Why do teachers still have jobs?

StrangeTimes · 19/03/2020 08:06

So my husband has just lost his job from next week. He's a coach driver. My best mate has lost her job from this week, she used to work in a cinema. I have many friends now out of work and desperately trying to get jobs in supermarkets.

However teachers will not be working now for many months, so how come they're not being made redundant?

I'm not being goady I genuinely want to know. I'm glad they are still being paid, I'd hate for them to be in our position. But why?

Are other jobs "safe" like this too?

DD's teacher will be available via e mail if we need her. They will be working with the key worker children.

Resentment everywhere

I'm not sure we will be all happy clappy and grateful at the end of this, l think we will be more divided than ever.

historygeek · 21/03/2020 18:46

*angel I'm not in a position to really make a judgement on the decisions social services make. If a disclosure is made to us, we report it to the appropriate channels. However, we know we have kids that the only hot meal of the day they have is their free school meal, that come into school dirty and unwashed with unexplained bruises. I would much rather they were in school and safe, then in that environment unchecked for 12 weeks or however long this will go on for.

angell84 · 21/03/2020 18:57

@historygeek can i ask one more question because I am interested.

I am in Ireland right now, but I think that I will be working in the UK next year, in an area relevant to this.

How do you know which children are vulnerable? Do social services send schools a list and say that these children qualify for one hot meal a day?

Ken1976 · 21/03/2020 19:04

A teacher friend has said that her school has to be available to take key worker's children every day from 8am till 5.30 pm . They also have to remain open during the Easter holidays. They also have lots of organising to catch up on within the school
So no , she won't be sat at home twiddling her thumbs .

anxietygirl76 · 21/03/2020 19:45

Oh fuck off. Teachers are in minding the kids of keyworkers, and the kids , for who the news of school closures was not good news. those kids with a shitty home life, whose clothes don't get washed, who don't get fed and who get abuse in many forms
Meanwhile still setting work for the kids who are at home, whilst probably minding their own, and for the time they are in the school building opening themselves up to the risk of catching it. So yes , fuck off and fuck off some more

BelleharePenguin09 · 21/03/2020 22:00

Well said.

rainbowlou · 21/03/2020 22:01

We are still at work??

CalleighDoodle · 21/03/2020 22:09

Fucking lazy teachers. Having holiday cancelled. Teaching remotely at the same time as childminding key workers children, some of whom have a sahp i shit you not. Marking work emailed in while doing enrichment activities with the 1000 key worker children in the closed but not closed school. Stolen pension. Lack of funding. Buying equipment for use in their jobs because no fucker else will. Stagnant pay.

I know, why dont we all open our windows at 8pm on Thursday and loudly boo?

Ladyglitterfairydust · 21/03/2020 22:09

I’m part time and don’t work Fridays but this week I responded to 55 emails from pupils about work. I can assure you OP I am very much still at work! I still have to go into school some days even throughout the Easter holidays. I may also be required to work weekends. My dh is a deputy head and is also absolutely still very much at work. Our own children will still have to attend nursery/school for at least part of the week. we have to set work, mark work too etc and all of this has to be made from scratch because our current resources/assessments are not suitable for home learning. Then on top of that we’ve got the whole GCSE fiasco to deal with. I’m very sorry that people have lost their jobs and are not being paid, but you need to piss off with your bloody goady post.

Tescodelivery · 22/03/2020 09:55

Every time this thread pops up when I'm scrolling it pisses me off.

You have no F'ing idea OP have you?

I'm not going to bother to explain because if a person is dense enough to start this kind of thread, they will undoubtedly fail to grasp what is actually happening to schools at the moment even if it explained to them.

Ladyglitterfairydust · 22/03/2020 11:09

@Tescodelivery I know exactly what you mean. I can usually let the numerous teacher bashing threads go over my head, but this one has really given me the rage.

Areallthenamestaken · 22/03/2020 12:41

We got an email saying we'll all be redeployed around the borough on a rota to ensure there's enough staffing. So on top of doing all the planning and paperwork we're expected to do for our own students, staff are expected to go to different schools with unfamiliar children to care for them. It's WORSE than if schools just stayed open because at least we know our own students and class teams.

LemonGingerCakes · 22/03/2020 12:48

Are you an academy @Areallthenamestaken?

It shouldn’t be allowed.

ittooshallpass · 22/03/2020 12:49

Sorry this a rubbish screen shot, but does this answer your question?

Why do teachers still have jobs?
PurpleFlower1983 · 22/03/2020 12:51

Jesus Christ we are still working!! That’s why we are getting paid. Love a teacher basher in these shit times.

noblegiraffe · 22/03/2020 12:54

I know, why dont we all open our windows at 8pm on Thursday and loudly boo?

This, at least, made me laugh.

As for Y12s not having been set any work yet, I’m sure this vital weekend before 6 months off is what would have made all the difference. Hmm They’ll be set work. Have some patience.

trinity0097 · 22/03/2020 13:02

We will be delivering online lessons and also caring for key worker children. I'm in school now organising things. (on my lunch break!)

We have some families with both parents GPs, and one who is even doing the testing for Coronavirus.

Also if I continue to get paid, then I can pay my rent, continue to support local businesses to keep other people in jobs.

Tescodelivery · 22/03/2020 13:36

I'm in school now organising things. (on my lunch break!)

Where are you? It's Sunday!

Bluejuicyapple · 22/03/2020 13:46

I’m the first to Roll my eyes at the Teaching is the hardest job in the world crew but on this occasion of course they’re being paid, a) they are working and b) it’s not like their jobs won’t be coming back . Last thing we need is to recruit. Gazillion teachers for their own jobs

notchickenagain · 22/03/2020 15:06

I'm surprised that no one on here has blamed a teacher for rearing bats in Wuhan. Although early days...

1forsorrow · 22/03/2020 15:08

Your husband has a valuable skill, so they don't need him to drive coaches at the moment so how about he applies to be a delivery driver for a supermarket. Desperately needed at the moment.

Areallthenamestaken · 22/03/2020 20:28

@LemonGingerCakes

Yes, academy SEN in south London. Our school is closed because the majority of pupils are too vulnerable health-wise to come in. It's on a volunteer basis for now and they are risk assessing to ensure vulnerable staff don't do it.

StormyClouds · 31/03/2020 00:06

It seems to me that most teachers have basically sent home a few worksheets and downed tools until September.

My DS1 is at uni and his lecturers have been running online seminars with reading lists etc provided. DS2 is in Year 10 and has had nothing for most subjects.

To be frank, I don't know why teachers still have jobs if they're just going to be sitting on their arses for 5 months. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect some form of skype/facetime style lessons.

  1. All teachers to be furloughed until September on 80% pay. Taxpayers' money should not be used to fund people who are choosing not to work to sit on their arses.
  1. A national immersive online educational environment to be created- this would be a mix of recorded and live lessons taught by private tutors and teachers from overseas, as well as games, e-textbooks and other materials.
  1. Teaching unions being put on notice that if this scheme works, there will be far less need for teachers in future and concomitant reductions in staff will follow. I suspect this is the real reason why the unions are so reluctant to facilitate online teaching!
MyOtherProfile · 31/03/2020 00:10

O there you go with yoir funny little joke agaim huh @stormyclouds ? Nobody agreed with you on the other thread and i dont suppose they will here.
