Isolation - 7 or 14 days?

My DD had a fever yesterday, only lasted 12 hours. We were isolating her as per the advice at the time which was to keep her at home for 7 days. Now that advice has changed to isolate everyone in the house for 14 days. Does this include us? Or not as she has no fever today?

FreakForHummous I’m in the same boat - DD was self isolating, due back school on Wednesday, but now it seems we ALL have to self isolate for 14 days, but I’m not sure if DD can go back to school when her 14 days are up!!

mbhgfcbyyrrx · 16/03/2020 19:21

And what if say, 4 people are in your household and the 4th person gets symptoms on the 12th day... do they have to isolate for 7 days from the 12th day or free to go about their business on 15th day!?

twinnywinny14 · 17/03/2020 05:46

7 days for the person who is ill and 14days for the rest of the family

I just need to check I’m not over reacting...we’ve had my DD is isolated since Thursday. This means we all now need to isolate until a week on Thursday doesn’t it?

twinnywinny14 · 17/03/2020 06:54

@Didyeaye DD needs to isolate until Thursday and the rest of you until a week on Thursday. Obv depending on DDs age she may have to be at home until a week on thurs if she’s not old enough to go out alone

Didyeaye · 17/03/2020 06:57

Thanks that’s what I thought. She’s 3. Might send her out to nursery 🤣 (joking).

HeronLanyon · 17/03/2020 07:05

7 is living alone
14 for whole household is multiple occupants.
Then on sky or bbc a virologist (sorry can’t remember who this was ) said it needed to be (in multiple household) 14 days from latest symptoms arising. As he said they clock starts again. This makes complete sense.
So i think safest anyway to -
A has symptoms - whole household 14 days. If no one else then that’s it.
A has symptoms and in day 10 B has symptoms 14 days from day 10 - so 24 in total.

That is the only way it makes sense. But as so much else it was confused and a total mess. The single = 7 days was messily added in later by Cao.

Repeat - the clock starting again was not said during press conference but imagine B getting symptoms on day 12 and either everyone then going out and about 2 days later or even 7 days later. Well have thousands of infected people wandering around unknowingly passing it around surely.

HeronLanyon · 17/03/2020 07:06

I feel as though I want to walk over to Downing Street with qs on placards or a loud hauler or something because we sure as hell haven’t been told anything clearly or which makes sense.

HeronLanyon · 17/03/2020 07:07

Loud hailer obvs.

SpeckledFrogsLog · 17/03/2020 07:10

I’m also a bit confused as to when my family’s isolation should start from. Yesterday or day one of my self isolation?

I’m also not sure whether it’s safe for me to see elderly relatives after tomorrow or whether I need to wait 14 days?

Didyeaye · 17/03/2020 07:14

@HeronLanyon that’s not what the .gov guidance says

Isolation - 7 or 14 days?
HeronLanyon · 17/03/2020 07:15

I can see it both ways. Personally I would be retrospective and now isolate for 14 from your day one (which at the time was gonna be 7). That’s just personal interpretation and caution. Good luck.

HeronLanyon · 17/03/2020 07:17

didyeaye that’s really helpful and thank you for posting that. I think I am still thinking ‘exactly’ and it’s makes no sense if we agree the reasons for 14 days in the first place ?
Advice noted.

SpeckledFrogsLog · 17/03/2020 07:23

Thanks Heron that was my instinct too.

Didyeaye · 17/03/2020 07:24

HeronLanyon it seems the thinking is not that you have to restart the isolation period repeatedly within 14 days because within that period, if it’s COVID19, you’re going to get it. If not, perhaps it’s not COVID19 or perhaps you’re lucky enough to be immune or asymptomatic.
I am isolating though for the (now) 14 days

pisspants · 17/03/2020 07:28

I am in same situation and wasnt sure what to do but my DD school has said "those currently self isolating need to extend this to 14 days". it's a little disconcerting that the school is clearer than the government but at least its clear from someone!

twinnywinny14 · 17/03/2020 07:52

It’s 7days for the ill person as they are no longer infectious after 7days so can return to normal. The family who are likely to have caught it need an additional 7days in case they come out with it themselves. After 14days they are not likely to have it or be infectious

BovaryX · 17/03/2020 07:55

The advice is that the entire household isolates for fourteen days if one member exhibits symptoms. The rationale for this is other members can be infected without symptoms hence the extra time for the symptoms to manifest

twinnywinny14 · 17/03/2020 15:25

@BovaryX it clearly says the first person to be ill cause return to normal routines after 7days and the rest of the household after 14days

Isolation - 7 or 14 days?
BertieDrapper · 18/03/2020 17:46

just watching BoJo on BBC....he said the whole 7 day thing for the original ill person...but he said 14 days for the rest of the house if they have symptoms?
So does that mean if you have symptoms you have stay in for the 14 days? but if you don't then after the 7 days you go out??

Clutching at straws here so down shout me down, been in isolation for 6 days, so as of tomorrow DD can go out but I'm guessing that we still can't?

also, what is she still has a cough, can she still go out??

minipie · 18/03/2020 19:38

If you have symptoms (cough or fever), you need to self isolate for 7 days from onset of symptoms (day X). So you can go out to work or get food etc from day X+7. Even if you still have a cough - though you may get dirty looks...

Your family who don’t have symptoms need to stay in till day X+14.

If they get symptoms during that 14 days, they need to stay in for 7 days from their symptoms. So eg if they get symptoms at day X+12, they need to stay in till X+19.

mango that graphic is helpful. I still don’t understand in that example how mum and child 1 can merrily be going lit and about on days when child 2 could be asymptotic and dad clearly is asymptotic and then gets it. I don’t understand how they won’t be passing it on through contact. However, at least the graphic clears up the what if not not the why.

BertieDrapper · 20/03/2020 08:59

I feel very sorry for dad in that illustration!
20 days of isolation!!! Arhh

If myDh suddenly gets symptoms on day 13 I will cry.... a lot!
