DD is distraught, she has worked so so hard. I really feel for this cohort of students who won’t have their chance to shine and will miss all those special times.

OP posts:

I can’t believe they’ve cancelled the exams.

I’ve been that teacher for the last month saying, “No, of course they’re going ahead as usual.”

He dropped that bombshell quite sneakily, I think. And also, no mention of what would take place instead! “We will make sure they get their qualifications...” Exactly how, mate??

Dannny9 · 18/03/2020 17:34

It's so frustrating, I'm a student parent and have too worked very hard and am gutted but we can't do anything about it.

My university is moving to online exams (not sure if this is the case for your DD) so I'm not sure how well that will play out!

Seeline · 18/03/2020 17:36

A Y11 and Y13 here. What happens next??

SachaStark · 18/03/2020 17:37

Journalist right now asking BoJo re: exams.

RoseAndRose · 18/03/2020 17:38

They haven't called them off. They're changing the plans, not cancelling them

grauduroi · 18/03/2020 17:39

Did I miss that bit? I have a Y12 who is supposed to be sitting an exam in May and I too have been telling him that of course it will go ahead! What will they get instead?

RoseAndRose · 18/03/2020 17:39

But not managing to say what the new plan is.

Either exams or coursework with deadline after Friday

SachaStark · 18/03/2020 17:40

Well that was useful, BoJo. He just shook his head the whole time the journalist was asking about the exams, and then repeated that “we will ensure that their interests are protected”.

Confused
CuriousaboutSamphire · 18/03/2020 17:41

The exam boards haven't reported back yet. Predicted grades anyone?

ClassicallyConditioned · 18/03/2020 17:41

The exams are cancelled, not postponed. If they were postponed until August/September then who would mark them? Examiners are just teachers.

Predicted grades will be used. All teachers have already been instructed to submit these this week.

CIT80 · 18/03/2020 17:42

Welsh gov have issued statement to say they will get predicted grades in Wales

apricotdreams · 18/03/2020 17:42

Yes, I would think it will definitely be predicted grades.

drippingwet · 18/03/2020 17:42

A friend who works at a school has been told they’ll probably use mock results

CIT80 · 18/03/2020 17:42

Sorry don’t know how to do a click link

Chewbecca · 18/03/2020 17:43

I am gobsmacked and so disappointed for my DS (yr 11).

They clearly haven’t worked out yet how they will make sure pupils get the grades they deserve.

DS believes they will use mocks to determine yr12 entry in September. Not sure what would happen if they then sit GCSE in Nov and don’t meet the school’s requirements, get kicked out then?

Namechangervaver · 18/03/2020 17:43

Well that was useful, BoJo. He just shook his head the whole time the journalist was asking about the exams, and then repeated that “we will ensure that their interests are protected”.

Well obviously they don't know what's going to happen yet. Come on, guys, give them a chance!

SachaStark · 18/03/2020 17:43

There’s no possibility of using mock results, @drippingwet, as they are not standardised. Everyone who works in schools knows that.

StormyClouds · 18/03/2020 17:44

There is simply no other option- the epidemic is going to peak in May and we cannot have hundreds of DC in confined spaces. Exams cannot and should not be put before public health.

whatareyoucooking · 18/03/2020 17:44

Did he actually say the word cancelled?

I missed it and on the ticker it's saying "not take place in May and June"

Powergower · 18/03/2020 17:45

Using mock results or predictions is completely unfair. He said the qualifications will be decided fairly, this suggests some kind of guess work. Completely ridiculous. If schools are open for key workers open them up for exams! Predicted grades can be over inflated and mocks are usually not great because stoke kids don't revise for them.

grannycake · 18/03/2020 17:45

Ive seen the guidance from WJEC and its definitely predicted grades

EdithWeston · 18/03/2020 17:46

How on earth would they moderate predicted grades across schools?

When A level predictions aren't terribly well known for accuracy

Rosehip10 · 18/03/2020 17:46

@SachaStark No other choice. There is no normality.

drippingwet · 18/03/2020 17:47

@SachaStark ok then

SachaStark · 18/03/2020 17:48

Of course there’s another choice aside from mocks: predicted grades. Of the two, it is at least based on a greater amount of evidence, and more likely to be standardised against mark schemes.
