I would go. Swimming is not a social gathering. My kids swimming lessons are pretty much the only thing bar school that hasn't been cancelled

BikeRunSki · 17/03/2020 07:53

We have had similar emails to MzHz from DS’s swim club and DD’s lessons (different pools). I get that chlorine will kill the virus, but it’s the changing rooms and reception areas I’m thinking about.

wonkylegs · 17/03/2020 07:56

I would check they are open - our council closed ours, along with a raft of council run venues yesterday

Kateplaysrugbyinmydreams · 17/03/2020 07:58

Go whilst you can.

paininthepoinsettia · 17/03/2020 08:00

Our school have banned all after school activities, but bus-ing 50 children for swimming lessons is fine, because it is during school hours Hmm

smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 08:01

website says open. although I`d call ahead.

if not a drive to an empty beach for a walk ok?

YoursTunbridgeWells · 17/03/2020 08:03

DS's competitive swim club is still training and that's about 5 kids per lane times about 8 lanes this was advice from Swim England that it was still ok.

Ours too. But we are lying if we think it's not non-essential social contact. It is non-essential. How is sport essential?

Germany, France, areas of the US, Italy, Canada etc have all closed pools.

Countmeout · 17/03/2020 08:04

Some leisure centres here shutting. I wasn’t going to this week as I was supposed to be on holiday but I won’t be even if our local one was open. Too many germs in pools / changing rooms etc never mind how many interactions you might have on the way. And try stopping a smallish child touching everything!

RainydaysandMondaysalways · 17/03/2020 08:06

Don't go, why risk it

Lightsunbeam · 17/03/2020 08:06

I was in my local pool on Sunday. It’s usually crowded but it was SO empty.

Plus I am pretty sure I read that chlorine kills the virus...

So I’d go and maybe (if you’re driving) have some clothes in a bag you can throw on at the side of the pool rather than use the changing room? If that’s possible!

RainydaysandMondaysalways · 17/03/2020 08:07

if not a drive to an empty beach for a walk ok?
Much better idea

Isadora2007 · 17/03/2020 08:13

Go!
The government needs to stop with the advice or guidance and make more clear statements.
If you’re in a low impacted areas where services are still open and your child is otherwise healthy etc then I’d go. My childrens gymnastics club is still opening- and the kids will be going there until and unless they’re forced to close or the schools shut.

MrsDrSpencerReid · 17/03/2020 08:14

DS still went to his swim class yesterday, and we’ve had an email today saying business as usual at this time, with extra hygiene measures.

We’re in Aus not UK. No confirmed cases in our area.

codenameduchess · 17/03/2020 08:17

Our local council have closed the pool, and the rest of the council run facilities as of last night. I suspect others may follow suit as it's not the pool that's the concern it's everything else - the travel there and back, the surfaces in the building, the changing rooms, the close contact

MzHz · 17/03/2020 08:21

Plan is entirely consistent with advice. I drive to a car park, walk in through the barrier which is opened by reception behind a desk without me doing anything

I don’t touch anyone, I don’t even need to talk to anyone, warming up before practice means we’re metres apart. my coach speaks from pool side, life guards are on their perches, I don’t need to interact with them, I share the club Lane with my oh, and maybe one other squad member. We have plenty of space and when we’re in the water we’re actually safe! Which is a blessing.

It’s not a social gathering.

Like I said, it’s the hard surfaces we are careful about and I antibac before driving off back home, then wash hands while I’m making myself my post training cuppa

MzHz · 17/03/2020 08:24

The difference here I suppose is that I am the swimmer, I’m not taking kids there.

That said, the junior squad parents just drop their kids outside the centre and collect at 10pm...

wonkylegs · 17/03/2020 08:25

@smellycatwee
Beach is absolutely fine idea

TheClitterati · 17/03/2020 08:32

I'm going for a swim now. They will be closed soon.

We are all going to get very unfit!

OneThousandthNameChange · 17/03/2020 08:44

My DS's swim club is still running. I'm really relieved to be honest as he will be very difficult to live with, without it. Swimmers are a whole different species! At club level (and any regular swimmer) most of them will not function well without their daily swims. It's like a drug I gather (I don't swim, but this is what I can glean from observing DS). I know at some point our pool or club will close, (and that will be truly devastating), but for now DS will continue to go unless he starts showing any symptoms. It's his lifeline (and so to for most of the other kids and adults at the club) ...

Blueceramic · 17/03/2020 08:47

The pool may be fine due to chlorine but the building and the other people working or visiting may not be.

SnoozyLou · 17/03/2020 09:11

I remember the Health Minister mocking the interviewer when she was asked whether swimming was still ok. Of course it is, she said. We just need to carry on with our daily lives.

Now she has it. Enough said.

Jespers · 17/03/2020 09:14

I might go for a swim in the chlorinated pool, but I wouldn't take the kids as they won't be careful in the changing rooms about touching surfaces then their faces the way I would be.

xJune88 · 17/03/2020 11:36

Weve had an email from waterbabies saying all lessons are suspended with immediate effect..
