Milkman

Our Milkman has become so overwhelmed with new customers they aren’t accepting any more.

But will these customers still carry on paying 81p per bottle delivered when the crisis is over. Or are they simply a nuisance jamming up the system for faithful regulars.

Exactly, its funny how the last few months farmers have been the bad guys etc. Yet it times of need the demand has never been higher.

Once this is all over, hopefully people remember this.

LazyFace · 20/03/2020 08:11

Surely regular orders have priority.

treedragon · 20/03/2020 08:26

It's the same with our local green grocer and bakers shop too! They are experiencing an upsurge. I bet they get deserted for Tesco et al when it's all over.

OP posts:
treedragon · 20/03/2020 08:26

But I can tell you our green grocers and butchers is looking after their "regulars"

OP posts:
namemypuppyplz · 20/03/2020 08:29

Are people still a nuisance if the reason they're looking for deliveries is that they're vulnerable?

treedragon · 20/03/2020 08:29

@lazyface

no regular customers are caught up in Milk and More's chaos from carpet bagging panic buyers.

littlejalapeno · 20/03/2020 08:33

Is 81p unusually high for delivery? It’s £1.02 a bottle by us on the service I signed up for yesterday. I wish we could afford it in normal times, well done for you that you can OP. I don’t really get the point of your post? Glad your butcher is looking after you, it must be a great comfort to know you are so special and get the best treatment when other people are worrying about feeding their kids... did you mean it to come off that way?

treedragon · 20/03/2020 08:35

@littlejalapeno

No - but what I mean is people don't bother with the local suppliers in the main. But now times are hard they are reduced to doing so.

Personally I would like to see this turn things around. People abandon tesco et al for the faithful local suppliers. I think I am too hopeful.

OP posts:
NuclearWinter · 20/03/2020 08:39

What this is going to highlight is how vulnerable globalisation can make your supply chains in times like these.

I agree - I really hope out of the back of this more people are prepared to support our own farmers and food producers, even if it means having a little less and paying a little more (for those that can - I understand that for some us that just isn't an option).

KillingMeSlowly · 20/03/2020 08:41

People aren't "abandoning" Tesco and the like. Tesco have fuck all in you can buy. Can't get any click and collect slots. Or any delivery slots.

So people like me have no other choice except to go to the small independent shops. Which are a lot more expensive. And hard work to go to several shops just to get what you need

I can't afford To do it. But I can't afford to not feed my toddler and I either

But I'm so happy your butchers, bakers etc are looking after you so well and prioritising you.

Well done 👍

treedragon · 20/03/2020 08:43

@NuclearWinter

This is what I mean. We don't ned the likes of Tesco and all that - we never had them years ago. People went to the grocers, the green grocers, the bakers and butchers.

They were all well known people in the area. Are the Supermarkets really such great value?

My local green grocer is selling 25kg of local potatoes in a giant sack for £7.50. So that is 30p per KG.

I usually can't afford the milkman \ butchers\grocers.
I still cant, I'm going into debt every week to feed my children.I
Don't need a stranger sneering at me on the internet aswell, already feel shit thanks

treedragon · 20/03/2020 08:44

@KillingMeSlowly

Not sure what local palces you have around but both the green grocers and butchers here delivers. A fruit and veg crate made up and delivered!

5zeds · 20/03/2020 08:46

Well they’re turning away NEW customers so I’m not sure what your problem is. I usually pay 90p at my local refill shop but can’t get to the shops any more. Supermarkets have saved our bacon so far, BUT I’m looking forward to my small footprint life as soon as it’s practical.

Peasfox · 20/03/2020 08:48

My milkman will be getting a nice tip from us when this is all over and it’s safer to handle money again. What a godsend he’s been.

littlejalapeno · 20/03/2020 08:48

I think this is self-congratulation, masked as concern for “our farmers”

A lot of UK farmers supply the big supermarkets. But unfortunately they cannot supply a strawberry in November so we import from countries that do. Is that really so bad?

Though I bet you’re the kind of person who would t eat a strawberry in November because they “don’t have the flavour of proper british summer strawberries”Hmm

People around here are complaining that local suppliers have increased their prices in response to the desperation. Now I like local and would buy more from them if I could afford it, but that does not inspire loyalty.

Falangalangadingdang · 20/03/2020 08:50

I've used the milkman for a long time but I'm hoping that new customers get to realise what a fantastic service they're going be having with milk delivered to their front door and keep using it.

ferretface · 20/03/2020 08:50

Our milk and more doesn't seem disrupted really - website has been a bit wobbly but the regular milk continues to arrive as normal.

MedusasButterDish · 20/03/2020 08:58

My milkman is keeping up and is a star.

daisypond · 20/03/2020 09:01

Most people can’t afford milkmen and independent grocers and butchers in normal times- that’s why they don’t use them, So again, it’s the rich who win out and think they have done so through their own moral superiority.

I'm on benefits, when I am well enough I use the local butcher and green grocer, they are no more expensive than the supermarket and the quality is better.

I don't often buy milk but when I do I have it delivered.

treedragon · 20/03/2020 09:12

@daisypond

How did people afford the independent stores before the mass supermarkets came along. My mum can remember the time before the Supermarkets.

Many didn’t I suspect. Either way a straw an argument. That was then and this is now. You have to
Move with the times.

My mum can remember the time before the Supermarkets.

Yes... many older people can, she is not unique in that. It was a time when people had to shop daily and queue for ages to be served. Most women’s and some men’s time was spent getting groceries and then cooking. Supermarkets have saved time to allow shopping once a week, emancipating women and making a daily chore a weekly one. What’s not to like?

My mum can remember when you couldn’t get garlic in the supermarket or small shops. I’m so happy I live now and not back in those times.

sashh · 20/03/2020 12:48

In the days before supermarkets few people had cars, or fridges and certainly no freezer.

You would know your local shop keepers by name and often you could get things on 'tick'.

My local butcher does a Christmas club, people pay money each week towards their Christmas meat order, things like that were common.

MedusasButterDish · 20/03/2020 13:42

It's not necessarily even a question of moral superiority. You can look at it as an extra charge for convenience, in the same way that milk costs more in a corner shop or other convenience store. With a milkman, the milk is delivered long before you could get to a shop in the morning, or get a supermarket delivery, and when you're out of bread for breakfast and/ or apples for school, it's a relief to be able to have those in time for the morning.
