Substituting powdered milk for Baby Milk Formula

Anxiouslywaitingfortheend · 17/03/2020 18:23

I can't believe what i am hearing.. people are actually buying baby formula milk as powdered milk has became unavailable to buy leaving mothers with babies (including myself) frantically trying to find formula for their little ones. How can people be so selfish? Whats the most horrendous thing youve heard due to Covid-19? Im worried, massively about not being able to feed my baby. Sad

Some hateful woman on a local selling group was selling tins of formula for £40 a ton and she had 35. So obviously there is a certain "panic buyer" who has stocked up on these items knowing it can profiteer from them. Horrible bastards.

Minesril · 18/03/2020 05:26

I'm due in a week and have also bought a tin just in case - if this wasn't going on we wouldn't have bothered. Actually my husband bought it and i was a bit cross with him at first for ethical reasons...if we don't need it we'll donate to the midwife.
This is all that's happening - people are buying extra. Nobody who has tasted the stuff would surely believe you can use it as a adult milk alternative?? There can't be that many stupid people!

Honeybee85 · 18/03/2020 05:30

Are people really that selfish?
Well if they don’t survive the virus then surely there must be a special place in hell for them.

Mummyoflittledragon · 18/03/2020 05:47

I’m glad you found some. Can you put an sos on your local Facebook page? Also if you start a new thread and put an sos on here with the areas you are prepared to travel to, perhaps Mumsnetters will but some for you to collect.

Anxiouslywaitingfortheend · 18/03/2020 08:09

@Mummyoflittledragon luckily i have a large family who are all searching for it for me so i dont think i need to ask for others peoples help right now. Im just hoping my family somehow manage to find some.

@frillyfarmer how can she justify doing that to other human beings? There is no way i could afford to spend that amount of money

I went to 5 different supermarkets last night to find formula and none of them had the one I need. I’m going to have to resume the search today but I’m getting very worried.

bemoreeverything · 18/03/2020 08:59

who are you talking to? im saying what i got told, now dont start being nasty. If yoh have nothing nice/helpful to say then dont say it. No wonder theyres so many people with mental health problems and feeling suicidal when people still talk to peoole like piece of shit.

Ok. I understand this is stressful; I really do. But pointing out that people shouldn't believe everything they read/hear and should apply their own common sense/logic isn't actually a terrible thing to do. It doesn't give people mental heart problems or cause suicides, that's a huge leap and bloody well out of order.

regret posting, i honestly expected people to be kind in this situation and actually attempt to give me some helpful advice. Not say "bollocks" or whatever else

I'm sorry you feel this way, but it's perfectly fine for people to tell you it is bollocks, because it is bollocks. There is so much shit flying about just now it's bad enough that people are believing it themselves; but when they go on to further share it the problem just grows. To point out it's not true is fine.

In terms of formula most of our local supermarkets had some in yesterday, so the supply chain is working, albeit slowly. Local Facebook pages are great just now as people are posting pics of the shelves in various shops. Try and join as many as you can.

Tulipstulips · 18/03/2020 09:02

I’ve heard that - buying baby milk, for their cups of tea. Terrible if true.

I did read on FB (so obviously might bollocks) that you can try emailing or calling the manufacturer who might be able to send some out direct.

Duchessofblandings · 18/03/2020 09:05

These people should be arrested and charged with profiteering. There were very high penalties for it during the wars.

Duchessofblandings · 18/03/2020 09:06

(Those selling on at ridiculous cost)

Anxiouslywaitingfortheend · 18/03/2020 09:25

@bemoreeverything it is not bollocks, see below poster about her DH. FFS. Honestly, why are you bothering to comment since your comments arent useful?

The shortage is true. People buying it for their tea and coffee is absolute crap.

I actually didn't want to, but your post In the middle of the night really wind me up, so I responded. It was really quite bad of you to lay blame regarding mental health and suicidal thoughts at my door simply for pointing out that their had been a HUGE rumour about this in SM recently and don't believe everything you read/hear. You really seem to be gunning for me, which is interesting because I am not the only person, by a long shot, to have said the same thing.

Yesterdayforgotten · 18/03/2020 09:51

They have a limit per person on it in my area now.

Yesterdayforgotten · 18/03/2020 09:52

I haven't heard of anyone doing his bit based on some extremely ignorant people it wouldnt surprise me but I think gr pricetag would stop them tbh

Yesterdayforgotten · 18/03/2020 09:53

this but+

Yesterdayforgotten · 18/03/2020 09:53

the price tag* sorry I have a toddler climbing on me

Keepitup · 18/03/2020 10:46

it is not bollocks, see below poster about her DH. FFS.

But he bought it because his wife is due in a week.

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/03/2020 11:43

People are bulk buying formula and either selling it on Facebook / Ebay or onto Asian buyers. It’s going for anywhere between £40-100 a tin. Locally health visitors are helping women who formula feed with babies younger than 6 months to restart their breast milk supply if possible.

anniefrangipani · 18/03/2020 12:03

OP, ask hour local baby bank if you have one. Often they have donations of weird types of formula that people bought three tins of and then found it didn't work. My local baby bank once received ten tins of super-expensive soy and dairy-free formula.

Alternatively, there's Facebook groups offering donor breast milk in case parents are taken ill or can't get formula.

GlamGiraffe · 18/03/2020 13:12

@MrsTerryPratchett
You cant even buy a bag of flour here let alone a bag of oats, none of it's working in practice. I've tried. Does anyone have any ideas for them? None of the supermarkets of health food shops have any. Are you managing yo get them?

Chinks123 · 18/03/2020 13:38

I can’t see people buying it for tea and coffee surely, the stuff tastes vile!
We drove to 4 different supermarkets to find ds’ formula, it is worrying.

WorldOfPhoebe · 20/03/2020 08:04

I was majorly panicking a few days back because I hadn't been able to pick any up for the last two weeks. (My little one is on Cow & Gate comfort, and gets through two tubs a week).

I hunted high and low online and found some on 'chemist(dot)net'. Haven't linked because there's no way in hell I'd click a random link either.

Not affiliated at all - it's just an incredibly scary time when you potentially can't feed your 3 month old.

(I'll happily send my order receipt to anyone who needs reassurance).
