To go to the beach this weekend?

I live on my own with 2 dogs, my DH passed away unexpectedly last year and my parents are isolated and at high risk so can't see them, I'm working from home for the next 3 months so pretty lonely.

My favourite thing is being near the sea, I love it as do the dogs. WIBU to drive me and the dogs to the beach (about an hour away) and take them on a massive walk along the coast? I'll take my own lunch so i don't need to go to a cafe etc. I'm in the UK and the stretch of beach I go to is normally pretty dead only a few other dog walkers.

This will be at the weekend!

It's fine. Even people who've been told to self isolate are allowed to go out for walks - just keep your distance from other people.

LittleYorkshireLass · 18/03/2020 11:19

@Isthisokay Go for it chick. I might do the same. Grin

rookiemere · 18/03/2020 12:37

Beach walk - absolutely fine. Cafe lunch - seriously why are people advocating this ?

I do feel very sad for local businesses particularly small ones, but do folks not understand how social distancing works? Small businesses should be able to get loans from the government to get them through, but voluntarily coming into contact with people when you don't need to seems a bit gung-ho at the present time.

NotARealAvery · 18/03/2020 13:12

I think it’s really important to still do low risk activities which are beneficial to us.

I took the dog out this morning, we usually go to a National Trust place which has closed down so went to the ‘busy’ park instead. There are usually quite a few dog walking groups going round and lots of individual walkers. Today I only saw one waking group with 3 dogs and a couple of other walkers. Was really strange it being that quiet.

caramac04 · 18/03/2020 13:32

I might take DGC as her mum will most likely be working}

dontgobaconmyheart · 18/03/2020 13:35

Why would this be a problem anyway? There is no protocol yet for total lockdown with no exercise- the beach is the perfect place (and tonic)!

YABVU for the whole "I'm not at risk" and a cafe lunch though. Other people are OP, there are other people in the community who very much are, social distancing doesn't work unless everyone does it and we have been told to do it. You have no idea whether you are a carrier, or whether you yourself will become ill. If you want to treat yourself take a flask and ping the cafe some money on PayPal, or get it takeaway from a kiosk.

Sounds great. Go for it. I got an email from Kew Gardens yesterday: they are staying open to give members, residents and those who can travel safely an opportunity for much-needed respite in the open air during these difficult times. Glasshouses, cafes, etc are shut but plenty to see and do while keeping your distance from others.

dottiedodah · 18/03/2020 13:38

Thank you. I feel better now ,will take my dog to beach tomorrow as planned .

SunshineCake · 18/03/2020 13:53

I am assuming now I have a cough I can't go to the beach with my dog ?

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 18/03/2020 13:58

I live on the coast and there is still plenty of dog walkers along the beach. Yesterday the kite flyers were out and a few wind surfers were braving the sea.

MiddleClassProblem · 18/03/2020 14:00

Other people are OP, there are other people in the community who very much are these people should be self isolating. A cafe with barely any customers a day vs a supermarket (which will stay open even in lockdown and as Italy has proven still with plenty of queuing) is a hell of a lot less likely to get it. It’s also a lot less likely to get it there than having kids at school. Hopefully England will close them this week but until they do it is absolutely hypocritical.

The social distancing guidelines says avoid large gatherings. If you see the cafe is busy, don’t go. Take hand sanitizer and wash your hands when you go.

And if you believe the government are going to give all businesses enough to survive this then that’s a joke. They will all get bare minimum...

Minesacider · 18/03/2020 14:27

I'd go, OP. My children will be off school from Friday, we will be doing things like beach/forest/park walks, otherwise we will all go stir crazy.

managedmis · 18/03/2020 14:29

I'd be doing that every day, op

Bibidy · 18/03/2020 14:32

I don't think people meant to have lunch in the cafe, but just to grab a sandwich or whatever and go. That's quick and very little contact, and the same as taking in a takeaway on the doorstep, which is fine.

pigsDOfly · 18/03/2020 14:42

Wonderful idea. Getting out and about is so important.

I get the impression that even if we're in lock down we'll still be able to get out for fresh air and exercise as long as we keep well away from contact with others. Otherwise there's going to be a major problem with both physical and mental health.

I walk my dog every day and rarely see anyone.

Isthisokay · 18/03/2020 14:42

Yeah i was going to take away if I do get anything from a cafe they might not be open anyway.

Do it, I went for a walk this morning, with 2 friends, we all stayed well apart but could still chat. It was lovely, felt refreshed physically and mentally afterwards.

mamansnet · 18/03/2020 14:46

Do it while you can, OP. Here in France, lockdown means we now have to fill in a form to take the dog for a walk, and we're only allowed around the block from what I can tell.

Duchessofblandings · 18/03/2020 14:47

Make the most of it while you still can, well away from others. Hope the sun shines for you.

I8toys · 18/03/2020 14:50

Do it. I may have to borrow a dog to go and do the same!

MitebiteonFrightNite · 18/03/2020 14:53

I'm a real stickler for the rules, but this is fine. As long as you maintain a 2 metre distance from anyone you come across, all advice says this is fine to do.

I'm in the small group of people who will be getting a call from the NHS Monday, with very strict measures we will need to abide by. I'm feeling a little frightened by it all, so DH has booked a beach hut for us all (us 2 and 2 DCs) on Sunday to have a last day getting as much fresh air and freedom as possible before the unknown on Monday.
We'll stay the required 2m away from other people and take lunch so we don't need to visit any shops.

bellabasset · 18/03/2020 14:53

I'm in Cornwall, while all group activities have been cancelled ie cycling, walking groups have been cancelled, you can walk on the beach or NT. Fingers crossed for dry weather, pop a fold up seat, blanket, book, reusable cup and buy a drink and takeaway from a cafe. Sit and enjoy the sun 🤞.

As a former dog owner I have always used a toilet roll in place of tissues as these can be flushed, store in a nappy bag before flushing. I have wet wipes and sanitizer.

Isthistrueor · 18/03/2020 14:59

Walking is fine. Also wanted to let everyone know that National Trust are opening up all of their sites to the public for free. You won’t be able to access the houses or cafes but the grounds and car parking will be free to access.

Abouttimemum · 18/03/2020 15:03

We still plan to go to the lodge in the woods we’d had booked next week with DS. We’ll be walking outdoors and on the beach but not much else, just relaxing away in isolation from all the jobs at home.

Rockbird · 18/03/2020 15:06

Definitely go. We're isolating due to a tiny cough dd2 has but there's nothing wrong with any of us. We plan to go to the coast tomorrow. We'll find a deserted spot away from anyone else and blow away the cobwebs for a bit. As long as there isn't anyone else around we'll be grand.

As you're not even isolating I wouldn't think twice. Enjoy.
