Are you being careful with how much you eat?

I find I am already 'rationing' in my head - one less slice of bread, no bag of crisps (children might want them), using that manky old pepper instead of chucking it etc.

Kids and DH still feasting and while I want to keep things looking normal for DC, I can't help but mentally prep for what lies ahead.

I'm also saving 'treats' for when I might appreciate them more. By treats I mean normal eggs for the kids (we have six eggs) rather than biscuits etc.

Is anybody else doing this? Perhaps you've been doing it for days/weeks.

I can eat quite frugally (Veggie) but the other 3 are in for quite a shock.

DH is still rolling his eyes at my warnings about how bad it could get, so eats with no such thoughts.

Your DH is greedy and irresponsible. I’d be furious if mine was “feasting” under the current circumstances. We’ve stopped eating biscuits to save them for DC, eating anything left on DC plate instead of chucking it, putting DDog leftover food in the fridge for tomorrow, etc.

StormyClouds · 19/03/2020 20:50

There is absolutely no reason to reduce food intake. The government and supermarkets have been clear that there are no food shortages and will not be any.

Frenchw1fe · 19/03/2020 20:50

I had bought lots of dried fruit to make my dd’s wedding cake but as her wedding will probably be cancelled I might make a few tea breads or fruit cakes and perhaps some hot x buns.

I saw this thread title and assumed it was something totally different. I’m the opposite, stuck inside all day and so tempted to nibble nonstop, I’m being careful to avoid putting on too much weight. I trust the big agribusinesses and shipping and food companies are fine and no shortages save for the man made ones

niffynoonoo · 19/03/2020 20:53

mmm teabread!

PandaBabies · 19/03/2020 20:56

I’ve been a lot better about using odds and ends. It’s a good habit, I’m going to try and keep the same habits when this thing blows over.

OldLace · 19/03/2020 20:57

My two aren't particularly 'fussy' but they are Autistic so used to certain meals on certain days - it's the RULES!
Monday is always Tuna Pasta Day. Soup is Saturday Lunchtime Only.
Monday we had 'leftovers soup' for dinner (chicken noodle soup with all the Sunday roast leftovers bunged in so extra chicken, stuffing, carrots, sprouts and roast potatoes roughly chopped). they were a bit stunned, but ate it as I told them 'that was what needed eating as my freezer is full and I' m not wasting it'.
(I dangled cheese and crackers afterwards on the sofa whilst watching Pirates of the Caribbean ;).

icanhearapindrop · 19/03/2020 20:58

Yes, massively! Didn’t eat lunch today, and had the kids leftovers from dinner. DH and I are going to share a pizza tonight, when we would always usually have one each. Nearly cried earlier when I found ham in the fridge with mould on it. It was well in date too! We are trying to limit the kids slightly, and DH has been very good questioning what they can have with me (I am a SAHM who does all the shopping)

WitsEnding · 19/03/2020 21:02

Checked all dates to avoid wastage, and had a think about portion size. If I can't exercise properly I don't need to eat so much, but it takes a considered approach to adjust my intake.

Whenwillthisbeover · 19/03/2020 21:03

I don’t like waste at the best of times But now I eat everything. Didn’t even throw the few limp rocket leaves. Put them in my sandwich, has to be a good thing.

LightenUpSummer · 19/03/2020 21:06

What's the actual, objective risk of food shortages though?

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 19/03/2020 21:09

Yep, my dc’s usually just help themselves to what they fancy. I’ve told them today they need to ask permission first. They eat far too many snacks anyway!

roarfeckingroar · 19/03/2020 21:12

Yes but because I'm not exercising as much.

PorpentinaScamander · 19/03/2020 21:12

I have very little food waste anyway but ds1 is rationing the biscuits.

He's operating a strict 2 each policy Grin

viccat · 19/03/2020 21:12

Not as such but food feels more valuable when it’s been hard to get in the first place. Using every bit of a loaf of bread and freezing a few slices for a rainy day too, and things like that.

littlejalapeno · 19/03/2020 21:13

This is stupid and feeding scaremongering.

If people followed the rules instead of sending five members of their family to get round the two per person rule, then there would be no supply issues.

People need to calm the fuck down and stop fueling panic buying.

You need enough to get through your two weeks quarantine, other wise carry on as usual.

Wineislifex · 19/03/2020 21:13

Absolutely not, the stress is making us eat more, McDonald’s, takeaway and the Easter eggs are getting now 🤣

DitheringDoris · 19/03/2020 21:14

Since the weekend I haven’t had much of an appetite and have been picking at things I shouldn’t, probably some sort of comfort eating despite not being hungry.

Strange question but has anybody been having more dreams than usual, I’ve had 2 absolute corkers (nightmares) and I’m not somebody who usually remembers their dreams.

WhiteCat1704 · 19/03/2020 21:15

I was but then got a text from dominos about no contact deliveries...ordered a pizza and now feeling confident we won't starve and don't need to ration :)

reluctantbrit · 19/03/2020 21:18

We are more careful that we use what’s there instead of just saying “we buy what we fancy”. But portions are only smaller because we will be less active, I loose some walking to and from station so no more sweet after lunch snack for example.

But I am still sure that food will be available in normal amounts, maybe not what you planned to get but still plenty.

Whenwillthisbeover · 19/03/2020 21:19

Agreed no food shortages, just panic buyers. DH is a senior operations director in transport. Today, yes just today, they had 170 loads of food and supplies OVER the amount of trucks available to transport them (usually 1000 plays).

Tomorrow will be the same. And Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday....
STOP the fuck buying in bulk.

Whenwillthisbeover · 19/03/2020 21:21

*plus not plays

MauriceandAlec · 19/03/2020 21:21

No more than usual but have been aiming for little to no waste for some time now.

Koalaing · 19/03/2020 21:21

We do not have a shortage of food, we have an excess of greed. Things will be okay.

katseyes7 · 19/03/2020 21:22

Yes, l am. l'm 'rationing' my chocolate stash as well, just in case.
l've found l'm actually eating better, though, regular 'meals' (even if it's a sandwich) rather than just grazing and eating too much through the day.
