or headline on social media but dont bother to read anything in depth.

DoubleAction · 21/03/2020 13:14

Yes, if you're one of the people who's been broadly carrying on as usual, still required to go to work and not checking MN news every 5.min, an awful lot has changed in the last couple of days.

Darkhan · 21/03/2020 13:20

And because no testing it is giving a false sense of safety. DH keeps saying that only 18 people in the county have it so low risk to go out blah blah ....
It's driving me mad

goldenorbspider · 21/03/2020 13:20

I never, ever, ever thought I'd say this and I'm shocked at myself - but I begin to see the point of authoritarian regimes.
It's awful.

^^ I agree there's to much opportunity for misinterpretation. Kids can play out with other kids but keep their distance. Wtf kids aren't going to follow that.

DoubleAction · 21/03/2020 13:26

I know golden but it's also slightly shocking that people are almost begging to have all their freedoms removed.

We know it's necessary, but what if it wasn't?

Randomschoolworker19 · 21/03/2020 13:31

@Ineedwine1

One works for a large bank and tried to argue they were currently working on a project for the NHS. They got shirty with me when I said they would need to provide the school with proof.

This is all redundant though because we know his wife is currently working from home. In fact, they are both currently working from home.

maudspellbody · 21/03/2020 13:31

I had an argument with a friend today.

He is a salesman. He has been told to stop doing customer visits in person and work on the phone from home.

He announced to me that he is planning to take this opportunity to go in to the office and conduct some training to the staff.

I said 'why? Have they asked you to?'

'No. I just want to be helpful'

'Well stay at home, then, as you have been told to do.'

'I'll be fine. I'm not worried about catching it'

'This isn't about you. You can give it to other people. Other staff might be expected to be in the office (although I think the company should be making them WFH too). You are not. So don't be a pillock and STAY AT HOME. You are hardly a paramedic. You are not a vital service.'

He looked like Shock

I think he was expecting me to be impressed by his work ethic.

Ineedwine1 · 21/03/2020 14:55

@randomschoolworker19 so they basically just wanted to get rid of their kids to have a break.
I don't think the government are doing enough to emphasize how serious this all is. Maybe if people knew then they wouldn't be so casual about it all.
I also don't think people realise it's going to change our whole world for a considerable amount of time. I think people think everything will go back to normal

There’s just not enough deaths yet, once people they know start dying then things will change.

Ineedwine1 · 21/03/2020 15:11

@fallfallfall that's very true. I don't think it seems real to people yet.

OP posts:
Randomschoolworker19 · 21/03/2020 15:18

@Ineedwine1

I don't know what else they could do.

People have seen what has happened in China, Italy and Spain.

The government have repeatedly told people to social distance as much as possible and that those who are especially vulnerable should be self isolating, yet we hear of people still going out and meeting up with people.

It's the entitled me-my-I arrogant attitude that seems to be so prevelant in British society. Most countries seem to hate us and you only have to see Brits abroad to understand why. It's embarrassing at times.

It's not hard to understand.

STAY THE FUCK HOME UNLESS:

YOU'RE GOING TO WORK.
YOU'RE GOING TO SCHOOL BECAUSE YOUR PARENTS ARE KEY WORKERS AND THERE ARE NO OTHER CHILDCARE OPTIONS.
YOU'RE GETTING FOOD.
YOU'RE GETTING MEDICINE.
YOU NEED URGENT MEDICAL ATTENTION.

EVERYTHING ELSE AND YOU'RE PUTTING PEOPLE AT RISK.

PeterWeg · 21/03/2020 15:22

" DH keeps saying that only 18 people in the county have it so low risk to go out blah blah ...."
More like 200,000 people infected today, doubling every 3-4 days

moochpooch · 21/03/2020 15:32

There’s just not enough deaths yet, once people they know start dying then things will change.

This is the truth. It's human nature & a lot of countries are seeing similar.

moochpooch · 21/03/2020 15:35

I know golden but it's also slightly shocking that people are almost begging to have all their freedoms removed.

This has surprised me too. Do we really want to be more like China?

Inkpaperstars · 21/03/2020 15:36

They should have ordered pubs etc to close immediately...why have one last night?

Ineedwine1 · 21/03/2020 15:37

@randomschoolworker19 I know my eyes have been opened wide to this British attitude. Its almost like we are better than those countries so we will be fine. The ignorance and arrogance is crazy

OP posts:
Inkpaperstars · 21/03/2020 15:41

I think people who want more restrictions are actually trying to preserve their freedom, the freedom to be able to live without such a high threat of severe Illness being spread to them, freedom to access medical care if they need it. We shouldn't need any freedoms taken away because we should all be able to understand and comply voluntarily and fhe govt support should be in place to enable that. Those who are going about being free and easy now, and the govt failing to put in place the right support, are the ones who are going to necessitate actual restrictions on movement.

BitchHazel · 21/03/2020 15:45

It comes down to one of two things

  1. Selfishness
  2. Stupidity

People are not living in a bubble, there is no-one who is not aware of the situation and the advice they should be following.

moochpooch · 21/03/2020 15:48

It would be great money maker if they did start fining people!

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 21/03/2020 15:50

Boris's language is far too vague. Lots of 'if possible,' 'as much as possible,' 'avoid.'

Makes me so angry every time I hear him.

NaturalBornWoman · 21/03/2020 15:52

They should have ordered pubs etc to close immediately...why have one last night? he said close tonight as soon as practicable, so why didn’t they do that? As soon as the words left his lips my neighbours shot out of their house and hot footed it down the pub as fast as their chubby little legs would carry them. They are arseholes, but the pub should have been shutting up when they got there, not preparing for a last ditch lock in.

Drivemybluecar · 21/03/2020 15:56

Seen some people on Instagram going to the garden centre and having a coffee. I had just listened to the LBC interview with the icu doctor and has cried listening to him.
When called out the people ( influencers) said there was nothing wrong with them going out.

Loly365 · 21/03/2020 16:02

Let's be honest...we all know that to stop people going out Government has to put more strict rules with fines for those who are not taking it seriously and being selfish. All day today young people coming with flowers and chocolate to visit mums in my neighbourhood. I know it's hard not to see your loved ones, it breaks my hard I can't visit them . There is a petition for Lockdown on UK Parliament website. Around 295 000 already sign. Maybe we need more ....
