DD is distraught, she has worked so so hard. I really feel for this cohort of students who won’t have their chance to shine and will miss all those special times.

Menora · 18/03/2020 20:58

That is not usually how they would do things also year 11’s have completed most of the year as the exams were scheduled for May and they leave afterwards. So it’s very close.

Menora · 18/03/2020 20:59

I would think year 10’s and 12’s will need extra lessons to ‘catch up’ but same situation with mocks completed in November - this was early and half the syllabus had not been covered yet! I hope they would go on predicted grades for all of these years

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 18/03/2020 21:00

Not sure about year 12’s- that would be a tricky one to get them self learning/email support?

OP posts:
hairycabbage · 18/03/2020 21:00

I too have a dc in year 11 who is devastated after working really hard for a long time in preparation for GCSE exams.
She's also now convinced that she won't be returning to school after Friday, she won't see her friends again (they're all applying to different sixth forms) and doesn't know whether or not she should still be revising.
The uncertainty over everything is going to cause such anxiety and stress but there is not much I can do other than provide reassurance.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 18/03/2020 21:02

I must admit I was hopeful they would close schools but just do the exams for those able in year 11/13 but spread the children around the school for distance...
I think it’s so up in the air and wish they had delayed that statement until they had decided exactly what they were going to do so that all those affected would know rather than his anxiety about what will happen.

OP posts:
TabbyStar · 18/03/2020 21:06

They'll have to do something about year 10s and 12s as covering the whole curriculum will be hard, especially with teachers off, and they can't assume everyone has access to adequate technology - even in houses with computers, parents may be using them to work. Some A levels have coursework that counts towards the marks next year due in next term too.

HenHarrier · 18/03/2020 21:11

Our HT sent out a message to all parents this evening stating They [government] have also announced that there will be no exams in May June this year, which is not the same as saying they are cancelled.

So now I’m even more confused.

damnthatanxiety · 18/03/2020 21:13

Why are people angry??? What is wrong with you. This is a pandemic. It's not anyone's fault. They can't hold exams so they have to be cancelled. What possible point is there in getting angry.

RippleEffects · 18/03/2020 21:19

I've just told DS that every emotion he's feeling is valid. Angry that hes worked so hard, even this evening and its all going to be down to some as yet unknown meassure of his ability, sad that he wont see people hes familiar with and school life has just been cur short, confused that no one can answer his quesrions, relieved that he doesnt have to sit exams, happy to have some free time.

What is important is that he doesnt blame others for what is unfortunately out of our control. We need to work together, respect what our elected representatives experts are asking us to do and try to follow through with good grace.

Beansandcoffee · 18/03/2020 21:22

Not angry just so very sad. My son has worked so hard and was looking forward to the exams and performing. He was also looking forward to the prom before everyone goes their various ways. How would you feel if suddenly you were told to leave your office that you had been in for 8 years and there was no chance to have a leaving do with your colleagues or a leaving presentation. It’s not the end of the world but these are young people. It should have been handled better.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 18/03/2020 21:22

No one has said they are angry. Just that our children are upset. You need to RTFT @mathanxiety. We fully understand about the pandemic but it doesn’t stop people having other feelings.

I’m a bit annoyed that they hadn’t got a clue about what will happen before they announced it and I’m upset for all the children. DD is devastated. I’m sad for her and all the others who are equally upset.

OP posts:
HarveySchlumpfenburger · 18/03/2020 21:38

I’m not sure they can win tbh OP. Clearly the school year is over and they know there are going to be no exams.

If they hadn’t announced it they’d be getting it in the neck for knowing now but having strung pupils along for the next few months until they have a solution.
If they rush a solution through now so they can announce something it’ll be an utter cluster fuck and they’ll get it in the neck for that. (The record on rushing through exam/assessment changes isn’t great.)

TBH I don’t think there is a solution that isn’t going to disadvantage at least one group of pupils. It’s an utterly unprecedented and unexpected situation that absolutely nobody had a plan for.

chocolateisavegetable · 18/03/2020 21:49

RippleEffects love your response. Your DS is going to be just fine with your wise counsel

Bluntness100 · 18/03/2020 21:52

Sadly your head teacher is an uninformed idiot who should have spent five mins with mr google before communicating . They specifically stated in the commons they were cancelled.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 18/03/2020 22:08

Gavin Williamson has been very clear that there will be no exams this year...

OP posts:
Topseyt · 18/03/2020 22:11

Distraught? I would have thought it was the best news ever for most kids

You would have thought wrong in many cases. My DD is in Year 13 and has taken a great deal of pride in working towards her A Levels. She is eager to secure her coveted university place too. Why wouldn't she be?

We are concerned here too. The billion dollar question now is how schools, exam boards and universities will proceed from here. It is too soon for answers just yet though. We can only wait and hope for the best. It is clear that all options have their pluses and minuses, with no one size fits all.

Chewbecca · 18/03/2020 22:12

I thought he said this academic year, not this year. I.e. they could run in November for e.g.?

KickAssAngel · 18/03/2020 22:19

Had anyone heard if IB exams are happening?
We live in the US and DD is meant to be sitting lower exams this year. The school is completely shut so I don't have anyone to ask.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 18/03/2020 22:19

Email just received from DoE, they want schools to stay open during holiday..
“Gavin Williamson, Secretary of State for Education, has asked for this message to be passed to all those who work in the education sector

The government recognises the huge importance of the role you have played in maintaining the education, training and social care of our children and young people during this challenging time. I recognise that you will have the same anxieties as the rest of the country about your health and that of your families. On behalf of the Prime Minister and the entire government, I thank you all for all of your work so far, and your continued support. I am deeply grateful for the civic spirit and dedication of everyone working in education, and I will continue to provide my full support throughout this crisis.

Next steps

It is clear that education and children’s social care settings are increasingly finding it difficult to continue as normal, as illness and self-isolation impacts on staffing levels and pupil attendance. To provide parents, student and staff with the certainty they need we are announcing that schools, colleges and early years settings will be closed to everyone except children of key workers and vulnerable children from Monday, as part of the country’s ongoing response to coronavirus.

Examples of these workers include NHS staff, police and delivery drivers who need to be able to go to work. Vulnerable children include those who have a social worker and those with Education, Health and Care Plans.

A full list of key worker categories will be published by the Cabinet Office tomorrow.

Children who do not fall into these groups should remain at home with appropriate care.

Where schools are unable to provide this reduced provision, local authorities will work with the Department for Education’s regional teams to ensure an alternative option is available.

We are expecting early years providers and sixth form and further education colleges to do the same. We are working with Her Majesty’s Treasury on the financial support required. We are also asking that independent schools and boarding schools follow the same approach.

Where possible, we would encourage settings to stay open for this purpose throughout the Easter holidays.

Many universities and other higher education institutions are already taking necessary steps to keep their staff and students safe and where possible keep providing education. We are confident vice-chancellors are making the right decisions and the Department for Education continues to support them in doing so.

Temporary suspension of Ofsted inspections

Ofsted is to temporarily suspend routine inspections of schools, colleges, early years settings, children’s social care providers and local authorities to reduce the burden on staff who are providing vital services to the nation in response to coronavirus.

Update on assessments and examinations

We can confirm that we will not go ahead with assessments or exams, and that we will not be publishing performance tables for this academic year.

We will work with the sector and Ofqual to ensure children get the qualifications they need.

My Department is working closely with local authorities, representatives of early years, schools and head teachers, regional school commissioners and bodies such as Ofsted and Ofqual about how to deliver this change as effectively as possible.

And we will do whatever is necessary to support local authorities, settings, schools and teachers through the weeks and months ahead.

Free school meal provision

We will give schools the flexibility to provide meals or vouchers to children eligible for free school meals. Some schools are already doing this, and we will reimburse the costs. As soon as possible, we will put in place a national voucher system.

Thank you once again for everything you are doing at this difficult time.

The Rt Hon Gavin Williamson CBE MP

Secretary of State for Education”

Tbh I don’t see how they could do exams in November after over 6 months off and no teaching.

OP posts:
StormyClouds · 18/03/2020 22:23

@HenHarrier

That headteacher is absolutely out of order and should be apologising for stressing people unnecessarily. The education secretary was absolutely explicit that exams will not be taking place- not in May, not in June, not in December, not at all.

He also made clear that pupils will get their qualifications "on time".

Topseyt · 18/03/2020 22:25

Concerned would be a better word. Why can't we be? Many of us have been left trying to comfort our worried children, which isn't easy.because there are no answers as yet.

Not pointless at all.

StillDumDeDumming · 18/03/2020 23:05

Sorry if this has been asked, but what is Italy and France doing about major exams?

Also my ds is doing A levels as an external candidate. He has no teacher and no mocks. Does he get no qualifications. There’s literally no way for anyone to say what he’s due.

tenlittlecygnets · 18/03/2020 23:25

They have cancelled them! It said so.

But how to ensure that each student has an accurate grade?

Dd has worked her butt off for her GCSEs. So disappointed for her.
