Why do teachers still have jobs?

StrangeTimes · 19/03/2020 08:06

So my husband has just lost his job from next week. He's a coach driver. My best mate has lost her job from this week, she used to work in a cinema. I have many friends now out of work and desperately trying to get jobs in supermarkets.

However teachers will not be working now for many months, so how come they're not being made redundant?

I'm not being goady I genuinely want to know. I'm glad they are still being paid, I'd hate for them to be in our position. But why?

Are other jobs "safe" like this too?

I see your point.

I only did when the response to being challenged was "typical MN" followed by angry claims that people don't value "menial jobs" because sadly that sort of response often happens in the regular goady teacher threads.
It does no good to get into troll hunting, but I do think it's fair to flag if a new poster has posted quite a goady thread, especially given the current situation across the country with parents already under pressure.

It gets on my nerves when people just post ‘reported.’ Makes me think of the tell tales in school who tell the teacher ‘he called me this, she said that..’

How else do MNers know someone objects? I put my name to my objections to this GF's post.

@echt You could of just said you didn’t t agree because ... (the reason you don’t agree) and left it there. Or you could of just not write anything and repeated it silently. I just don’t get the need to just literally put ‘reported.’ when you don’t agree with something someone’s says but when they haven’t actually broken any rules.

I think delivery drivers are in quite high demand already and that might be a stop gap. so important that they are considered key workers and their children will be able to go into school. All the supermarkets are advertising at the moment.

@diddl a bus driver isn’t comparable to a teacher. It just isn’t.

I’m not disparaging OP’s husband. I’m not saying it’s no big deal that he lost his job.

But it’s just not comparable.

Blimey. I've hidden the Coronavirus and AIBU topics as many of the threads are so unpleasant and then I stumble across this.

OP you can't really be serious? Are you really that unpleasant?

Haven't read the full thread, sorry.

It's about making public statement instead of secretly reporting.
And don't call me @echt, I'm echt.

Lol, a week of home schooling with show people just how valuable teachers are to society. That's without the observations, written lesson plans, IEPs, 30+ children requiring differentiation oh and no parents judging you for everything that you do! Grin

"a bus driver isn’t comparable to a teacher. It just isn’t."

Well yes, I know what you mean.

But when schools return & the kids can't get in because the bus drivers have been sacked??

It just seems so short sighted.

Haven't rtft but....

I'm a pregnant teacher, sent home and still working every day (I'm actually only PT).

The expectation is we still work. I've already seen so many helpful teachers post on Social Media ideas for home schooling for parents, putting work together for students to complete at home and doing online lessons.

Imagine if we just 'stopped working' and took all our resources down and let parents just get on with it. Do you even know where you'd start?!

Did you not watch the news last night where the education secretary thanked us? Fucking hell.
Teacher here. I will be working from home. I will be looking after my own kids. My DH works for the NHS. Not frontline staff but needs to go in.
I will also be going in to look after key workers’ children. Some of whom will be highly likely to get the virus from their medical staff parents and pass it on to me. And my family.
And, do you know what, I’m happy to do it.
But no, we’re just a bunch of slackers popping champagne bottles right now.

FWIW I'm a teacher at an FE college and we have been told nothing yet. Updates today. But we are still working. Some of us harder than ever with staff absence and covering classes. Lots going on with on line learning.

The cost of making teachers redundant would exceed the time they will probably not be working.

I am a small employer. I have done the sums today. If I terminate myself (no redundancy due) then I can keep my employees on for 5 months. The cost of redundancy would be about 4 months salary. If I need to terminate them after 5 months the business will be insolvent. Don't have business premises and so no help from the government it seems. We do work on government and public sector contracts but they have been stopped from Friday (well all planned work has been cancelled)

I am keeping them on but I have no idea what I will do- signing on for JSA on money. £73 a week, SSP is slightly more but not ill.

But I do think they don't realise what is normal for many other workers including skilled workers.

I, like many other teachers, came to teaching later and worked in other areas before schools. Don't make generalisations based on some Internet forum.

Why is it just teachers who "don't realise"? Why not any other public sector professions?

Teachers often argue on these boards because so many people seem to think we have no idea about normal life. We don't think we're special, we're don't think we'r work harder than anyone else. But we'r do think we're treated to respect as any other worker, especially when we're working even harder than usual

So many people have no idea what teachers actually do, yet feel they can comment. ecial, we don't think we work hardest than

I'm a retired teacher with a teacher DD. My brother is a bus driver who is also going to lose his job because his company's contracts are entirely with schools and universities. It's such a shame for him. Fortunately he's a lovely guy who doesn't resent others.

My daughter is working frantically to get things sorted. She will still be going in, teaching the children she has (in a special school) AND preparing things for the children who will be at home. This is going to be really hard.

@SallyLovesCheese I am commenting on the basis of some of the comments here. I understand that teachers will be working. But people saying teachers would need to be made redundant and rerecruited are wrong. Lots of industries put people on short time working - low pay, then when work starts up again you go back to normal. It is a retainer.
So yes if you don't know about that, you don't understand what happens in many industries.

You're making generalisations based on a few forum posts. Then saying "teachers don't realise". Why not say some teachers, or "For those of you who haven't worked in other industries..." or "Many people, not just teachers, who haven't worked in other areas don't realise that..."?
