what changes will you be making post corona

This time next year, when a vaccine has been produced and we have emerged post corona with hopefully minimal damage....will you make any changes as a result?

Personally I've already decided to aim for the following:

  1. bulk up savings (putting this in bold because I know people will pick on it) I KNOW THAT AS MUCH AS THEY MIGHT WANT TO THIS IS JUST NOT POSSIBLE FOR SOME PEOPLE - there are so many people worried about the effect this will have on them financially. Stats say that at nearly a third of people in the UK don't have enough savings to last more than a month - yet more than 60% of the population went on at least one holiday abroad last year. I'm willing to bet that there is some overlap and some AGAIN NOT ALL of us, including me, could actually save a lot more if we didn't prioritise what we think are necessities (phones, holidays, clothes). I'm guilty of thinking just because I've got a well paid job, and have managed to buy a house quite young, I'm doing okay if I'm not spending more than I'm earning - starting to realise now how head-in-the-sand that is. Chances of having a holiday abroad this year look unlikely now, so that money is going straight into savings, I also plan to go pay as you go (or rolling SIM) when my contract ends next month, for as long as my current phone keeps going, so hopefully will save a good £20-30 p/m there. Few more ideas for saving money which, honestly, I should have been doing anyway, but better late than never!

  2. keep shelves full a bit more. I never let them go to empty, but have lots of different supermarkets near me that I can just 'pop in' on the way home, so rarely do big shops and have really full cupboards. Going to make sure going forward that I always have at least a few spare loo rolls, one long life milk, a few other essentials - basically enough for a fortnight.

  3. be thankful for friends, family and my health

  4. remember which companies are slightly less likely to f* you over than others - I had flights booked with two airlines (to the same place, one there and one return). One has cancelled the flight and offered a full refund - the other has only offered a free change of details to another flight, except if you try to rebook it only offers you more expensive flights so you have to pay the difference....

  5. hope workplaces realise that WFH is achievable and staff can be trusted. I didn't realise until now how many of my colleagues are immuno-compromised to some degree, or have caring responsibilities. In the future I'm not going to feel guilty about asking to WFH, or even calling in sick when I have a bad cold or something else infectious - it's actually less selfish than coming in and infecting others who might react worse than me

So nothing earth-shattering but some things to plan (and hope) for to distract from stressing

Keep my veggie bed more rigorously.
Stop putting work before my family, health and me all the time.
Exercise more.
Go to the sea every week - I'm ten minutes walk away and still manage to let weeks go by without getting there.

  1. Get rid of my credit card
  2. Save more
  3. Stop wasting money on entertainment, unused gym memberships and clothes I'll never wear
  4. Work hard to get the skills for a much needed job (never be unemployable)
  5. Look after my health. Stop eating so much crap and exercise

When this is all over I want to be able to live my life fully instead of hiding away

Me too. I've turned in to a hermit over the last few years because I cant keep up with the Jonsies

I have just been thinking about this and actually I don’t think I’d spend less money/buy less, I’d just spend more wisely. Support small, local businesses, buy quality, sustainable goods, and spend money on experiences rather than things. DH and I used to love going out for food/drinks but with three under three it’s just stopped happening. I’m going to change that (if we get chance).
I don’t want shit loads of savings, I want to help keep the economy going in a sustainable way.

Buy less
Buy local
Be more self sufficient. I have a vegetable garden but don't put enough effort into it.
Less TV
More outdoors
More talking.

Being more hygienic with regards to hand cleaning and surface cleaning in the home

  • I’ll be grateful for the small things in life that I took for granted; meeting up with friends or going to places spontaneously without having to think about whether it was essential.
  • will continue to cut back massively on waste. We now really think about how much we need before cooking, etc or work out how ingredients can be adapted for two family meals - whereas even a few weeks ago we were more cavalier with ‘cheap ingredients’ like pasta.
  • really appreciating those that put themselves on the line to keep us safe.
  • a newly discovered love of baking and prepping food for the freezer. Our food bill for prepared items has gone down significantly and will remain so.
  • this experience will remind me not to put off till tomorrow what I can so today whether that’s going to places I’ve always wanted, visiting friends I haven’t seen for ages or people who make life special that they are loved and appreciated (this is more likely to be my lovely family than the person scanning my groceries but I suspect for a while I’ll be saying it a lot).
  • goodbye to impulse buying. New clothes and makup don’t seem very important at the moment. Will be saving the money I’d normally have spent on stuff.
  • There have been lots of acts of kindness from local people. I really hope that continues over these testing times and it’s been a reminder that we are a community. The importance of simple acts of kindness or thoughtfulness will stay with me when some sense of normal returns to our lives.

Quality time with family and friends. DH and I haven't been doing much since Christmas, largely due to the weather (although that's a bit of an excuse) so we need to get back into good habits of spending time in nature, walking, just spending proper time together.

Improve social connections - I'm pretty lazy about maintaining friendships, need to put more work in.

Lose some weight and exercise more - in fact I'm starting now, then maybe at least some good will come out of this period of isolation.

Spend less time on the internet - such a time sink.

Be more mindful of spending money buying stuff.

I also really hope that some bigger good can come out of it:
A proper good look at the NHS so it is properly funded and the people who work in it are appreciated and properly remunerated.

Individuals taking more responsibility for their own health and wellbeing.

Work practices being looked into - zero hours contracts and the gig economy being scrutinised and everything possible done to ensure people are paid properly and have good working conditions, and the safety net of sick pay etc.

Social media - there has been so much rubbish spouted online about Covid-19. No suggesting free speech should be shut down but the social media platforms need to be held more accountable. People need to be kinder to each other online.

The hope that the US sees that healthcare should not just be for the wealthy.

Maybe the ' more privileged' parts of the world will have more empathy for those people suffering so much in war.zones and poorer countries all over the world and the ' anti- foreigner' , ' keep them out' views will be less prevalent

This is a change that I hope is made.

what changes will you be making post corona
Reginabambina · 17/03/2020 09:04

I hope that I won’t see any changes in my life at all.

onceandneveragain · 17/03/2020 09:47

@crustycrab....at any point did I say they were in priority order? They were just random things I was thinking of as I went along. I wasn't even going to include it, because I'm always appreciative of my family, health and the thread was more about changes I wanted to make....

Maybe some people's changes could be "be less unnecessarily narky/aggressive from behind their keyboards?" Although then aibu would probably be a ghost town Smile

Thanks everybody, some really good ideas which i will be borrowing and also Flowers for those who are struggling now or think they will be in the future

onceandneveragain · 17/03/2020 09:48

Sorry name change fail....I'm the op....for some reason still uses the same name on the app!

Vinylsamso · 17/03/2020 10:35

Start getting out and about more like I used to.

Stop wasting money on stuff I don’t need.

Appreciate how lucky I am.
