What are people thinking so far?

OP posts:
LouQoo · 20/03/2020 18:37

As someone who was made redundant last week, I don’t think there is anything for me in there either. Speaking as someone who has been PAYE for 17 years, so have paid into the system.

Elizadoeslittle19 · 20/03/2020 18:38

@StillDisappointed my DP in exactly the same position... I'm devastated and cannot believe the unfairness. We probably wont even qualify as i am PAYE...

BumpkinSpiceBatty · 20/03/2020 18:39

Childminder here, been forced to close my business and with no financial support. I'm screwed.

Greenpop21 · 20/03/2020 18:40

I was impressed.Worried about how the country can afford it .

HolidayLetter · 20/03/2020 18:41

Some of you need to grow up

I hope you are not directing that at me, @Iveneverwonanoscar

If so, it's very distressing that you would say that to someone who is desperate. Please give people a break who aren't covered by this (generous) governmental aid.

LoudBatPerson · 20/03/2020 18:42

Disclaimer - I do not in any way think the measures for the self-employed go far enough! More does need to be done for them and I feel for everyone who is losing income at the moment

However, I would like to say that the 80% of salary is not for all PAYE workers. Only those whose companies cannot give them work and will be laying them off. The 80% is being paid to keep the employees on a retainer, if the company decides to do that rather than just get rid of them.

If your company lets you go despite these grants, PAYE workers will get the standard unemployment benefits.

BovaryX · 20/03/2020 18:42

I am a permanent resident here, but not (yet) a citizen or a person with Indefinite Leave to Remain. I am on a spouse visa and such I am not entitled to any benefits at all

How many countries on the planet in this global pandemic are going to A) pay 80 per cent of their citizens' wages and B) pay 80 percent wages to someone who is not a citizen and has no right to benefits?

Forza14 · 20/03/2020 18:42

Being protected from eviction is actually a bigger deal than some people realise.

If you can’t pay your rent through no fault of your own then no judge in the world will agree to evict you (and it’s up to them, not the landlord).

Boris specified “no fault evictions” because rent arrears evictions are already discretionary. In theory, a landlord COULD simply evict you on no fault grounds and, usually, the judge has no discretion and has to award possession. This has been suspended for at least 3 months. This protects all tenants.

StillDisappointed · 20/03/2020 18:45

@Emmmie He hasn't even helped out the self-employed citizens of Britain.

He's not going to bail out those who're not.

Sunshinedaffodil · 20/03/2020 18:46

I think it’s really generous. I’ve not of them other governments doing this. I think they are trying their best in a terrible situation.

lemonsandlimes123 · 20/03/2020 18:46

@stilldisappointed tell him to get in touch with local authorities they are looking for drivers in their droves for all sorts of roles.

Forza14 · 20/03/2020 18:46

Childminder here, been forced to close my business and with no financial support. I'm screwed

Why are you screwed?

You can take a mortgage holiday. You can claim UC for yourself and any dependants, which is enough to eat, keep the utilities on and pay for internet/phone.

It’s not ideal but this is about trying to keep people alive.

Uppingham · 20/03/2020 18:46

The welfare state is there to help in times of crisis. The chancellor has increased the offering way beyond what anyone would have thought and still people are not happy. Those SE complaining please explain with the relevant calculations what you would do in the shoes of the chancellor? Not moaning I want money but genuine worked example of how you would have allocated the funds in the circumstances to be equitable to employed, self employed and those on UC already whilst also funding the NHS and delaying VAT and SE tax payments?

Sherloidbaisherloid · 20/03/2020 18:47

I work in a non essential retail store. If they remain open but don’t have the hours to give me to work as is so quiet will they be able to claim the 80% for me? Or is it only for employees who’s work have had to close?

Forza14 · 20/03/2020 18:48

Being able to keep everyone fed, with a roof over their heads and (hopefully) a job to return to in a few months is a major achievement for any government. And people are still moaning.

GabsAlot · 20/03/2020 18:48

I likke him my husband has tgo work regardless but i th8ink the package is fair just a shame a lod of people had already been laid off

LouQoo · 20/03/2020 18:50

@Forza14

Some of us have already been made redundant, so your statement doesn’t apply to us.

Powergower · 20/03/2020 18:50

For anyone already laid off, it can be backdated to 1 March. As long as your employer is ok with taking you back on first presumably.

StillDisappointed · 20/03/2020 18:51

@Elizadoeslittle19 It's despicable. As if those who're self-employed don't deserve the same treatment as those who work for someone else.
£1600 a month - I can't believe anyone thought this was okay.

Thinking about it, it's still the government bailing out big businesses. They've come out of this better than anyone else.
The rest of us can just go and fuck themselves I guess.

'We're all in this together' my arse. Rishi's little speech about how will all need to help each other out; whilst shafting a whole group of the UK. Angry

I'm sorry you're in this position too. I hope you find a way over it.

Forza14 · 20/03/2020 18:51

Just to add, the 80% for PAYE is not because those workers are valued more but it’s to try and ensure we don’t have 20m unemployed people in a few months. It’s all about encouraging employers to retain workers and not just sack them.

What would you uninsured self-employed people have done if you’d been struck down by illness if this is such a disaster? Did you have a plan? Insurance?

StillDisappointed · 20/03/2020 18:53

@lemonsandlimes123 He's already looking but we don't think it's likely that they'll take on a nearly 60 year old man with 2 illnesses.

TabbyStar · 20/03/2020 18:53

As a SE person, universal credit wouldn't even cover my business costs, accountancy, subscriptions, insurance, ICT costs, software etc. that I doubt I could get out of and there's no business help for people without premises. I'm actually okay for the moment but lots of people in my position aren't.

Forza14 · 20/03/2020 18:53

It does, Lou. It’s been backdated for that very reason.

LoudBatPerson · 20/03/2020 18:54

I work in a non essential retail store. If they remain open but don’t have the hours to give me to work as is so quiet will they be able to claim the 80% for me? Or is it only for employees who’s work have had to close?

The details have not come out yet, however, in the next couple of days details are expected to clarify how this applies to 0-hour contracts and what type of leave companies will have to put you on to access the grants are expected in the next couple of days.

If you qualify your company will have the front the costs for now while the scheme sets up (possibly until the end of April). This may put a lot fo companies off taking it up if cashflow is tight.

GabsAlot · 20/03/2020 18:55

supermarkets want to recuit 25000 if anyone looking for temp work
