Are you being careful with how much you eat?

I find I am already 'rationing' in my head - one less slice of bread, no bag of crisps (children might want them), using that manky old pepper instead of chucking it etc.

Kids and DH still feasting and while I want to keep things looking normal for DC, I can't help but mentally prep for what lies ahead.

I'm also saving 'treats' for when I might appreciate them more. By treats I mean normal eggs for the kids (we have six eggs) rather than biscuits etc.

Is anybody else doing this? Perhaps you've been doing it for days/weeks.

I can eat quite frugally (Veggie) but the other 3 are in for quite a shock.

DH is still rolling his eyes at my warnings about how bad it could get, so eats with no such thoughts.

Yes but only because we're now likely to be stuck in Aus til end of May and are going to be totally broke! I see a long future ahead of cheap campsites and noodles Sad

@middleager

Yes & no.

I’m diabetic & eat low (very low) carb to control it. I also have high blood pressure.

I am terrified of catching this and the NHS not being able to help me due to shortages of ventilators

So I have been trying to get my blood sugar levels under control but actually I feel too scared & anxious to eat anything much. I wish it would result in weight loss, but it won’t 🙄🤷🏻‍♀️

Not deliberately rationing ‘food’ but definitely being careful with the things I cannot replace & need to maintain low carb. (Can’t currently get some staples such as cauldron sausages & marinated tofu pieces) - and British veg

I’m barely eating as it’s making me feel very snxios

Yes I feel this has highlighted how wasteful we are as a family.

Usually go through tons of toilet roll and baby wipes for toddlers, half reusable wipes but still the washing was huge...now one roll is lasting for days. Managed to keep a pack of wipes going for ages too. Same with food and washing. Bit of porridge on that top...fine until it smells/looks awful now. Previously would have been straight in the wash.

I think I'm forever going to have a small long life/tinned stash on rotation after all of this.

Raindogsoup · 20/03/2020 09:39

Yes I'm being careful to use up anything that might be going off, making a lot of soup. Also measuring pasta and rice portions and having a bit less than normal e.g. for rice we normally do 65g pp down to 50g pp.

We try not to food waste anyway, and we aren't a household of snackers, so not really changed much. Went to the market this morning and there was an abundance of fruit and veg, meat, fish and baked goods. Got my weeks shopping and then attempted a supermarket for a handful of "cupboard" supplies. Couldn't get most of it. We've lots of everything else and I always have a stock of pasta/rice etc, so we'll be ok. More of an annoyance than anything else.

LolaSmiles · 20/03/2020 13:13

We normally eat in date order, judge for ourselves whether most food is fine to eat (rather than throwing based on use buy dates for underripe fruit), make more and freeze a portion, have leftover meals (eg bubble and squeak).

At the moment we're having to think a little more about buying foods that are versatile rather than food that would normally go for one meal only.

Fidgety31 · 20/03/2020 13:18

I always watch how much we eat anyway as I grew up In poverty and it’s ingrained in me not to waste !
Also I don’t earn enough to be frivolous

People are stashing in garages? Wow, just wow

I saw this on aa thread on this forum a couple of days ago.

Admit it's second-hand news, as I'm not on FB. (I have my standards )

We are being very careful, smaller portions etc. Nothing is going to waste. Heading for some imaginative menu combos pretty soon.

😂 great to see some have total faith in the government and what they have been told re no food shortages, I can’t say I feel the same.

"great to see some have total faith in the government and what they have been told re no food shortages, I can’t say I feel the same"
This . There are definitely some shortages in parts of Italy at least ( bread and yeast according to my niece who lives there) but nothing like here since the first few days after the first towns were locked down

Slurpy · 20/03/2020 14:40

Yes! Trying no to waste anything, making sure the kids finish their proper food and rationing out biscuits.

Hopped on the scales this morning, and I've lost 5 pounds. My normal response to stress/upset/fear is comfort eating. I'm glad to have a reason to curb it.

Yes this for us too. But we are really making quite an effort.
