Tbh the chemicals in the pool you will probably be fine if going in the pool . The spectators shouldn't be going though so I suspect lessons will be cancelled .

Joans3rddaughter · 17/03/2020 07:27

No.
The advice is to avoid social gatherings. Why would you go against the advice?

smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 07:28

its a big council pool, very quiet in the weekday afternoons (we once had it to ourselves!). ds is 12 , so not a snotty toddler. it would be a shame to not go.....but if thats the way it has to be?

If you google this, you’ll see the advice is that chlorine kills the virus.

I’m a swimmer so am going to keep going as long as I possibly can.

The places you have to worry about are the changing rooms, lockers, doors etc and other people

So when I swim I shower before, then again afterwards. Try to limit touching anything and also my face, I then antibac my hands and wash them again at home.

Make sure you have enough space between you and others.

smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 07:30

I am errring on "no". and a walk on the beach instead (no one will be there!).

OP posts:
smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 07:31

we always shower there. and shower at home as chlorine smell is still there later I find!

OP posts:
smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 07:32

its not an area with cases confirmed..... mmmm

NewIdeasToday · 17/03/2020 07:33

A walk on a quiet beach sounds Lucy better. We all need to take this stay home advise really seriously.

MzHz · 17/03/2020 07:33

This is on our centre’s website

Public Information

We would like to reassure customers that Everyone Active’s leisure centres remain open. Our fitness gyms and studios are regularly cleaned, and we ask that customers utilise the anti-bacterial cleaning sprays and paper towels provided in gym areas to wipe down your station before and after use.

As per advice from Pool Water Treatment Advisary Group (PWTAG), it is also safe to go swimming at this time, as the water and the chlorine within the swimming pools will kill the virus.

To reduce the risk of infection we would ask customers to observe good hygiene practice by showering before using the pool, and to follow the necessary hygiene precautions when visiting public places.

TeddyIsaHe · 17/03/2020 07:33

I don’t know. The govt has only advised, so if they want people to actually heed that advice they need to implement it properly. So for now I’d probably still go, unless I was showing any symptoms.

Bunnybigears · 17/03/2020 07:33

DS's competitive swim club is still training and that's about 5 kids per lane times about 8 lanes this was advice from Swim England that it was still ok.

TeddyIsaHe · 17/03/2020 07:35

Also, without the govt forcing shutdowns local businesses are going to go under at a rate of knots, I’m planning on still using/going to as many as possible until we’re out on lockdown.

The businesses can’t claim on their insurance without the govt forcing closures, so they’re fucked until that happens. It’s reprehensible.

NewIdeasToday · 17/03/2020 07:35

Really. Don’t go.

We should all assume that there are cases in our community even if not being reported yet. Because it’s spreading quickly and even very likely cases aren’t being tested in the UK. So our data is an under estimate.

smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 07:37

I think I may go then. while we still can. just be cautious. just no sitting in the chipshop restaurant after for tea! .....but we could sit outside with the seagulls and have them there? (they`ll be pleased lol).

Joans3rddaughter · 17/03/2020 07:38

MzHz
But your plan is not consistent with current Govt advice.
What about your interaction with pool staff? How are you travelling to and from the pool?
The advice is for everybody to try and protect everybody. There is no specific advice regarding swimming pools.

Salene · 17/03/2020 07:38

No - Avoid all non essential travel

That means go to work, go get food and go home

Apart from that no one should be going anywhere

smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 07:38

no symptoms of anything here. we arn`t social butterflys to be honest.

OP posts:
Chewbecca · 17/03/2020 07:38

I was wondering about this too. We go weekly (3 in a class) and last week the teacher stressed the chlorine made it safe but this week’s govt guidance means I am now unsure again.

I also haven’t paid next term’s fees as I suspect it will be cancelled by then but equally wonder if I should pay regardless because it’s their livelihood.

cologne4711 · 17/03/2020 07:38

I went yesterday and most people were there. However, there was a feeling it was likely to be the last one for some time.

smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 07:39

travel in my car. I`d keep distance from others. no touch pay....

OP posts:
SnoozyLou · 17/03/2020 07:41

No. It isn't so much the pool itself. It can survive on surfaces, is airborne in just a cough, and think how many other people come and go there every day.

LouLouLoo · 17/03/2020 07:42

It’s not the pool it’s the changing rooms! I’ve decided against taking mine.

smellycatwee · 17/03/2020 07:45

this is where we need more clarification from the government?

I still can`t decide!

OP posts:
SnoozyLou · 17/03/2020 07:45

The govt has only advised, so if they want people to actually heed that advice they need to implement it properly.

But they will say, well you were warned. I wouldn't like to pick it up now. 7 days until you start showing symptoms. For those who develop pneumonia, it's 14. I think in a couple of weeks, the NHS could be looking very different. I was at a hospital yesterday. It was eerily quiet. Not looking forward to going back in a fortnight.

Sunshinesky1981 · 17/03/2020 07:51

We are in the same boat OP. We have had an email from DS swim club say they will continue running as the government has not said 'compulsory closures' but to be honest I'm thinking that that is due to them not wanting to refund parents for prepaid lessons
