Would you go to hairdressers? Or DH to barbers?

We have a small barbershop, family business, just hubby and 5 barbers. Hubby wants to try and stay open, some of the team want to isolate. None of us/the team are sick yet. But you can’t maintain a social distance when you’re providing a personal service like hair cutting.

Will you keep going to hairdressers or barbers now we are all told to keep a social distance and avoid pubs etc?

We are terrified now what this means for our business and income. We will probably be ruined 😢
Thank you.

All of the hairdressers etc closed in Ireland as of this weekend!!

C3line · 16/03/2020 20:26

Think I missed the outright haircut ban🙄. We’ll have to wait for a bit more clarification ie a list. Music lessons, swimming, car MOTs.....

MrsSnitchnose · 16/03/2020 20:27

As long as mine is still open when the Easter holidays arrive, I will be going for my usual cut and highlight job.

Jazzycat84 · 16/03/2020 20:28

Will the barbers be paid if you close? Being a small business have you discussed the reality of closing with them. There is no telling how long this is going to go on for we aren’t even at the peak yet. I think a lot of people are say to isolate but this is going to have huge implications for people and business. This is not to say I don’t care about the people who will die from this but I also care about the millions who won’t be able to afford food or pay bills.

inforapennyinforapug · 16/03/2020 20:30

The advice is really clear-essential contact only. That means supporting those less able, food and medicine shopping. End of.

generalh · 16/03/2020 20:30

The govt said they advise us not ban us. I am a teacher and am unable to stop socialising. My beautician has said she is open as usual. I get paid when my school closes but she wont when her business has to shut. If she says no and cancels then that will be a reason to.

C3line · 16/03/2020 20:31

No it wasn’t that clear at all.

slartibarti · 16/03/2020 20:31

No. Having a shampoo, cut and blow dry involves at least an hour of close contact with someone who's had close contact with numerous other clients.

generalh · 16/03/2020 20:31

Won`t sorry...missed the pesky apostrophe there.

NanSlayer · 16/03/2020 20:32

Nope

MrsSnitchnose · 16/03/2020 20:32

Might be also worth enquiring with your regular clients if they's be open to mobile work if you're able to provide that? People may be more comfortable with dealing with one person rather than sitting in the salon with other customers

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 20:32

No, sorry.

I had to cancel mine anyway as I am out of work due to the virus.

prettycolours · 16/03/2020 20:35

I've been wondering about this as my hair desperately needs a cut and I keep putting it off. I feel like I should maybe get it done this week before things get really bad.

Wildthyme · 16/03/2020 20:38

Hairdressers are still open in Spain. They're classed as an essential hygiene service.

MinesaPinot · 16/03/2020 20:38

I went at the weep. My hairdresser said she would be open for as long as she can.

MinesaPinot · 16/03/2020 20:39

Weep? I meant weekend!

TooDamnSarky · 16/03/2020 20:44

Of course not.

ash0811 · 16/03/2020 20:44

The problem with Boris’ announcement is that no one agrees on what is essential - I’ll only be going out for walks or food shopping. A hair appointment to me isn’t essential, but I know people still going for make overs etc as they think that is essential so I guess we just have to trust that people wouldn’t go if they felt ill.

hookiwooki · 16/03/2020 20:46

We're support for so many people that we need to minimise all contact with anyone else.

Also mindful that we may lose our income so if we can live without it we must.

SilverPepperOfTheStars · 16/03/2020 20:47

Yes, I'm going tomorrow. My hairdresser of 15 plus years has recently opened her own salon, and I will be supporting her for as long as I can.

I've just been highly criticised for choosing to still take my mum out on Mother's Day for lunch, but until these establishments are forced to shut, I'll be supporting them.

This shows the purpose of social distancing.

I don't understand why Brits aren't looking at the rest of the world and changing their behavior.

quicknamechange80 · 16/03/2020 20:54

No absolutely not. The guidelines are clear and I'm high risk.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/03/2020 20:54

I would. I'm panicking that my hairdressers will be closed and I'll have to go grey! I've bought a box dye in case of emergencies though - no idea if it's the right colour but it won't look any worse than grey roots!

C3line · 16/03/2020 20:56

They’re really not clear.

TheWordmeister · 16/03/2020 21:00

I am later this week.

My hairdresser rents her space so sees one client at a time. Not high risk and nor is she.
