Would you go to hairdressers? Or DH to barbers?

We have a small barbershop, family business, just hubby and 5 barbers. Hubby wants to try and stay open, some of the team want to isolate. None of us/the team are sick yet. But you can’t maintain a social distance when you’re providing a personal service like hair cutting.

Will you keep going to hairdressers or barbers now we are all told to keep a social distance and avoid pubs etc?

We are terrified now what this means for our business and income. We will probably be ruined 😢
Thank you.

I’m sorry but no, it’s not essential

wehaveafloater · 16/03/2020 19:57

I'd encourage lots of hand washing and have boxes of tissues to hand and bins - but in essence I'd probably stay open if I had no underlying heath issues.

MauriceandAlec · 16/03/2020 19:57

Yes, I'd go.

glasshalfsomething · 16/03/2020 19:58

Yes, if there were high levels of hygiene, anyone suspected was turned away and I was confident I wasn’t showing symptoms.

Small businesses need to collect cash ASAP to see them through lean times.

Livy178 · 16/03/2020 19:58

I have an appointment this week and I’m going

Toddlerteaplease · 16/03/2020 19:59

Yes. As a PP said. Small business need support.

Koffeeinmycup · 16/03/2020 20:00

Honestly I would if I was showing no symptoms and it was my usual hairdressers S I know how clean they are. I worry about all the small businesses and how they are going to manage x

Roussette · 16/03/2020 20:00

Yes.

I have appointments for.... hairdressers, dentist, a pedicure and a facial. I plan to go to them all

WobblyAllOver · 16/03/2020 20:01

I went to the hairdressers at the weekend so at this moment in time yes I would still go.

Iloveplacentas · 16/03/2020 20:01

I will. My hairdresser is small, just her working in it. At most it will just be her, I and maybe 1 other client. I think that’s ok. I wouldn’t go to a big salon with lots of people

Slowpokeslimmer · 16/03/2020 20:04

Yes, I will as I am concerned that my hairdressser will lose her business. I will continue to attend monthly for as long as she is able to keep open.

PawPatrolMakesMeDrink · 16/03/2020 20:05

No.

RedRed9 · 16/03/2020 20:05

I’d keep appointment numbers really low so you can effectively clean between clients. And so there aren’t lots of people in the room at once.

I would say the client is more at risk: the hairdresser mostly stands behind the client - and therefore breathes all over them. The client mostly breathes towards the mirror.

RedRed9 · 16/03/2020 20:06

@Roussette you’re an idiot to keep your facial appointment. That is literally someone breathing on your face for 20-40mins!

It’s completely non essential! Can’t you just wait?

TwelveIslands · 16/03/2020 20:07

I think that unless the government says "Mrs Brown at Number 47 Acacia Avenue, Anytown, you mustn't go to your hairdressers" then many people will just continue with these "essential" interactions!

No wonder other countries have to go into lockdown. Which we will in a week or two.

RaininSummer · 16/03/2020 20:09

No. It isn't essential . I will chop my own a bit if it goes on too long.

mollypuss1 · 16/03/2020 20:09

The amount of people saying yes if the reason Boris’ plan isn’t gonna work.

generalh · 16/03/2020 20:11

Booked for the weekend and the beautician on Wednesday. No reason not to yet. Will see what they say nearer the time.

ArkAtEee · 16/03/2020 20:13

I did, last weekend. To my friends small salon on the side of her house which only does 2 people at a time. But she sent out messages ahead of the appointment stating the hygiene measures she was taking (and I saw her doing them while there!).

TwelveIslands · 16/03/2020 20:14

No reason not to yet.

This is utterly mindboggling.

RedRed9 · 16/03/2020 20:16

No reason not to yet.
^ our of interest @generalh what do you consider a ‘reason’ to be?

UntamedWisteria · 16/03/2020 20:21

no reason not to yet

So the government telling you not to isn't a good enough reason?

moneysavingmama · 16/03/2020 20:23

Nope. I'm looking for home dye boxes online atm!

bakingcupcakes · 16/03/2020 20:23

I'd remain open and see what the customers do. I'd also make a big show of cleaning everything in front of people. Spraying and wiping chairs etc every time they're sat on, card machine every time it's used, hand washing etc. That's what my work is doing although we aren't hairdressers. I've never spent so much time cleaning! We're still getting customers in. I'll be interested so see if there's less of them tomorrow.

LimpidPools · 16/03/2020 20:25

Germany has just announced a shutdown for many shops and services.

Essential services such as supermarkets, pharmacies etc will remain open. To my amazement, hairdressers/barbers are included on this list.
