Larger families.... shopping limits

Anyone else having issues in getting enough food to make a meal for their family? I can't afford (nor have time) to make seperate meals for everyone. But I can't get enough of the foods we eat as a family in some lines.

We use 4 packs of mushrooms and 5 packs of peppers per week. We are only allowed 3. Same for yogurts etc.

I am working, not from home. I don't have time for daily shopping as I finish at, rush back before after school club finishes and get the kids home for dinner which is already later than I'd like.

I have a delivery pass, but that appears to be totally useless at the minute. We are potentially to be isolating from today as one of the kids may possibly have a cough. Even if I could get a slot, I'd need several slots in the week and you can't even get half the stuff you need anyway.

We don't have anyone to bring us food either. 🤷

Is it worth approaching the supermarket manager to discuss individual requirements?

I saw a woman have 1 of her 4 muller bloody lights removed from her today. I mean I understand restrictions in some areas. But most people would not consider 4 yogurts excessive/panic buying.

Help!

And yes, I am panicking. I'm guessing most people in my situation would be.

Think your are going to have to find other methods of foraging for your food, like corner-shops, coops, other outlets.

Individual requirements are you serious? I would love to know what the supermarket manager would say about that ... Hmm

PumpkinP · 18/03/2020 12:55

Yep. I’m a lone parent and have 4 children yet I’m hearing shops are only allowing 2 items of everything per costumer, so what am I suppose to do. Shop daily? I have no one that can go for me or help and no one to leave them with, so I will have to drag the kids out daily as I can’t leave them home alone (too young) I don’t drive either so going to be extremely difficult, got 2 with disabilities aswell so dragging them round to multiple shops is going to be fun, not.

okiedokieme · 18/03/2020 12:55

I'm feeding up to 7 adults each night, it's tricky, I'm making the kids go through separately (they are adults)

GirlCalledJames · 18/03/2020 12:56

Maybe phone the supermarket and ask?

Windyatthebeach · 18/03/2020 12:57

We have 5 x dc.. Dh had to argue for 7 tins of dcat food at Aldi ! Not looking forward to finding ddog food for 4 ddogs!
We use 4 pints of milk at least every day. Not to mention bread and loo roll usage!

DameXanaduBramble · 18/03/2020 12:59

Yeah, please don’t approach supermarket managers to discuss individual requirements. Are you for real?!

ThisMustBeMyDream · 18/03/2020 13:00

The other issue I found was all the larger packs were gone, so I had to buy the small 1L of milk x 3 where as I would usually get a 6L to last most of the week. Pasta sauce jars, usually get 2 x 750g jars which is within the limits, but they only had 250g jars. So could only feed half of us!

A pal of mine is telling me of the appalling treatment staff at his supermarket are having to put up with. Don’t for god’s sake add to their difficulties right now. Send one of the kids to the shop for you on rotation. You don’t get special treatment because there are more of you.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 18/03/2020 13:01

Yes I am for real, don't be so rude. People have been told to ask for help. I'd be asking for help so I can feed my family.

You're assuming I have older kids...

Maybe investigate what Milk and More can offer, I think they deliver cheese, yogurt, veg boxes?

Xmasbaby11 · 18/03/2020 13:03

You can only get little and often or go to various places. I think you could try to find local support in a Facebook group or similar. We have several support groups in our area with lots of people willing to go and get shopping for each other. Now is the time to reach out I think- we will all need each other.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 18/03/2020 13:03

Thanks maslinpan, hopefully they won't be too expensive. And can get supplies!

I'm feeding 6 and aside from fruit/veg/salad in using stuff from the freezer. I'm shopping daily for fridge stuff so no need to buy in bulk.

So far we aren't having any issues.

Finfintytint · 18/03/2020 13:03

Standard sizing, especially milk will be become limited. Six pint milk containers mean the bottlers have to keep changing lines over. They’ll get more to the supermarkets if they don’t waste production time.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 18/03/2020 13:04

Can you not re consider the meals that you are cooking so that you don't need five packs of peppers or six packs of mushrooms per week, or whatever it is?

Your five packs per week mean that others have no packs per week. Surely there are meals that you can make that you can pad out with less in demand products?

Annacarter · 18/03/2020 13:04

I can imagine that is so difficult :( It seems bonkers that there are the same restrictions for a single person or people with for example three young/teenage boys although I have no idea how they would police it. We are lucky there is just two of us although we do only have a tiny fridge/freezer.

Butterymuffin · 18/03/2020 13:04

You'll have to adapt to eating other things that can be shared across you all more easily. Tinned tomatoes to make sauce rather than jars. Big tubs of yoghurt rather than Muller lights. You get the idea.

AnneJeanne · 18/03/2020 13:05

I think the reality is that we won’t be able to eat the way we are used to. You will have to buy whatever is available and create some interesting recipes. And please don’t approach the supermarket manager. The implied entitlement in that thought is staggering.

Tootletum · 18/03/2020 13:06

I have the same problem. I use 8 tins of tomatoes a week, wtf do I do with a limit of two??

DesLynamsMoustache · 18/03/2020 13:06

I think you'll just have to change your repertoire and cook stuff that requires fewer multipacks of ingredients. We will all have to change the meals we eat based around what we have access to at the moment.

HermanHermit · 18/03/2020 13:06

Well I was assuming that you couldn’t really be so entitled but I guess I’m wrong. Check yourself - you don’t get priority. Do what everyone else is doing and adapt

Nanamilly · 18/03/2020 13:07

Op. start a thread and ask if people in your locality could shop for you. It was mentioned a few times on another thread just yesterday.
