Because you are killing the elderly and vulnerable. Stop it!

My friend out shopping for his elderly neighbour last night could not find the basics to buy him!

But everyone on MN is a prepper not a panic buyer!

TBF MN has always had a reputation for crazy, weirdo preppers. There was a section for us loooong ago because we asked for it. Long before Brexit prepping even. Then no deal Brexit came along and we were less niche. Now this.

I am hoping that people learn a little about sensible, light, general prepping. So that there is LESS panic buying and more prepping.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 19/03/2020 13:42

The thing is, no one is going to come on here and go "yep that's me". Everybody will have a 'reason' why they specifically needed to buy more than usual.

I don't believe anyone tbh. If I went by mumsnet then i would believe that everybody was just doing normal shopping. Clearly they're/we're not.

tallah · 19/03/2020 13:43

I wish people would stop going on about this

alloutoffucks · 19/03/2020 13:44

I initially bought enough so we could self isolate for 2 weeks if we needed to. I usually only have enough food in the house for about 4 days. Then when we were told people with certain conditions would have to self isolate for 12 weeks, I started buying far more. Because 4 of us would be at home. I don't have the money or space to buy for 12 weeks., but I have bought more than I need because of that.
I did book an online shop, but I couldn't get a delivery slot until a month away. So I have went from 4 days food in the house for 4, to a month's food supply.

So yes I can be accused of panic buying, but I think it was rational as without that supermarket delivery I did not know how we were supposed to get food.

AlphaJura · 19/03/2020 13:45

Yes but did it over a month ago, not all at the same and from a few different retailers. Didn't buy 'more than we need' because it's being used now. I'm barely going to the shops. Nothing will be wasted. I'm glad we did because we are not out there now competing with others for supplies.

VivaLeBeaver · 19/03/2020 13:45

I am well stocked up but have been for weeks. I got quite a bit of stuff last August worrying about Brexit. Mainly loo roll.

Then in mid/late Jan saw what was happening and thought this could get shit if it spreads. Got quite a lot of tinned food, pasta, etc. DH thought I was bonkers. I told everyone to stock up, people didn't listen.

So yes, I've got enough stuff to last a month or more. But I haven't panic bought anything this week or last week. I still can't find bread or milk though! However I have got yeast, bread flour, some UHT milk.

Daphine2004 · 19/03/2020 13:47

We’ve been using our Brexit stash and I had been buying extra each week just in case, so not had to do anything major this time.

OccasionalNachos · 19/03/2020 13:48

Round our way supermarkets are fairly empty but small local shops are doing fine. If you’re able to (& yes, pay slightly higher prices), this is the way forward.

alloutoffucks · 19/03/2020 13:50

Small local shops are just as stripped bare as supermarkets where I live. And yes I have had to pay more.

housepicturesqueclub · 19/03/2020 13:53

The only thing I bought extra of was rice, just in case things did get really bad at some point, like a real food supply shortage.

coronamoana · 19/03/2020 13:56

I've just wanted some apples & mushrooms!

Zenithbear · 19/03/2020 14:06

I keep my freezer full because I batch cook. So have only bought the same amount. Except we had to buy bread and milk for a single neighbour who works 12 hr shifts and was going without both as no shops open when he goes to work and nothing left when he got back. So not just old and vulnerable being affected. Some people really have to stock up for more than a week /10 days. Other people that don't are just being really selfish.

Sidge · 19/03/2020 14:14

@Lauracrazygirl yup.

Three full meals a day aren’t essential, even when pregnant. You could potentially have brunch such as eggs, avocado, toast, tomatoes, and then dinner, with regular snacks of fruit, cheese, crackers etc. It’s about maintaining a steady nutritional state, not having three square meals a day.

Give the way things are going it probably makes sense to “ration” slightly, for all of us. Make supplies last, make soup instead of buying tins etc. Stop overeating, stop the expectation that we all need three squares a day especially if we’re sat on our arses at home and not working.

(I’m talking generally here not at you personally Laura!)

GameSetMatch · 19/03/2020 14:16

28 pampers size 6 nappies £8, there’s no way I can afford that and I’m not on the breadline what do people with smaller incomes do? I’m so annoyed at people stocking up on nappies.

An old man in the queue infront of us was refused three tins of soup, he was so vulnerable I think cashiers should use a bit of common sense. Luckily a nice man bought him his extra tin of soup.

midwestspring · 19/03/2020 14:16

One issue is that we need more food in our house.
Dc are at home all day, as is DH.
Restaurants have closed.
So I am visiting the shops more.
I am also moving from a just in time larder and fridge to a two week one.
We don't have crazy amounts of anything but we have bought more.

sqirrelfriends · 19/03/2020 14:19

I'm so glad I prepared, shops round here are empty and no delivery slots. My friend with twin babies can't find formula anywhere - meanwhile people have bought it up for their tea. Mental.

I'm so glad I stocked up after Christmas, we will manage till our delivery in April, just.

Pickles89 · 19/03/2020 14:20

I didn't stockpile anything. I've been ill for a week and my family are showing symptoms now. There are no delivery slots available and I can't think of anyone we could ask to go get stuff for us. I am kicking myself for not being better prepared.

SidsWife · 19/03/2020 14:33

I’ve had no choice but to do bigger shops because there’s no food being left and we’ve been in isolation now for a week and still have another week to go.

FlorencesHunger · 19/03/2020 14:37

Not stockpiled a single thing, over few weeks I may have bought an extra tin of tomatoes and tuna but that adds up to 5 tins of each. Which is hardly going to see us through. I haven't left the house since I did my usual weekly shop last friday and the monday before I bought freezer food as mine is usually empty of anything but chips and ice. I couldn't see any panic buying until last friday and then it has been crazy since by the sounds of it.

I think I will stay away from shops until everything is exhausted in my house and I can't cobble a meal together. People might have chilled a bit by then.

endofthelinefinally · 19/03/2020 14:45

We are eating mostly veg and lots of homemade soup.
I am sure our night vision will improve as we are eating plenty of carrots.

AdoraBell · 19/03/2020 14:50

DH went to the supermarket at 8 this morning to get a loaf of bread. He is in the elderly age bracket. He saw lots of older people with overladen trolleys and there was no meat or chicken left and no loo roll. That was before the general shoppers were allowed into the shop.

Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2020 14:51

If anyone is struggling for milk maybe find your local milkman?
I haven’t been able to get any milk at all since Monday, even long life but a local farmer with a milk round is going to deliver starting next week, 2l every other day. If it’s too much I will offer it to my neighbours but we do get through quite a bit, it’s more expensive than the supermarket but as they don’t have any I’m happy to pay (and fortunately I am able to)

TheSandman · 19/03/2020 14:56

I started as a Brexit prepper.... nothing so far has made me decide that after this is all over, that I will not be doing the same again pre Brexit. This is bad enough as is... with BoJo not committing to slowing down/delaying Brexit, it is likely to get far worse in the medium to long term IF he goes through with it.

THIS.

Except this time, since the pound has tanked against just about every currency in the world (including whatever they use up the unexplored bits of the Amazon basin), it's going to cost us a shitload more to restock anything that hasn't got one of those irritating 'Made in The UK' Union Flags stuck on it.

What's the betting, after the dust has settled, Blo Jo starts something like Wilson's pathetic 1968 "I'm Backing Britain!" campaign.

Wolfff · 19/03/2020 15:01

I went to my local Sainsbury earlier and the shelves were bare. Virtually no fresh stuff, no potatoes, no veg, no rice or pasta, very little bread, no vegetarian stuff, a little fruit, no frozen veg. I tend to do,a big shop online at the beginning of the month for loo roll, cans, soya milk etc as we are vegan/veggie as I don't have a car so can keep going for now but a bit boring.

I saw a woman take the only fresh vegetable, packaged spinach and shove all 10 or so packs in her basket. Unbelievable selfish and anti social.

LightAsTheBreeze · 19/03/2020 15:01

We already had loads in well beforehand, we are always well stocked so just had to get a few bits in. In fact I was able to release my next weeks Tesco slot as I had already been well prepared so that hopefully would have benefitted someone else
