To escape UK amid Coronavirus fear?

roomonthebr00m · 18/03/2020 11:10

I'm originally from one of the Asian countries where Coronavirus is managed relatively better with high number of ICU beds per 1,000 people and a low mortality rate.

A silly thought maybe. But after looking carefully at the analysis of the government modeling published, I've got scared. I may be refused a bed as I have this condition, if I get I'll during peak. I have an underlying health issues and hearing the worst stories in Italy. Whereas in my home country I feel that at least I will have ICU bed and doctors.

My friend in the country are worried about getting it, getting ill and spreading. But they don't at all worry about not having enough beds or potentially being refused a treatment.

AIBU to fly ASAP before that country closes the boarder with Europe which looks very likely soon?

Yabu.

mauvaisereputation · 18/03/2020 11:12

Of course yanbu, why on earth would you be Confused. Assuming you have somewhere to stay and nothing to prevent you leaving then you should stay wherever you like. You will probably need to self isolate when you arrive, if staying with older relatives.

mauvaisereputation · 18/03/2020 11:13

Ha ok I wrote that comment before seeing the first yabu. I don’t know why anyone could consider you u in the circumstances.

sonjadog · 18/03/2020 11:15

If you want to be there and you can get into the country, why wouldn't you go?

Didiusfalco · 18/03/2020 11:18

What you’ve said sounds logical, but I’m not sure about the practicalities of getting anywhere at the moment and of course planes are terrible places for picking up infections.

Santaclauswhosthat · 18/03/2020 11:18

Absolutely go if you can and like a pp said just self isolate when you get there. I would rather be almost anywhere else than the UK right now. We have a piss poor health system anyway and the government is handling this badly. If you can get to somewhere with decent healthcare and a responsible government, do it.

SeriouslyRetro · 18/03/2020 11:20

I’d go if it was a home country that meant I had full rights to reside and use the health care system freely.

endofthelinefinally · 18/03/2020 11:21

I am in the same situation, but worried about the actual flight, being on the plane for 12 hours. Just weighing it up now as I would need to leave in the next day or so.

Bathbedandbeyond · 18/03/2020 11:22

I’d go in your situation. Potentially better outcome for you if you do become poorly with your underlying health condition but also, it’s one less person that may put pressure on the NHS.

LillianFullStop · 18/03/2020 11:23

Nothing wrong with choosing to ride out this storm somewhere you feel safer and more secure. Especially if you have underlying conditions.

It's your personal choice and if you are lucky enough to have the freedom to choose then you would not be unreasonable to take it!

TeddyIsaHe · 18/03/2020 11:24

I’d be out of the godforsaken country today if I could. Definitely go back if you can op, and you know you can access healthcare.

roomonthebr00m · 18/03/2020 11:24

Thank you everyone

Direct flights are all gone for the next few weeks. A limited number of indirect flights are expensive but are there to be booked.

I have 2 teens and a toddler. Flying with them on an indirect flight at this time may be more risky in terms of catching the virus. But once I enter the country, at least I know I will have a bed, a ventilator and doctors.

Some family and friends say I must fly now. Some say I'm completely overrating and am safer here self-isolating (to avoid airport and planes)

Overreacting*

Crack on.

Bye!

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 18/03/2020 11:28

Yes, I would go. The NHS will collapse in the next few weeks.

Bishybarnybee · 18/03/2020 11:29

People moving around are what spreads the virus. We've been told to stop all unnecessary travel. You're more likely to pick it up travelling than if you stay at home. You could take it to your home country. And every extra bit of the journey - in terms of indirect flights - increase your risk, and that of others. I think you're feeling an understandable urge to be in your home country at a very difficult time, but I think it would be selfish and foolish to go.

Imstillskanking · 18/03/2020 11:30

Get out now, while you still can. I am so worried for my family in the UK. Some of them are high risk. I wish i could bring them here to Australia.

The nhs will not be able to cope with this. It already can't cope with day to day life. What's happening in Italy will look like a walk in the park compared to what will happen in the uk

Imstillskanking · 18/03/2020 11:31

Planes aren't where you catch the virus. It's airports yuou have to be careful

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/03/2020 11:32

Where would you go?

mauvaisereputation · 18/03/2020 11:34

Hmm I do understand the nervousness about travelling in those circumstances. Also would it be an issue taking the teens out of school? On the other hand I guess if they are in school still isolation is difficult. I think I’d still go in those circs.

Lifeisabeach09 · 18/03/2020 11:38

Yes, I would go. The NHS will collapse in the next few weeks.

Stop scaremongering.

OP, most cases won't get to ITU unless you have underlying health problems.

You have to do what's best for you.

SonjaMorgan · 18/03/2020 11:41

I would go. Just make sure you take as many precautions as possible whilst travelling. I imagine that you would have a better support network back home and I think that will be incredibly important in the coming months. We have no idea of what trouble is coming with the economy and unrest.

Bringringbring12 · 18/03/2020 11:41

Are you alone here?
Do you have family there?

If yes and yes - seems very sensible

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/03/2020 11:41

If you have the option to go BA, they have been saying that they've got HEPA filters on all their planes, which are apparently operating theatre grade filters for the air, to reduce virus spread.

I don't know if other airlines have the same - I only know this because I've just had to cancel my BA flights to the UK (from Australia, annual visit) and it's on their website.

I think you should go if you can.

YgritteSnow · 18/03/2020 11:41

I absolutely would.
