Haircut!

12 weeks (or thereabouts) without a haircut?!

What blinding realisations are popping into your head?

A lot of hairdressers are self-employed, and always very clean, we wash our hands every half an hour (shampooing) and our tools are sterilised regularly. Probably one of the safest places to visit.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 17/03/2020 06:43

The thing that is so contradictory to me is this:

If social distancing is key, and we should not go to the hairdresser (fair enough) then why am I (and my family) still expected to go to school/college where we mix with up to 1500 people?

That is the bit I don’t get

If risk of infection, even in small groups ;eg hairdressers) is so great ;am not arguing that), then why are my DH and kids still expected to share facilities with over a thousand others at school (using school bus, eating at school, etc etc)

dudsville · 17/03/2020 06:47

I find myself really craving things now like tuna arms a shop bought cappuccino. I go months without these things, but take them away and suddenly I'm "ah, remember how delicious those were...".

DoubleAction · 17/03/2020 06:56

I have a dentist appointment on Friday. Only routine so I guess that shouldn't happen either or maybe it should to ensure I don't need the NHS for anything serious during the duration?

Is that his livelihood gone too?

Unless you are planning on licking your hairdresser it will be fine.

Horehound · 17/03/2020 07:03

@Igotthemheavyboobs a tually you could just make it! It's a lot easier than what you might think.
Think Jamie Oliver has an easy recipe. It's also tastier too!

Frouby · 17/03/2020 07:04

I'm not planning on seeing anyone except family for weeks. Can live without a cut but going to break all my self imposed rules about home colouring and buy a box dye to cover my roots up. It doesn't matter to anyone else but it matters to me.

Not worth the risk, my kids are off school now until after easter. Ds has a cough so self isolating. And even if he didn't I would say he has.

Abracad · 17/03/2020 07:05

“I want my hair to look pretty, so the rules don’t apply to me.”

Excellent.

This kind of crap IS going to heighten the spread, which the modelling clearly shows will lead to increased mortality. So sure, prioritise your haircut (while pretending it’s about your hairdresser’s livelihood) but you can NEVER complain about the spread or impact of the virus on your family or loved ones because whether you care to admit it or not, YOU and people like you are making this worse.

DoubleAction · 17/03/2020 07:05

I dont think it will Barryisland. As it happens I had my haircut last week so I'm ok for a while. This week the social distancing is "advised". Give it another week or two and it will be compulsory, especially as so many people don't seem to grasp what it means .

I do agree that it will be very difficult to ask people to do it while schools are open. I also understand why schools are open. Very difficult times, glad I'm not in charge!

If it is a rule then he needs to make it one - close these places, let the owners get some sort of compensation. Why hasn't he?

20Newnames · 17/03/2020 12:58

I was in the (small independent) hairdresser this morning and she had five cancellation calls by the time I left at 11am. She is panicking for sure.

Smallnmighty · 17/03/2020 13:02

Sadly we are all going to have to get used to the idea of 'life' versus 'livelihood'. And filing our own nails, dying our own hair, walking our own dog, looking after our own children, cleaning our own house, cooking our own food, drinking our own (shit) instant coffee, enjoying our own company...

I feel divorce lawyers may be the only career that does well from this 🤪

Justmuddlingalong · 17/03/2020 13:46

The wee hairdresser's round the corner from me has closed for the foreseeable future. Most of her customers are elderly ladies. I'm glad she's taken that decision and hope that her business survives.

Frouby · 17/03/2020 18:46

Ive shaved ds hair today. He's fuming (he's 6 but always had trendy cuts) but my theory is do it now then in 8/10/12 weeks he can have a trendy cut on what has grown back without looking like worzel gummidge in the meantime.

serialtester · 17/03/2020 19:11

If people can't wfh work is compulsory. School (currently) is compulsory. Buying food is essential.

Yesterday we were told that in order to manage this situation unnecessary contact has to stop.

Gym - unnecessary
Hairdressers - unnecessary
Play dates/coffee with friends - unnecessary

How fucking difficult is that to understand?

Aspoonfullofjam · 17/03/2020 19:26

Thanks @serialtester finally someone who gets it.

Inextremis · 17/03/2020 19:33

If you're worried about your hairdresser's livelihood, but also concerned about spreading the virus, why not just send her the money you would have paid, and stay home?

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 17/03/2020 21:11

Inextremis, are you left wing by any chance? Always generous with other people’s money....

DIYBother · 17/03/2020 21:14

Good to know that it doesn’t matter what decision you make or how carefully you have made it, some bitch on mumsnet will always be along to give you a dressing down!

The number of people having the absolute time of their lives because coronavirus has given them the opportunity to tell off lots of people and assert their moral superiority is unreal.

I'm glad it's not just me that thinks this. I've always found that some posters on MN think they are so much better and more intelligent than the rest of us but they are really out in force at the moment.

It’s even more contagious than the virus these days!

salty78 · 17/03/2020 21:46

I thought hairdressers were ok to stay open because it's an essential service for some people who are physically unable to wash their own hair.

My dentist is still open as usual tomorrow as well.

SamSeabornforPresident · 17/03/2020 22:28

It's really not nice. There was a woman on a thread the other day who was apoplectic with rage because a woman in Italy (who is currently under lockdown) ordered some paper from amazon. It's unbelievable.

Flythedragons · 18/03/2020 11:17

Have cancelled my appointment 😕. Haven’t been able to go for ages due to two surgeries, was so looking forward to it. But it’s not essential, I have to consider my elderly relatives who are relying on me at the moment.

TheVirus · 18/03/2020 11:19

I did mine myself with DH hair clippers the other day, its a short spiky looking pixie cut, did a good job, if I say so myself!
