Free school meals families

Fraggle45 · 19/03/2020 11:58

Has anyone had any guidelines about the vouchers mentioned yesterday?

We have 2 children who receive the pupil premium for free school meals but haven't heard anything

We did remove them from school on Monday so haven't been able to pop in to the office and ask

I work in a school too. @march20 you have no idea what you're talking about. Some families live in the most unimaginable chaos and squalor. SS only have time to deal with the most serious cases. Normal day you'd give your child breakfast? Normal for you maybe. Angry

Year6teacher754 · 13/04/2020 10:10

@March20 sorry to be rude but yes I do know what I'm talking about.

March20 · 13/04/2020 10:21

@OzzieOz the way you put it. Most parents give their kids breakfast what are you talking about? Yes they will be some cases that are not like this I never stated other wise. If you read my original post I did say say I can understand in some cases! I’ve personal witnessed “people taking advantage” like my neighbours taking FULL advantage. Both stay at home parents, 3 children, in their 20s and they drive a car go on holiday ECT... I also have a friend who told me she’s glad she’s on benefits as she knows where the money is coming from..... just because some may not agree and are getting uptight about my view it is true!!

Year6teacher754 · 13/04/2020 10:23

@OzzieOz
Oh sorry, please ignore my last post. I've just seen your post again and realised that you wasn't saying that I "had no idea what I was talking about".
My apologises.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/04/2020 10:26

@March20 just admit you resent people who are on benefits. That's really what your post is about, isn't it?

For your information I am a single parent earning 3p above minimum wage. I am on a low income, what is classed as "working poor". I'm on furlough at the moment so I'm losing 20% of my income. It's a struggle right now.

I don't get free school meals for DS because I have a job. I certainly do not resent those people that are getting them. If you think life on benefits is so great then quit your job. Then you'll have nothing to be envious about.

March20 · 13/04/2020 10:34

@Waxonwaxoff0 that is not what I said. I’m a single parent too working 13hr nights shifts with the existing problem going on right now. I also work part time due to lack of childcare.
I can completely relate to your situation.

I’m not going to lie there’s a difference between getting some government help and doing your best and someone doing NOTHING at all as in not even attempting some not all.

My post has clearly rattled you. I will not be quitting my job thank you I’ve worked san hard to get where I am since my child was 12 months old from having drama with my ex to over childcare to having to go on sick.

Think before you make assumptions just because something taste bitter to you it may not be for all..

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/04/2020 10:37

@March20 the irony of you telling me to think before you make assumptions when you've come on a thread to tell people that they're taking advantage and they shouldn't be getting FSM vouchers.

If you're not in the situation then mind your own business. It's not hard, is it?

March20 · 13/04/2020 10:40

@Waxonwaxoff0 there is many times when I thought I want to give my job up as it’s been a slog!! But I want my child to go to classes, travel and know that his mother gave him good work ethic. It is not just about the money it’s the principle.

I don’t begrudge anybody I just don’t agree that there’s a lot of ungrateful people on here moaning that a food voucher is not enough. Most people won’t get free school meals after year 2 if they go to work unfortunately!

The absolute cheek of you.

March20 · 13/04/2020 10:44

I’m not in that situation as I’m CHOOSING to go to work! @Waxonwaxoff0

I actually didn’t say that they shouldn’t be getting. Get your facts right!

I said they weren’t grateful and my point was that £12.50 can be useful as part of a weekly shop!!!!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/04/2020 10:45

@March20 and you don't know their situations, do you? I want the same things for my child which is why I work. But maybe some of the patents on here CAN'T work because they are disabled, or maybe their children are disabled and they are surviving on the absolute pittance that is carer's allowance. Maybe they would love to give their children those experiences that you have mentioned but they can't. You don't know how much they rely on FSM.

You're the one with the cheek assuming you know the circumstances of everyone on this thread when you don't.

Year6teacher754 · 13/04/2020 10:48

@waxonwaxoff0 very well said. I completely agree and as working in a school ,I have seen this and would agree with everything that you have said from personal experience.

March20 · 13/04/2020 10:53

I never assumed anything. I did state so RE read my post that I can understand if they had a disabled child ect!! I obviously did not say everybody.

I can only base it on my own personal observation!!

But I don’t know why your pretending as though there’s not people who CAN go to work but are not! The examples I gave you were based on people I know personally.....

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/04/2020 11:04

I've read your original post. You're questioning why people here need the vouchers and you literally said the only people who should get them are disabled children.

I'm not pretending there are people that can work but don't. But it doesn't affect my life, so it doesn't bother me.

Free school meals are there to help disadvantaged children, not the parents. I don't waste my time moaning about people who don't work, because I don't care.

March20 · 13/04/2020 11:14

No you clearly have not. I didn’t question I said that £12.50 is sufficient towards a food shop per child. I obviously can’t list all EG but I was stating I can understand the elderly or if someone had a disabled child ect. That is what I actually said.

My point was I couldn’t understand that some people that expect it ALL.

I did NOT state that the ONLY children who should get FSM need to be disabled at any point.

Year6teacher754 · 13/04/2020 11:15

@march20 but some parents do need it all!!

March20 · 13/04/2020 11:17

Yes SOME I never said that Nobody was in need at all!!!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/04/2020 11:19

A lot of people on here aren't even getting £12.50 though. And I don't know about you but I've been spending way more than an extra £12.50 a week on food while we've been home.

March20 · 13/04/2020 11:50

To be honest I can’t say that I spend that much extra on food. Before you jumped down my throat. I’ve actually probably saved due to being at home a lot more. We are not a huge family so yes I can see it would all add up for a bigger family. My child usually gets fsm as he’s reception but I don’t get a voucher either. I honestly can say I’ve not had to buy extra food just the normal food shop! Usually I always go to Morrison's but started shopping in Aldi and you get much more for less money.

BertNErnie · 14/04/2020 19:17

@March20 you are assuming those children who are fed at school have a substantial dinner at home in the evening - I know MANY children who has their main meal at school each day and go home and are offered something small.

Whilst I agree there may be families who don't need the voucher, I'm happy they are available as some people are really struggling to feed their families right now.

March20 · 14/04/2020 19:30

@BertNErnie agreed I’m sure there is and people with safeguarding issues ECT.

Fantasiaa · 14/04/2020 19:36

Honestly there is no point arguing with people who want to make sweeping generalisations about entire groups of people. The need for FSM has been documented and researched into countless of times.

JuneJuly · 15/04/2020 20:51

@March20, just FYI the abbreviation for 'et cetera' is 'etc'.

March20 · 15/04/2020 21:15

@Junejuly bore off. I’m entitled to MY opinion. I’m not going to change it. Like I have stated! And for your info when exams are being marked your spelling doesn’t have to be perfect just as long as the examiner can deem it to be readable you would get the mark.

We are not in a 3rd world Country where children are literally starving and have no food or money. In my posts I stated some not all. I’m not forcing anybody to agree that’s life get over it sweetie.

Shitfuckoh · 15/04/2020 22:18

@March20

As a single mother to 3 children, one of which is in receipt of DLA. I'm on benefits (Carers allowance and since becoming a single parent, Universal credit).
I didn't hear anything about the free school meals & I think it's because I haven't filled in any pupil premium forms. That's neither here nor there though as I do not need the vouchers.
Only 1 of my children actually had school lunch anyway, the oldest one took lunch box in to school due to his food aversions. The other is a toddler.

I do agree with you, there are some parents who do take advantage & who do take what is offered, not because they need it but because they 'can'. That does not mean that all people do.

March20 · 16/04/2020 01:01

I’ve clearly rattled a few cages. Especially teachers on here you would think they were social workers. I know not all I never stated other wise of course not your right @Shitfuckoh. I think some may have exaggerated their point you can get a loaf of bread for 50p a block of cheese & so on. A £12.50/£20 on top of your USUAL shopping should be sufficient unless some of you are shopping in Harrods.

I’ve had times when I haven’t worked & I've survived. We are not in a 3rd where Country where we are living in severe poverty clearly some people have not witnessed this it’s absolutely heartbreaking. I’m not that shallow to believe “all” of course not you are totally right.
