Any ideas how this is going to play out? What about kids going to 6th form and uni?

DS not a happy bunny...

DD in pieces. She's been working her arse off. I think what is going to happen is that they're going to be awarded their predicted grades.

I know how she feels, I was in my final year of a law degree in the Christchurch quakes, and it completely mucked up my last year. Which means I feel her pain quite keenly.

It's not just exams, neither, there goes Prom, there goes yearbook.

My heart is breaking for these kids.

TreacherousPissFlap · 18/03/2020 18:31

DS and his friends are swinging between thrilled and upset.
His mock results are already good enough to get into sixth form so less problematic for him. It's the A-level students heading for uni in September I feel sorry for.

Fannia · 18/03/2020 18:35

My dd is really upset. She has been working super hard and is afraid whatever is done won't be fair. Also upset about missing all the treats like prom.

BarefootHippieChick · 18/03/2020 18:40

Dd due to do GCSEs is gutted. I just wish they could have been a little bit clearer on whether they're completely cancelled or just postponed but then I guess they don't know either.

flamingo40 · 18/03/2020 18:41

My son is gutted. All the hard work. But like I've said everyone is in the same situation.
It'll be interesting to see how it affects uni admissions now and how we move forward

triedandtestedteacher · 18/03/2020 18:42

They will use estimated grades

BarefootHippieChick · 18/03/2020 18:42

Maybe it's a lesson to the government to go back to good old coursework grades and not rely totally on final exams!

grafittiartist · 18/03/2020 18:44

Yes- bring back coursework!!!

WrongKindOfFace · 18/03/2020 18:44

It’s crap, isn’t it.

Nat6999 · 18/03/2020 18:49

We are in isolation for the next two weeks & after hearing the news ds realised that there are pupils in his class he may never see again, ones who are leaving to go to apprenticeships or college instead of sixth form.

ItWasntMyFault · 18/03/2020 18:51

My ds is celebrating, his predicted grades are quite good but he never does as well in the actual exams so it would be good for him.

BarefootHippieChick · 18/03/2020 18:51

graffitiartist back to you good old 80s!

BarefootHippieChick · 18/03/2020 18:52

the good old 80s..grrr

Lordfrontpaw · 18/03/2020 18:53

DS didn’t have a brilliant mock (lazy ass) but the teachers had predicted he would go up a couple of points, and he even managed to get a year award for work in chemistry (that’s quite a big thing). He has been working hard, and even the one teacher who used to delight in telling me how rubbish he is now really pleased with him.

What a pain!

They have two choices..

A . Take exams in July/August
B. Predicted grades.

The problem with A is that the options are only July/August. If we are all clear by then, millions of families would already have annual holidays booked. Many will not cancel until it's sure they are still prohibited from travelling. Having already been locked up in our homes for months families will want and need holidays. Late August, the only possible window is far to small a space in time to get exams sat, marked and clearing sorted in six weeks. Before Uni starts. Even putting University start back to October.

B is the only logical answer with the least resource required.

Bluntness100 · 18/03/2020 18:55

Looks like they are not delaying them and are going to award based on work to date. Some will like that, others will not.

Windyatthebeach · 18/03/2020 18:59

Gutted or not I will just be happy if my dc make it to the other side of this.
Never felt so guilty for having dc as today...

BarefootHippieChick · 18/03/2020 19:17

patchwork so true. We have a much needed holiday abroad booked in July and if it's safe to travel we will be going. But then if exams are being held how can we?! After all this stress and uncertainty kids need to know answers.

Janemarpling · 18/03/2020 19:19

From Scotland maybe England will be similar

WitchSharkadder · 18/03/2020 19:30

DS is absolutely gutted. His predicted grades are good and it's not that he minds those being used, it's all that build up, work, anticipation, revision etc seemingly going to waste.

ssd · 18/03/2020 19:36

It's not just prom etc the kids were looking forward to, it's the holiday bash to zante etc so many school leavers go on...

DrFoxtrot · 18/03/2020 19:46

My DD is gutted about missing the last day due to isolation - they'll be doing a year group photo and signing shirts etc. She's also had a school trip of a lifetime cancelled and probably no prom. I'm upset for her. I know there are worse things that can (will) happen, but right now we're very disappointed that each little thing that she was looking forward to has gone.

WitchSharkadder · 18/03/2020 19:49

Yes, exactly, DrFoxtrot, just a few weeks ago they had so much to look forward to and now it's seemingly all gone.

bemoreeverything · 18/03/2020 19:51

@Janemarpling

The SQA statement was released this morning before closures and and cancellations were announced. Fully expect them to come back with a definite response tomorrow.

Floralista · 18/03/2020 19:52

My DD has an unconditional offer for her 1st choice but leaving rural NI for London in September without a vaccine or acquired immunity is my main concern atm. Hers is not going to the school formal next month Hmm
