what changes will you be making post corona

newyearnoeu · 16/03/2020 22:14

This time next year, when a vaccine has been produced and we have emerged post corona with hopefully minimal damage....will you make any changes as a result?

Personally I've already decided to aim for the following:

  1. bulk up savings (putting this in bold because I know people will pick on it) I KNOW THAT AS MUCH AS THEY MIGHT WANT TO THIS IS JUST NOT POSSIBLE FOR SOME PEOPLE - there are so many people worried about the effect this will have on them financially. Stats say that at nearly a third of people in the UK don't have enough savings to last more than a month - yet more than 60% of the population went on at least one holiday abroad last year. I'm willing to bet that there is some overlap and some AGAIN NOT ALL of us, including me, could actually save a lot more if we didn't prioritise what we think are necessities (phones, holidays, clothes). I'm guilty of thinking just because I've got a well paid job, and have managed to buy a house quite young, I'm doing okay if I'm not spending more than I'm earning - starting to realise now how head-in-the-sand that is. Chances of having a holiday abroad this year look unlikely now, so that money is going straight into savings, I also plan to go pay as you go (or rolling SIM) when my contract ends next month, for as long as my current phone keeps going, so hopefully will save a good £20-30 p/m there. Few more ideas for saving money which, honestly, I should have been doing anyway, but better late than never!

  2. keep shelves full a bit more. I never let them go to empty, but have lots of different supermarkets near me that I can just 'pop in' on the way home, so rarely do big shops and have really full cupboards. Going to make sure going forward that I always have at least a few spare loo rolls, one long life milk, a few other essentials - basically enough for a fortnight.

  3. be thankful for friends, family and my health

  4. remember which companies are slightly less likely to f* you over than others - I had flights booked with two airlines (to the same place, one there and one return). One has cancelled the flight and offered a full refund - the other has only offered a free change of details to another flight, except if you try to rebook it only offers you more expensive flights so you have to pay the difference....

  5. hope workplaces realise that WFH is achievable and staff can be trusted. I didn't realise until now how many of my colleagues are immuno-compromised to some degree, or have caring responsibilities. In the future I'm not going to feel guilty about asking to WFH, or even calling in sick when I have a bad cold or something else infectious - it's actually less selfish than coming in and infecting others who might react worse than me

So nothing earth-shattering but some things to plan (and hope) for to distract from stressing

Keep my cupboards a bit fuller as I’ve realised we don’t keep enough in for events like this.

Shopping more locally from smaller businesses, I’m seeing a lot of community spirit from them so far and am scared that they might not withstand this.

Have some savings. I am grateful that we are both in very stable jobs that should be unaffected by this but we have zero savings.

PlanDeRaccordement · 16/03/2020 22:17

I admire your list of changes. Nice to see a positive post too.
I don’t have anything to add. But will think on things and maybe post back again tomorrow.

lljkk · 16/03/2020 22:26

I'll be relieved when it's over. When's that going to be, September 2021?

motortroll · 16/03/2020 22:30

I'm with you on the savings. Our business is decimated. I'm having to go back to teaching full time. And I might not even get that at this point!

Ventilatorshortage · 16/03/2020 22:33

With proper financial security not wait to do things....

Id never put dream holidays on credit, but I wouldn't put things off

MrsMGE · 16/03/2020 22:37

Keep washing my hands a lot more than I used to (although I was pretty good anyway). Give myself brownie points for being good and keeping my workplace tidy by wiping the surfaces regularly. And I've always been one to carry hand sanitiser in my handbag.

People used to laugh. Turns out these are all good habits.

sittingonacornflake · 16/03/2020 22:37

I'm going to wash my hands more!

I thought I washed my hands well before but I didn't. Rarely for long enough and the idea of washing them when you get home never occurred to me.

I also want to work much harder on not touching my bloody face or chewing my nails. Ahhh.

Also going to start having contingency plans in place a bit more. I'm a single parent and need to make sure grandparents are on board with helping in different scenarios.

Might also be worth thinking about planning for other things that could happen in the future like loss of Wi-fi, loss of power, loss of water that type of thing and just have a few days back up of things that could help - candles, batteries, bottled water, battery charger that kind of thing.

I think I'm also going to have to bite the bullet and learn how to grow food.

sittingonacornflake · 16/03/2020 22:38

It felt a bit therapeutic writing all that down.

Beebityboo · 16/03/2020 22:38

Never take my mum for granted ever again.

Beebityboo · 16/03/2020 22:39

And I'm moving back to Canada

Binterested · 16/03/2020 22:43

Good idea for a thread.

Wash hands more. I wasn’t doing it properly before and I know I wasn’t because my skin is now buggered after just two weeks

Appreciate my family.

Be a bit more in tune with the rest of the world - not just my circle. I feel so sorry for us all right now. What a horrible time we are having. How awful and scary this is for the whole of humanity. Hope I can keep hold of that sense of US.

Growingboys · 16/03/2020 22:49

I hope my company will realise loads of us can work from home and it will be cheaper too.

Then I will get a puppy.

middleager · 16/03/2020 22:50

Beebity Flowers
I feel the same with my parents

I won't put work first. I don't often socialise as work spills into weekend. I've lost touch with lots of friends, although I am now in touch on the back of this.

Be more neighbourly and civic minded. Volunteer.

Build up savings, which I had just used as this crisis hit

Re-evaluate my marriage. My husband seems to be lacking in compassion, which I knew, but have hidden away from. It raises its head now.

Book a holiday. Not been abroad for years as I'm scared of flying. After this? Sod that!
I was hoping to try for that this year.

Exercise and get healthy.

Address my anxiety.

Look for a new job - my boss has shown his true colours in this and I don't like what i've seen.

mrshoho · 16/03/2020 22:51

Appreciate the very privileged life we have. Our lives are being temporarily put into uncertainty re health and finances. So many in the world live in this state permanently such as refugees fleeing wars, famines and health.

Campaign harder for our NHS. We need to make it the top priority and not accept funding cuts.

mummabubs · 16/03/2020 22:56

Much the same as @sittingonacornflake. Definitely want to wash hands more frequently (even though as an NHS employee I'd like to think I'm pretty hot on this) but like most people I'm also noticing just how often I subconsciously touch my face! My DH and I have let our relationship slip off our list of priorities since our toddler came into our lives 2 years ago, so in the event of quarantine coming into effect we'd like to see it as an opportunity to prioritise our marriage and relationship. I've also tentatively planted some herbs at home today, so we'll be screwed for toilet roll, eggs and bread... But at least we'll have basil and coriander. 😂

Justmuddlingalong · 16/03/2020 23:02

Stop buying stuff. Clothing, shoes, bags and purses. Feeling a bit stupid at the money I normally spend on things I want but don't need. Looking around at all the stuff I acquire blindly makes me feel a bit, "what the fuck is the point of all this?"

TinyGringotts · 16/03/2020 23:04

I'm already realising that I can get a lot better at not wasting food. I find myself very conscious of making sure I use everything I have and don't waste it as we just don't know what the next few weeks hold. It's strangely satisfying.

Keep washing my hands with the vigour I currently am.

I'll probably keep some pasta, tins and long life milk stashed away somewhere for any future crisis. But I categorically will not do this till this is over.

Donate more regularly to my local food bank. I already support them but this crisis highlights how terrifyingly close to the edge so many people are.

MrsMGE · 16/03/2020 23:08

I also won't be afraid to speak out against horrible people criticising refugees and immigrants. The reality is most of those barking loud are clueless and ungrateful and situations like this one show what really matters - community and looking after each other.

RAOK · 16/03/2020 23:09

Be thankful for my health and prioritise a lifestyle that is conducive to maintaining it.

Think of others and how I can help them especially elderly and vulnerable people.

Arrange social events with the neighbours I have finally got to know after 12 years of living here.

DannyNedelko · 16/03/2020 23:14

Spend more quality time in pubs, bars and restaurants and concert venues.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 16/03/2020 23:15
  1. Savings
  2. This isn’t a personal one, but I hope the NHS is funded properly after this.
  3. Also that sick pay is sorted out for everyone, and presenteeism stops and workers are protected more in general.
  4. Also stop buying so much stuff.
Matildathehun77 · 16/03/2020 23:18

I'm going to lose weight in a serious way. I suspect I'll fall into the high risk category because of my Asthma which is affected by my high weight. So essentially being high risk is my own fault.

Wehttam · 16/03/2020 23:29

Move to the seaside, life’s too short to be in a city. Fuck it, I’d rather be poor by the sea than pseudo rich in the city.

Justmuddlingalong · 16/03/2020 23:33

Nearly 40 years ago I moved cross country from the city to a wee town on the coast. I hope you make that change, Wehttam. I would thoroughly recommend it. 🐚

beebyjeeby · 16/03/2020 23:34

Wash my heads more & be more healthy in general.

Big yes to saving more although we will likely need to pay more taxes in the future & our service economy requires people to spend.

Move to the seaside One day 🤞
