I’m devastated, I sat down to listen eagerly and wish I hadn’t bothered.

Just listened to Rishi Sunak boast about how much help for homeowners and businesses (great) but what about the self employed? What about renters?

I’m so so frightened.

I had the same thought. It is all well and good giving mortgage holders 3 months relief, but how does that roll down to private renters? Because god knows many landlords will still want paying regardless of their own financial assistance.

AlCalavicci · 17/03/2020 17:33

It is crap isnt it ,
I can not advise you on Self employed but I got intouch with my HA yesterday and asked if I need to can I defer the payments for a while , the lady I spoke to seems to think it would be possable but needs to refer it higher up, I am waiting to hear back .

I would recommend everyone that may struggle to pay bills of any sort gets in touch with the service provider / credit card company etc and ask if they can reduce or defer payments before they start getting in to difficulties , in the past when I have had money problems I have found most company's are understanding (e-on were fantastic )

Utterlybutterly8 · 17/03/2020 17:35

Good point. I’m hoping one of the journalists at the press conference on BBC1 right now will bring it up, but nothing yet?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 17/03/2020 17:35

to be fair one set of measures cant help everyone in one go

there is some suggestions that more stuff will be announced in the next few days

EvilPea · 17/03/2020 17:37

Yep I sat down in the same situation op. We privately rent, dh is adamant he can’t afford to self isolate if needed. He’s a tradesman, can’t work from home.

ferrier · 17/03/2020 17:37

Look at whether you are entitled to benefits. Rishi Sunak's budget mentioned minimum income floor being relaxed for self-employed. I have yet to see the detail. I'd suggest that most self- employed cannot be in gainful self-employment for the foreseeable future but that's just a hypothesis. Awaiting clarification..... as the whole country is on most things to do with coronavirus.

EvilPea · 17/03/2020 17:38

I text him about the loan offer and he said
“Oh goody, in debt to the government, I can’t wait”

Marieo · 17/03/2020 17:38

If it's £330 billion I would wait to see when it is published in writing rather than just the press conference as it may be more comprehensive.

Msloverlover · 17/03/2020 17:40

I got that measures for individuals would be discussed tomorrow? There was something said about that. This seemed to be mostly focused on businesses, with the mortgage thing chucked in at last minute.

Cassimin · 17/03/2020 17:40

I’m a landlord.
If your having problems and you’re a private renter I would let them know.
If my tenants are unable to pay I would rather they tell me than just not pay.
Mine are good tenants so I would try and help as I wouldn’t want them to get too stressed or to ruin our relationship by them just not paying.

I just can't believe how much money this government has. I thought there wasn't a magic money tree

SuperlativeScrubs · 17/03/2020 17:45

@Utterlybutterly8 The first journalist to ask mentioned the mortgage payments and asked if there would be relief for rental payments. The question appeared to be dodged...

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 17/03/2020 17:45

No it doesn’t Koala sadly. I don’t have a business registered, I’m ‘just’ a sole trader.

I rent from a housing association.

You can claim universal credit for short periods of time which will cover rent. You can't claim mortgage payments on UC so that's why they are specifically being told they can defer payments for 3 months. Dont worry, the interest will still pile on.

ArthurMorgan · 17/03/2020 17:47

Same position op. Dp is a tradesman, we were barely hanging on before this. I contacted my landlady asking for her address for a uc application and she replied that she wants £90 more rent a month. So when they put the restrictions back in place on uc and we don't qualify anymore, we pay more rent. Can't win.

SerendipitySunshine · 17/03/2020 17:48

Yes, sole traders have been royally screwed in that announcement.

ArthurMorgan · 17/03/2020 17:49
  • our tenancy agreement ended about 10years ago... To claim we need a new one where she's going to put the rent up on it.
AutumnCrow · 17/03/2020 17:54

Yes, please claim Universal Credit asap. It's all being done online now, no face to face stuff, and the maximum income floor has been relaxed.

www.gov.uk/self-employment-and-universal-credit was the link I just saw but it's being updated frequently.

But get your claim in, and especially for the rent element.

Also claim council tax discount online from your local council asap.

Good luck to us all, frankly Flowers

SuperlativeScrubs · 17/03/2020 17:56

@ArthurMorgan I would talk to Shelter or somewhere about that, as she could be seen to be trying to charge more based on this crisis.

Given that her mortgage will freeze for 3 months this seems like a dick move.

BarbedBloom · 17/03/2020 17:58

I am worried, we private rent and have been told we must keep paying or we will be evicted. I now can't work or be paid for 12 weeks and my husband may be on SSP which comes nowhere near our rent, let alone anything else. Am worried sick

Isn't benefits attached to income levels anymore?

When I had to change careers my training income was really low, as a parent I received WTC and CTC.

MyopiaUtopia · 17/03/2020 18:01

I'm really hoping there will be provisions for renters too
