Decision on schools closure coming 'imminently'

mymoonmyman2020 · 18/03/2020 12:46

From Guardian reporting on PMQs -

'Johnson pays tribute to teachers, and thanks them for their work in keeping schools open. He says further decisions will be taken “imminently” on schools, that will square the circle of stopping the spread of the disease, while wanting to relief the pressure on the NHS.'

Scottish news on schools also expected soon apparently.

Well this is ridiculous. My work have said it's a childcare issue and it needs to be coordinated with partner/family to take time off. I might develop symptoms next week so I have an excuse to self isolate for 2 weeks and get paid before I get sacked for being unable to come to work.

SpokeTooSoon · 18/03/2020 13:37

We need very widespread testing now so all these families isolating because one person in the house has a sniffle can get back to work and school. It’s so disruptive to children’s education and I’m very concerned about their mental health. Being kept hidden away at home because of some invisible menace that has hardly any chance of hurting them is bewildering, confusing and needless.

adaline · 18/03/2020 13:38

My personal opinion is that school is the best place for children right now. They have a very low risk of catching C19 and a tiny risk of becoming seriously ill.

You're missing the point entirely. Children are carriers because they rarely show symptoms, they'll spread it everywhere.

SpokeTooSoon · 18/03/2020 13:39

The last study I read showed that children are very unlikely to be carriers so I’m not sure why this theory has taken off with such certainty actually.

CormoranStrike · 18/03/2020 13:40

Wales and Scotland def shutting on Friday.

GabsAlot · 18/03/2020 13:41

i hope when the schools closes parents realise its not an esxcuse for a jolly outwith the family or it will all be pointless

rabbitsnose · 18/03/2020 13:43

Will nurseries close if schools close?

BG2015 · 18/03/2020 13:43

My school is still open but 3 staff (inc me are home) it's a small rural primary with 200 kids. We have 60 off today.

I've spent the past two days sorting out work for my class and our head is organising how we can support kids who need a hot meal and are at risk with safeguarding concerns.

I've offered to visit any kids at home once I can escape the house and support families. I and a few other teachers will offer supervision/childcare/ teaching if frontline staff need to go to work e.g drs, nurses, police etc.

Who knows how it will pan out though.i feel terribly guilty that I aren't in school and having to self isolate (DP got CV) but I feel well in myself and feel a fraud.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 18/03/2020 13:44

I cannot see English schools staying open now, except perhaps for a skeleton staff for front line workers.

Better get those board games down from the attic...

jaggynettle · 18/03/2020 13:44

Scottish schools closing from Friday

NotDisclosedToday · 18/03/2020 13:44

"My personal opinion is that school is the best place for children right now. They have a very low risk of catching C19 and a tiny risk of becoming seriously ill."

This is utter horseshit. Kids are just as likely to become infected, its just they are less likely to become symptomatic.

SpokeTooSoon · 18/03/2020 13:45

Unless I’m not understanding the semantics, how can we say children are at very low risk of catching the virus - but apparently they’re all carrying it and spreading it? Carrying it without symptoms would still show on a test.

A new study published today in Nature Medicine: Chinese researchers screened 745 children who had close contact with COVID-19 patients or were members of families that experienced outbreaks.

10 tested positive.

NeckPainChairSearch · 18/03/2020 13:46

What now Boris?

The government appears to be reacting after the event at every turn.

Expect another defensive-sounding: 'Yes! Now is the right time, according to The Model, like we said, right?!l' when once again, they've lost control of the narrative and people have already the very thing they say it's now time to do.

KipperTheFrog · 18/03/2020 13:46

I work for NHS, DH also unable to work from home. We both work “office hours” so can’t work opposite shifts. If school and nursery close we’re stuffed with childcare. Our default standby childcare is grandparents but they’re in risk group due to age.
I appreciate its putting people at risk, but people will also be at risk if DH or I don’t go to work. I don’t think there is 1 right answer.

NeckPainChairSearch · 18/03/2020 13:47

God that was garbled. It's possible some people knew what I was getting at. I'm making a toastie, it's distracting me.

stripes416 · 18/03/2020 13:47

If they close the schools will all nurseries close too?

Theresnobslikeshowb · 18/03/2020 13:48

We are in Wales, our school insured over a week ago that each and every student had internet access, a device and could log on to the remote learning, if they didn’t have access they have had paper based worked prepared for them. So we are all set thankfully, but honestly it’s not a shock, it was more of a when.

Washinglinewench29 · 18/03/2020 13:49

Can't wait to see children galore being dragged round the supermarkets next week because that's the future

amaryl · 18/03/2020 13:49

If I have to teach my son at home, it will not be pretty
I hope to God someone sends some straightforward work home. Preferably online work

Nekoness · 18/03/2020 13:50

I have a cousin who’s a teacher in another EU country. Their schools are “shut” but that doesn’t mean schools are closed - classes and teaching continue and she’s required to do online lessons and assign schoolwork.

It almost sounds like in the U.K., they’re bringing forward the Easter term break rather than teaching remotely.

ChloeDecker · 18/03/2020 13:50

I’m sorry if this is a stupid question but are all the teachers off in isolation due to symptoms

In my school, it’s symptoms, family member with symptoms or vulnerable such as pregnant, asthmatic etc.

We still have enough staff to manage to stay open (including me) but it’s getting tougher.

SpokeTooSoon · 18/03/2020 13:52

Can't wait to see children galore being dragged round the supermarkets next week because that's the future

This has been my point from day 1.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 18/03/2020 13:54

We have one member of staff off sick (non corona virus related) but lots of children off (not all virus related).

I wouldn’t be surprised if BJ announces closure for English schools from Monday in today’s press briefing.

I also think there will be some sort of provision for the children of key workers. We’ve been texting parents asking for (where willing to give) their job title and employer.

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/03/2020 13:57

Good. I’m glad this is finally happening. I took dd out yesterday due to the new rules and me having symptoms, which could be Coronavirus.

I’ve luckily thought to get as many of her school books together as possible. Her friend has been collecting them for us.

Anyone, who is self isolating, maybe you can do the same?

OldLace · 18/03/2020 13:58
