Because you are killing the elderly and vulnerable. Stop it!

My friend out shopping for his elderly neighbour last night could not find the basics to buy him!

I think with school/work closures, people realised they'd been buying less than they needed.

No one is being killed you twit.

nomdefuckit · 19/03/2020 07:45

Agreed, Casino

It's vile

LefttoherownDevizes · 19/03/2020 07:49

I stocked up on my last shop just in case. Now DH and DD ill so all in lockdown, no delivery slots available at all and I can't drive so even if I could get out I can't get to a supermarket (and one of the DC's is high risk).

So, if you'd saw my shop last week you may say I was stockpiling (only 1 pack of loo rolls, was a big but not silly shop). Now I'm incredibly grateful that I can feed my family for the next fortnight without risking anyone by leaving the house.

slartibarti · 19/03/2020 07:50

My 94 year grandmother got a bit carried away with her online shopping and bought too many frozen ready meals. Luckily neighbour had some freezer space.

neversleepagain · 19/03/2020 07:54

I stupidly trusted people would stop being greedy and me and my family are paying the price now. I can't find a single pack of meat apart from bacon, we have no rice, a small pack of pasta and a few tins of food. I was truly panicked last night after having to visit 3 supermarkets to get not even 20% of what we need.

DesLynamsMoustache · 19/03/2020 07:54

Yes but we did it about a month ago to avoid the current situation, and I'm bloody glad we did.

Fedupandpoor · 19/03/2020 07:58

Those struggling to find food, please check out your local ethnic markets. Most still have something in and they are usually small businesses that could do with the help 🙂

CountFosco · 19/03/2020 08:07

Yes but we did it about a month ago to avoid the current situation, and I'm bloody glad we did.

This, did a big shop over a month ago so we were prepared for self isolating and since then have just done a normal weekly shop. The people who are panic buying now are all the Neros who spend their time criticizing the preppers saying it was just the flu and there was nothing to worry about.

EssentialHummus · 19/03/2020 08:09

We did, months ago. Now buying normal sized shops, and buying for neighbours who need online.

ofwarren · 19/03/2020 08:11

Did a big shop first week in Feb, to add to my preps that I already had.
Just been doing my normal weekly shop by supermarket delivery.
Not bought toilet roll, hand gel, soap or pasta at all since January.

Ozziewozzie · 19/03/2020 08:11

@Fedupandpoor Thank you, that’s great advice. Smile

Butternutbrownie · 19/03/2020 08:12

Yes I am one of those people and unashamed of it.

Mainly because I built my stock up over years and did the last big 'top up' in early January, so I haven't contributed to a single bare shelf.

It's those who suddenly realised they were heading up shit creek without a paddle, or boat, that are to blame.

Clymene · 19/03/2020 08:14

My local shops were all well stocked yesterday - the butcher, the greengrocer, the small supermarket.

The people hoarding are doing so by car and trolley. If you shop somewhere where walking is involved and the ability to carry what you need home, you'll find far fewer greedy fuckers

WhatdoImean · 19/03/2020 08:16

Same as some others - did it slowly over the past 6 months (started as a Brexit stockpile, decided that it made sense to have a good supply of long-term stuff in (loo rolls, pasta, tinned stuff)).

As such, no impact on the current people panic buying. I suspect that there is a certain smugness from those who DID prep for this, despite being laughed at, at the time - understandably so, I guess, but hopefully those who did prep are putting less of a load on the supply chain now, so I can forgive them that.

Mind you - as mentioned, I started as a Brexit prepper.... nothing so far has made me decide that after this is all over, that I will not be doing the same again pre Brexit. This is bad enough as is... with BoJo not committing to slowing down/delaying Brexit, it is likely to get far worse in the medium to long term IF he goes through with it.

Finfintytint · 19/03/2020 08:22

I’ve kept a stock at home to last two or three months for quite a while now. We’re used to snow and flooding and it’s a natural habit.
I’ve only bought fresh fruit and veg in the last week or so and have had no need to buy anything else really.

Casino218 · 19/03/2020 08:23

@Unshriven yes well this twit may be saving your life in a few weeks. I'm a nurse that can't find basic bloody food supplies.

Please start a petition to the Governmen to introduce rationining. It's needed

dottiedodah · 19/03/2020 08:23

Went to Supermarket yesterday .About midday as had the Vet in the morning .Sainsburys pretty bare TBH .Went to large store nearby .Lots of meat and fresh veg there .Havent been "panic buying" just got normal food for the week and some painkillers too .Was behind a chap last week who had £350.00 of shopping ! (dont have that much in cash!) No matter what we do we cant stop people from buying insane amounts like this . I did buy some loo rolls and tins /packets but nothing like that amount !

Grumpbum123 · 19/03/2020 08:24

I haven’t but my H has and I’m quite frankly embarrassed by him

Kmx123 · 19/03/2020 08:28

chillandrelax · 19/03/2020 08:30

I've not anyone who has said that they have panic bought but the shelves are empty?

blackcat86 · 19/03/2020 08:31

I have a confession - I have a cupboard full of loo roll. I do so because we have a working parent household with a young toddler, getting up at 5am everyday so use Amazon subscribe and save. When I saw the scenes coming out of china I thought 'you know what, it wont go off will it so I'll get it this month instead of next'. When I saw what was happening in italy I realised that was a very good choice so I put more nappies in my next two shops with water and juice etc. I have PND and PNA following a birth trauma where DD nearly died due to hospital neglect and I was left bleeding post c section without my newborn for a day crying by myself. I have no faith in the system and am unashamed about preparing. Suddenly the idea that you may have more than 1 bottle of calpol in has become socially unacceptable but im unashamed. We kept telling 70+yrs in laws to prepare which they ignored. They still think they're off on a cruise next month. I understand that some people particularly very vulnerable elderly genuinely cant afford to prep much and I fear for the deaths of vulnerable groups or those living in abusive and DV situations. People should have been preparing long before this but maybe it's the luxury of not being in a vulnerable group (now self isolating household) or still having that lovely faith in the system. After this week we have no online shopping slots for 3 weeks so you bet I'm stocking up if i can.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 19/03/2020 08:31

I slowly built up a stock last year as I was worried about a no-deal Brexit. I had planned to donate some of it to the foodbank

However, when Covid 19 reared its head I kept the stock "just in case" and am really glad I did. We have enough to see us through if necessary for a couple of weeks and I havent had to panic/bulk buy anything. So my forward planning is helping the situation.

I do think rationing needs to be brought in though. Its appalling that peopl are unable to buy basics.

Ariela · 19/03/2020 08:34

Frankly I wish someone would come on air and just say to the public that we have enough loo rolls and food for everyone. Please look at your stockpile and consider a) will it keep for 3 weeks - if not consider donating some to those that don't have it and b) if you have 3 weeks worth of stock just stop shopping for more because there are less fortunate people who have not been able to shop for their needs. I was pretty shocked to go into a supermarket and see not a scrap of fresh food - veg or meat - by 5pm . No tinned stuff either.

Off to find some loo roll (must be quilted as she can't handle cheap stuff as easily) for my elderly 94 year old that I shop for, who is in a wheelchair and pretty frail.

stuckinthemiddlewithtwats · 19/03/2020 08:35

@neversleepagain we did the same. Assumed people were decent and we were wrong. My DP got one tin of baby milk a while back as there were only a few left, haven't seen any since and I can't produce any milk myself.

We've been in hospital for weeks with our newborn and have empty cupboards with no way of getting any necessities. Where we are there's no fresh food, no meat, no toilet rolls, no nappies/any other baby necessities, no tinned foods (except sweet corn which I hate), most frozen food is gone too (just ice creams and puddings left), no pasta/rice. Not exactly sure what we're supposed to live on. Plus our baby is underweight already so the lack of baby milk is a serious problem.
