How is this going to work?

If so many people have no idea about the guidelines?

I've been off from work with a cough and was talking to my mum who is in her early 50s saying that my headache has gone and her response was "oh that's good you can go back tomorrow" when I told her I can't go back for a minimum of 7 days but now 14 as the kids have to stay off she said I was being ridiculous. She had heard nothing about the news from Friday or the update. She still thinks I'm being stupid as it's clearly just a cold and I am putting my job on the line as companies don't like people who skive (I haven't had a day off until now in the 3 years I've worked there).

I've also seen lots of people saying it's all being blown out of proportion and that they aren't listening to it. So basically what hope is there that the public will actually follow any of tbis?

We will end up in complete lockdown because people won't stick to the guidelines and schools will close too. Just like Spain and Italy and others.

reefedsail · 17/03/2020 06:21

If we don't do this voluntarily the will use their 'powers' to force it. Boris said he hoped he wouldn't have to do that...

kimlo · 17/03/2020 06:24

people aren't following it. Yesterday at work I spoke to someone who didn't have a clue about the self isolating for 7 days but I also spoke to someone who's partner has a cough but is refusing to self isolate.

We will be sent down in to a total lockdown, but the government will say it wasn't our choice but people wouldn't follow the rules.

TripleSeptic · 17/03/2020 06:25

It needs to go to lockdown so people have an excuse not to pay their bills. People will keep working if they don't have a financial buffer. Terrifying but true. SSP isn't enough to live on. Universal credits don't apply to everyone. Financial institutions haven't changed their policies about payment holidays for loans and credit cards. Lots of folk don't want to be seen to be taking a "2 week holiday"

MistyMinge2 · 17/03/2020 06:26

the government advice is too soft. I feel like I have no choice but to go to work at the moment. My boss has talked about the possibility of us working from home, but that's only if we're forcibly locked down. It's all very well saying people 'should' work from home but I bet there's loads of people that feel like they don't have that choice and have to go in for fear of losing their jobs. They need to take hard action if they really want to stop the spread. 'should' isn't going to work.

Casino218 · 17/03/2020 06:26

Tell her to wake up. I'm having to do this with my SIL at the moment. She's in la la land. I'm being blunt with her because I don't think she's thinking through the implications for her mum or her sister. It's so frustrating.

Stellaris22 · 17/03/2020 06:31

I fear lockdown will happen. We are all self isolating as I have a persistent cough (not sleeping because of it, so definitely persistent) and DH has a temperature and has been visiting London for work.

I hate feeling like an utter fraud for missing work. Have a dog (luckily low exercise requirements) and standard response from other walkers is refusal to self isolate when they have symptoms as 'it's all a load of nonsense'. Makes me really angry as it's missing the point of isolating yourself and that attitude will make the situation worse.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 17/03/2020 06:32

On Facebook last night there was a mum who has 4 children. Eldest had a cough but she's sending the others to school and nursery today and neither her or her husband were going to self isolate and the husband was definitely in a job where he'd get full pay for the normal amount of time as she said what he did. Oh and th enough definitely wasn't covid HmmConfused

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 17/03/2020 06:32

Enough = cough!!

MarshaBradyo · 17/03/2020 06:33

They will enforce it and good.

But also send anyone you know who is being dim this

Hello all, I am writing to you from my fourth day in coronavirus quarantine, here in Barcelona, Spain. This is a message to everyone- family, friends, former colleagues, peers and teammates back home (or wherever you are in the world). Please take this virus seriously. I want to share with you what is happening here now, what the consequences are of a delayed response. I hope this will help you to understand that all jokes and toilet paper memes aside, your action needs to be taken now.

A week ago here in Spain, we only talked about coronavirus. We already had some cases, but it just didn’t seem that bad. We saw the suffering in Italy and said “That won’t happen here.” Changes were not made. People still went out on the weekend, went to the gym, went to work, to school, etc. Preventing the spread of the virus was not a priority. Fast forward just 1 WEEK: Spain is now in a state of emergency. The virus is here and it is tearing through this country. I have coronavirus. My friends have coronavirus. Parents of children have coronavirus. Teachers, students, business people, researchers, politicians, bus drivers, etc. have coronavirus. In a matter of days, the number of confirmed cases spiked from just a few hundred to well into the thousands. Hospitals and medical clinics are completely and entirely exhausted, operating at over-capacity, with quickly depleting resources and staff. Hundreds of doctors, nurses and other medical personnel have caught the virus and have been issued to quarantine. Those who remain are working 24/7, non stop. It is not just the elderly or the immunocompromised who are checking in for treatment- people of ALL ages are needing medical care. With each passing day, the death toll rises and the situation grows more severe.

In just 1 WEEK the coronavirus has caused Spain to crumble and it appears the worst has yet to come. Now having one of the fastest rates of COVID-19 contagion in the entire world, the Spanish Prime Minister stated that the number of cases could top 10,000 by early next week- almost double the current level. Just yesterday, cases rose by 1,500. If the pressure on the health care system is already unbearable, then what could possibly happen in the following days? We could ask our dear friends in Italy, as they are about a week ahead of us, with thousands of infected people trying to get into hospitals with only a few spaces left. With doctors and nurses having to CHOOSE who to save and who to let die because there are not enough medical professionals, supplies or space left to treat the growing number of patients. The Spanish government can see we are following in Italy’s footsteps and the pressure is on, to make up for a lack of action taken in the beginning.

All schools and universities have shut down. Public events and sports games have been cancelled. Roads have been blocked, entire regions of the country are under lockdown and towns and villages have been quarantined. Businesses, cafes, restaurants, gyms, bars/cubs and shopping centres have all closed, with the exception of the supermarkets selling food and pharmacies. Police roam the streets to ensure people stay inside. The rest of the world can see the risk now too- 62 countries have suspended flights from Spain.

To think, if preventative action could have been taken just 1 week before, if the mindsets of people could have shifted 1 week earlier, we could be living a very different reality right now.

To all the people back home in Canada or wherever you may be, please understand that this virus will change things very quickly. Once it becomes an issue, it is very hard to control. Being proactive and taking precautions now is absolutely necessary; every day counts! Be diligent with your health practices and be responsible with your decision making to be out in public!!! Going to the bar, the mall, the movies, the gym, etc. is truly just not worth it right now!!! Save it for a week that isn’t potentially life threatening to you or the humans around you. Push for work weeks at home and online classes!! Nothing is worth the risk. Social distancing is CRITICAL. And if you are sitting there feeling like you don’t have to be cautious because you are young/healthy, PLEASE remember that we as human beings have a responsibility to look out for one another. You being careless could lead to the loss of someone’s grandmother or grandfather, someone's parent, someone’s coworker, or someone’s friend. That is what is happening here and it’s a lot more difficult to stop now that it’s started.

I hope you take something away from this going forward. Stay home and be cautious. Start today if you haven’t already. You will make a difference!!! Please stay safe everyone.

ilovecakeandwine · 17/03/2020 06:38

I'm not sure how you can not know , even if you are not on social media it's on the news , radio, newspapers.
I thought the same at work yesterday just carry on but I think from today that will change .
The shit has got real now and the government advice is to avoid social contact .

Mintlegs · 17/03/2020 06:41

Many thanks for your information Marshabradyo. I fear the NHS in the UK was on its knees before the Coronavirus came. I am so worried about the future. I hope you and loved ones are ok

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 17/03/2020 06:49

I think that's the thing though alot of people don't listen to the radio as they have Spotify or they only stream TV. Social media often switches the timelines to show what you are interested in so if you don't really look at the news it will come up with less of it. Idk what the answer is but I also think that there is so much scaremongering and false news that alot of people have just switched off.

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 17/03/2020 06:50

I work with very vulnerable children so I have been told I have to stay off but I'm sure other sorts of companies are less strict and like others I am worrying about paying the bills.

MarshaBradyo · 17/03/2020 06:51

I just pasted that - From Spain. But it worked on my reluctant Dh so I’m sharing it around. I think we should all share it to our friends and relatives who are stubborn and do not get it.

meredithgrey1 · 17/03/2020 07:02

Agree with PPs, a lot of people will ignore this as long as they can.
My friend said yesterday he was surrounded at work by people coughing, I asked why they were still there and he said that they're contractors and if they don't work they don't get paid. Given the industry, and what my friend said, some of these people are extremely well paid contractors and if they're not doing it how can you expect people who literally live hand to mouth to do it? I know they should but if you have a very real fear that you can't feed your kids if you have time off, that's going to trump a more abstract fear about coronavirus getting worse.
I'm wfh at the moment and count myself lucky to be able to do so, I'm glad I don't have to make a decision between buying food and self isolating.

klaraday · 17/03/2020 07:06

I agree its going to be difficult as so many are in denial about the situation or think its all over hyped. Especially older people I'm finding so many are carrying on as usual, wanting to go out or meet up.

TwittleBee · 17/03/2020 07:08

We arent in the financial place for DH to take any time off work beyond a couple of days and it really worries me. I know a lot of my friends are the same. We have barely any savings, just enough to cover a few days off by DH, our savings got wiped last year when we used them to stay with our son in NICU.

Thankfully I am able to work from home but currently I'm on sick in hospital due to threatened pre term labour. I'm using Annual Leave to cover it but DH doesnt have that option with shift work.

If we have to self isolate, I see us losing our home

Bagelsandbrie · 17/03/2020 07:15

No one is going to pay any attention to it all unless they impose fines and police action and they start paying people full wages to stay home. Sad but true.

middleager · 17/03/2020 07:20

Hope they enforce it soon. On the gym thread on here people are still insisting on going.

We can't even be trusted to keep away. I know so many IRL who think it's a joke t's depressing.
Employers forcing us in too, schools open.

Just get lockdown announced.

bumblingbovine49 · 17/03/2020 07:28

Please try not to worry about this. The .mortgage companies are offering payment holidays and to be honest , their staff are going to be just as affected. I can't see people being thrown out of their houses while this is going on. Concentrate on getting through this period. If you can't pay your mortgage, you can't. Deal with that when this over . Take care of yourselves, emotionally and physically

Xxx

meredithgrey1 · 17/03/2020 07:44

If the government want people to self isolate they need to say something to that effect then. The french government has enforced a lockdown with fines but they've also suspended taxes, rent, water, gas and electric bills. I believe Western Australia has done something similar but not quite as extreme (think it might just be bills they've stopped).

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 17/03/2020 07:55

What about those of us who rent? I'm sure landlords won't be happy with no income. I'm lucky as I'm in a housing association flat but many of others aren't.

I work in healthcare. My boss yesterday said we had to call 111 if we had any symptoms 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️

TwittleBee · 17/03/2020 08:00

I asked for a mortgage holiday when our son was in NICU and Halifax said we dont qualify for one as we dont earn enough (we wouldnt pay our mortgage back in the term they said) so I don't have any confidence in that this time either. Although we will be phoning to ask.
