Or was there frantic panic buying and shelves empty?!

Just wondering as shopping here is more stressful than the virus for me. I have a baby and had spent half my day off visiting 5 supermarkets to find a pack or nappies. Not just nappies but so many things i need to make a family meal I can't get my hands on. I honestly can't keep doing this.

Try smaller corner shops, Spar, coop types these do seem to be better stocked around here currently A's panic buyers aren't heading to them in the same numbers.
Watching for answers to this though as I started a thread about shopping in lockdown then noticed this one.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 18/03/2020 06:44

I'm in Italy. There were empty shelves three weeks ago when this all started but that seems to be sorted out now. I got an online delivery yesterday and the only thing missing was eggs - and I think that was because my supermarket is a bit crap and doesn't substitute so there may well have been other sizes/types of eggs available but they didn't bring them. Mostly I have been going to local shops though to avoid queueing.

userxx · 18/03/2020 06:45

If the panic buyers stopped panicking this wouldn't be happening. Selfish morons who can't see further than the end of their nose.

user1483387154 · 18/03/2020 06:49

No panic buying here so shops are pretty fully stocked atm.
We are only in first week of lockdown.
You can go to any shop not just the nearest but most people just nipping out to their local one.

NoHunGosh · 18/03/2020 06:50

Only thing missing from my local Lidl in Italy yesterday was dried yeast but they had the fresh stuff. Think people panic bought things the first day or two bit have calmed down since realizing that there aren't actually any shortages.

headshoulderskneesandtoe · 18/03/2020 06:52

We've been in lockdown for a week and surprisingly no chaotic scenes at the supermarket and supply seems to be unaffected. I can get formula, nappies and most staple items without issue. It's surprised me after seeing the scenes in Australia and pictures of shelves bare in the UK.
Government have assured us supply chain will continue and have implemented measures to avoid price hikes.

NonUrinatInVentum · 18/03/2020 06:53

In France here, close to Geneva. Supermarket is well stocked but they were quick to control people going in and how much they could buy. We had to queue yesterday for an hour but one inside it was fine.

bluetongue · 18/03/2020 06:56

No lockdown in Australia but the supermarket situation is pretty si liar to the UK. Hand sanitiser and loo roll was just the beginning (many places have had no loo roll for weeks unless you’re there right after re-stocking). Now you can’t even buy mince of any kind

The supermarkets have brought limits but the empty shelves remain. Our primeminister’s response? ‘Stop stockpiling, it’s Un Australian’. Yep, I’m sure that’ll fix it Confused.

noFlowers · 18/03/2020 07:27

user1483387154 headshoulderskneesandtoe which country do you live in?.

So it seems just UK and Australian have gone mad! So countries that have been in lockdown and in more worse situation in regards to the virus can behave unselfishly and calmer why can't we??! It's making things so unnecessarily hard and stressful.

All the local grocery shops and butchers have hiked prices massively around here too - doubling prices on some products. They're saying that's what their suppliers have done so not their fault. I don't know if it's true or if they're lying!

I am in SA and i did a normal shop on Monday, everything was available except for hand sanitizer.

This was in the usual supermarket (like Tesco) but I have seen reports of some shops (like M&S Food) had empty shelves. Shops that have been affected like this have put limits on the amount of each items you can buy.

We also have an hour for pensioners to shop in the early morning.

Online shopping is not as available here as in Europe/UK so I do think there was some panic buying when the initial announcement was made.

Jenala · 18/03/2020 07:39

I'm hoping that if we actually go into lockdown then there will be more availability as buying will be a lot more controlled. We're not in lockdown at the moment so you can't control our current situation with a country in lockdown, where people need permission to leave and are only being slowly let into shops.

Jenala · 18/03/2020 07:40

Can't compare our current situation, not control

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/03/2020 07:45

I think one lockdown comes, in a way, the panic stops.
Like Seventy I am in Italy and our supermarkets are well stocked, and shelves continually refilled. Knowing what was coming I stuck an extra couple of boxes of pasta, sauce etc and stuff for the freezer every time I went for a while, but we've not noticed problems other than you have to wait to be allowed in because of the distance regulations. They are only letting a few in at a time.

Like many aspects of daily life (you only have to look at the threads where at the moment people are unsure of what will be expected) things actually are more settled once you have the proper regulations in place.

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/03/2020 07:48

I do agree with Jenala...threads popping up with "I'm in lockdown AMA" I don't think are useful because though the basic premise is the same, the laws are going to be different. I've seen posters asking if they can go out and exercise and being told yes...not in my town we can't, because people were gathering in groups to run along the seafront so the mayor has closed it off. Etc.

Try not to worry.

LIZS · 18/03/2020 07:50

I understand situation has been similar in Switzerland including 10 day wait for online shopping slots.

headshoulderskneesandtoe · 18/03/2020 07:50

@noFlowers I'm in the Middle East. There was huge queue for the alcohol shop, but even that was orderly once inside and people weren't being ridiculous (ie can't afford to buy enough stock in one go! It's very expensive here)

I went to the supermarket this morning and no problems at all. Did a normal shop, just used lots more hand sanitizer and didn't take my DC. Most people are generally self isolating as well, and pretty much everything closed last night (except pharmacy and supermarkets)

NoAngel1 · 18/03/2020 07:53

Very reassuring to read these answers. I hope people in the UK calm down soon. My mum is stuck in unwell (not corona) but I’m struggling to pick up essentials for her.

Frenchw1fe · 18/03/2020 07:56

In SW France. Carréfour a little low on toilet rolls and no hand sanitizer but otherwise calm and decently stocked. The general store in town is well stocked. No signs of panic. Although in another town 30km away the Lidl was literally stripped bare.
The brico is still considered essential and the Mairie is open too.

Squigean · 18/03/2020 08:01

I'm in Ireland - so no lockdown but social distancing; all schools, pubs, bars and public buildings such as libraries and museums are closed.

Shops were emptied (of everything) first day and second day. As far as I can see ithe panic buying has slowed down now. I was last in a shop (Aldi)Saturday early afternoon and everything was available including bread, pasta and loo rolls.

I need to go back to today. So checked various shops.

Lidl have number limits on various items and have 9-11am as priority hours for the elderly.

Aldi has limit of four of any item.

Dunnes I'm not sure - can't find a message.

Tesco Ireand have Monday, Wednesday and Friday a dedicated hours for OAPs and family carers.

Supervalu - not sure, no message on site or twitter that I have seen.

noFlowers · 18/03/2020 08:02

NoAngel1 I know. I hope people in the UK can just calm the hell down. I have elderly parents who are self isolating and my dB is the only one visiting them to drop off essentials / check on them and he has found it difficult too.

AmeliaE · 18/03/2020 08:04

Here in France, shops are well stocked. It takes time to do the shopping because you need to queue at the entrance to avoid overcrowding the shop.
There are less slots available for deliveries and pick up but there are still some available for the next week.

woodencoffeetable · 18/03/2020 08:06

a relative works in a supermarket in germany.
they had issues restocking last weekend (before the lock down) but it's now back to normal.
they have extra security though and only let in a limited number of customers at a time,

ElliePhillips · 18/03/2020 08:10

I'm in Berlin. On Saturday the shops were busy and hectic but still polite and orderly and by no means empty of food. Shelves were sparse in some sections though, especially potatoes (Germans love them Grin). Loo roll was very low a couple of weeks ago but then was quickly restocked.

We've been online shopping weekly since Jan/Feb because I suspected this lockdown was coming. Now the online supermarket has no fresh veg and but lots of other food can be bought online.

I'm British and I'm afraid I think the frantic panic shopping you see in Blighty is because there is more of a live for now culture in the UK (hence not having prepared a few weeks in advance for this) compared to a culture like Germany which believes strongly in being sensible and prepared.

Unfortunately, we also have a lot of people in the UK who work very long hours for very low pay and have to pay very high mortgages or rents so are not in a position to buy food in advance. In comparison Berlin rents are state controlled, unemployment benefit is up to 70% of your last salary, nursery care is free. Honestly, living away really makes one view their own country with new eyes.

IStressheadI · 18/03/2020 08:12

I am freaking out about the current situation. If this continues people like me are going to have nothing to eat while selfish fuckers are apparently making themselves a baked bean fort.
I really think something needs to be done. Sad

Booboostwo · 18/03/2020 08:18

Supermarkets are fully stocked here in the south of France. There were queues right before the lock down but most people had a basket or half a trolley. The odd person had a full trolley, but no one was going nuts.
