Council workers came in person and said they have to close.

:(

Under whose direction?

LovingLola · 19/03/2020 17:14

Good.
Hopefully the message is getting across to people.

TooManySocks · 19/03/2020 17:14

It could be that particular local council have decided to enforce a closure, rather than a national lockdown.

Nomorewine77 · 19/03/2020 17:15

That's interesting, literally just had word from colleague that library ( my place of work ) is closing from tomorrow.
Council in South West

vikkimoog · 19/03/2020 17:15

i assume the council.
They were council workers.
whether it's an individual decision by this council I don't know

I’ve just driven past an empty starbucks that is always packed and a mcdonalds drive through which only had a few cars waiting.
The roads were insane though

ShanghaiDiva · 19/03/2020 17:25

Yes, this needs to happen.
I was in the town today and Costa was packed. If people do not have the sense to stay at home, everything that is not essential will need to close.

vikkimoog · 19/03/2020 17:26

well, Bozza just said nothing is ruled out re. closure of pubs/ bars etc

I doubt if they have the legal power to do that>

DGRossetti · 19/03/2020 17:31

I doubt if they have the legal power to do that

Isn't that in the "special powers" bill just passed ?

LastTrainEast · 19/03/2020 17:35

They should be closed, but I didn't know that councils were closing privately owned businesses. I'd ask if they left any paperwork. Some kind of official notice.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 19/03/2020 17:38

I was in the works today and the cashier said that all non essential shops were closing today.

blubellsarebells · 19/03/2020 17:43

Boris has not said anything about closures.
I wish he had.

LastTrainEast · 19/03/2020 17:46

"The Prime Minister's official spokesman did not rule out using a new law, which will be presented to Parliament this lunchtime, being used to forcibly shut restaurants, bars or some shops."

That was only 5 hours ago and would be the PM's decision not a local council. If they were genuine then they would have left some kind of notice signed by councillors.

LINABE · 19/03/2020 17:46

I'm sorry for her but good. It needs to happen everywhere. I cant believe what I'm hearing on these threads about the elderly going for Coffee, doing a bit of Shopping etc. etc. It is NOT sinking in. We are in for hell on earth if this continues much longer, We really are.

DDayDoris · 19/03/2020 17:48

I wish they'd close all the pubs. My DS is trying to go to the pub tomorrow night. He's just 18, and I'm so, sad, for him - this should be a rite of passage for him - he's had so much taken away from him by this bloody virus - his A levels, his leavers day at school, prom etc. But he can't go.

Devlesko · 19/03/2020 17:55

It's down to councils, our market is the same. Stall holders are day by day, until told otherwise. They told me the council have said they'll let them know.

LittleLittleLittle · 19/03/2020 17:57

I heard an environmental health officer on the radio earlier. She said food inspections of eating places e.g. cafes, restaurants, pubs have now stopped.

When they were doing them they found some places didn't have cleaning supplies as they couldn't get them.

Not saying your friend doesn't have cleaning supplies but I understand why they are telling her to close.

covetingthepreciousthings · 19/03/2020 17:58

I was in the works today and the cashier said that all non essential shops were closing today.

Who have they got that from though? I work in a shop and as far as we know it's business as usual, non essential shop.

Lovemusic33 · 19/03/2020 18:01

I think unless places have outside seating they will be asked to close, most have closed anyway.

SorryDidISayThatOutLoud · 19/03/2020 18:01

I think places should be closing. Exceptions being key workers. More people doing online deliveries etc.

People want instructions, they want to be told what to do. If they are given options, they think it's not that urgent.

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 19/03/2020 18:03

People want instructions, they want to be told what to do. If they are given options, they think it's not that urgent.

Yes. We need some proper leadership.

ratspeaker · 19/03/2020 18:04

Round here non essential shops are putting a lot of stuff online.
Cafes are removing seating and offering takeaway service instead.
Some are offering delivery

But I've not heard of any being told to close

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 19/03/2020 18:05

Quite a few cafes around me (Dublin) are doing deliver to car. You phone in the order and drive to the cafe and they bring it out to your car. You either pay over the phone or use contactless, not cash.

Shinesweetfreedom · 19/03/2020 18:06

Good.
The message is not getting through.
As has been mentioned on here several times the elderly are going about business as usual, coffee shopping etc.The young too, thinking they are invincible
